The floor answers with a low groan. A thin seam of black-violet light opens beneath the ledger, and cold air spills up from below.

He takes Bren’s blessed sword, steps straight to Vaelin, and lays the hilt against their brow.
The pulse in the floor stutters. The ledger’s glow gutters red, then slips loose from Vaelin’s chest.
Vaelin’s head tips back as if something unseen is letting go. Red script leaks from the wound in their sleeve, then drains into the shadow at Kynes’s command.

The blessed touch lands clean. Vaelin goes still, and the hungry pressure in the room breaks with it.
For one breath, only the fissure keeps moving, cold air rising from the black seam as the remaining script searches for a new hold.
