A Truce on the Terrace

The lower terrace lies in broken moonlight, safe for the first time in hours. Dust still drifts from the tower above, but the violet flare has thinned to a distant bruise in the dark.

Bren

Bren

We are alive. That counts for something. But this seal you carry, it drew those depths open. Someone made this tower to hide a thing, and I mean to know who.

Bren turns the warm metal seal in her palm, then slips it back toward Kynes with careful fingers. Her gaze flicks to the broken stair and the black fields beyond the tower.

Bren

Bren

There is a quarry road two miles east, and an old cairn there marked with the same sign as this relic. Help me reach it, and I will give you the name of the house that carved these locks, plus this map of the underways.

She taps the inside of her bracer, where a folded map is hidden, then holds Kynes's eye without blinking.

Bren

Bren

The reward is plain. A route beneath the hill, and a chest of tower coin I can take from a dead magistrate's cache. If you want more answers, that cairn is the next door.

A cold wind rolls over the terrace as the tower groans behind them, like it agrees.

A Truce on the Terrace

Kynes draws the strange key from the wreckage and turns it in his palm. The metal answers him like wet wax, then tightens, seams vanishing as arcane shape takes hold.

The key lengthens, edges harden, and a sword settles into being with a clean, bright ring. Dust slips from the blade in a thin silver line.

Kynes

Kynes

The lockwork remembers the blade.

Bren

Bren

That is not a trick I have seen before.

Bren shifts beside him, keeping one eye on the broken tower and one on the new weapon. Her hand stays near her own blade, but she does not step away.

Bren

Bren

If the house carved those locks, then someone wanted that shape to be found. Not broken. Found.

Below the terrace, the falling debris dwindles to a few last sparks of stone in the dark. The quarry road waits beyond the broken arch, open but silent.
