There are two more below, or there were. A guide and a clerk went through the lower passage before us. They carried a ring of old keys.
The first watcher lowers his gaze toward the iron door. Dust clings to his cloak, and fresh scratches mark his boots from the lower stairs.

He searches beneath the desk, behind the tool chest, and inside a warped cupboard. A loose floorboard gives way, snapping loudly through the lower works.
Beneath it, Kynes finds the foreman’s ledger wrapped in oilcloth. The entries name Pellan, the old weighing room, and a concealed route beneath the western wall.
