The grove stays unnaturally still. Behind Kynes, the vault’s final tremors fade to a distant shudder, and the shimmer of the portal thins like dying heat.

Kynes leans hard against the ancient oak, one hand braced on his staff. His shadow peels loose from his feet, stretching wrong, then gathering into a vaporous shape that drinks the light.

The form does not drift away. It clings close to him, pulsing with the same hungry rhythm the Entity wore in the chamber, as if his outline is being used to hold it together.

Bren’s relief snaps into dread. She steps forward, eyes locked on the wavering shadow, seeing the cost now written across Kynes’s posture, the drain in his stillness.

The Entity is not gone. It is here, and every breath Kynes takes seems to keep it from unraveling.

Drive the Entity off Kynes

Kynes straightens from the oak and drags the darkness with him. His shadow swells, not as a leash, but as a blade of cold pressure aimed at the thing clinging to him.

Void answers void. The hungry shape jerks as Kynes pours his own night into the seam between them, and the grip on his vitality snaps loose.

The Entity recoils in a hiss of vapor and stolen frost, its outline thinning. For the first time, it looks cut off from the warmth it was drinking.

Bren lowers her hand a fraction, still tense, while the air around Kynes clears. The scorched hand burns against the dark, but the drain stops.

Kynes holds the pressure steady, and the parasite's hold is broken. It remains present, but it is no longer feeding.

The pressure around Kynes goes slack. The cold shape peels away from his outline, dragged out by his own shadow and then denied purchase.

The parasite skitters back in a thin wash of vapor, and the violet field around Kynes tightens like a lid snapping shut.

His scorched hand steadies. The drain is gone, and the answer is plain now, his body is not the thing it was feeding on, it is the lock that kept the feeding possible.

The Entity recoils farther, displeased, and the air warms by a breath. Near the roots, the fresh clawed trail catches the dim light, newly exposed beyond the broken shimmer.

Kynes keeps the separation in place. The parasite is driven off his person, and the grove finally shows what it has been hiding.

Kynes drives the separation wider, and the grove answers with a hard, violet hush. The parasite lurches free of his seam and gets only shadow for purchase.

His shadow surges, then knives inward, a sea of black venom snapping at the cold shape. The Entity jerks as if struck from within.

The violet field tightens around Kynes’s outline, not as a cage, but as a seal. The parasite frays, starved of his life force and battered by the storm he throws at it.

A final lash of shadow tears through the vapor, and the cold form breaks apart into scraps of dark mist. The grove’s air lightens at once.

Kynes lowers to one knee beside the clawed trail and draws a tight gran arc around his hands and boots. Violet light from the containment field shivers over the roots as he closes his eyes and listens for the parasite’s shape inside the silence.

His breath steadies, then thins. The spell bites into the old tether points hidden in his own spirit, and the air around him answers with a cold recoil. Black mist tears loose from the last knot of hunger and curls away from his chest.

The Entity flickers at the edge of the briars, its shape thinning, its displeasure turning the frost brittle. Kynes keeps the circle closed and forces the severance through to the end.

The parasitic link snaps cleanly. The hunger dies in the open air, leaving only a scorched ache in Kynes’s palm and a shallow burn in the arcane circle where his power grounded itself.

The violet field remains, but weaker now. Beyond it, the fresh clawed trail still cuts into the dark brush, waiting for whatever made it, while Kynes stands with his hand smoking and the answer finally in reach.
