On the first landing, the glowing seam flares white-hot. The stair below Kynes no longer looks like a descent, it looks like a mouth that closes behind itself.

The waxed note answers the light in his hand. Its warning was true, the token does not just open paths, it spends the walker, and this stair is built to collect that cost again and again.

Kynes

Kynes

This is a loop.

Bren jerks back as the lower step folds into the upper in a clean, impossible curve. The passage ahead resolves into a dead end shaped like progress, a route made to feed the house on his old choices.

Bren

Bren

Kynes, stop. It is not leading out, it is leading back.

The seam dims, then brightens again, patient and certain. Somewhere below, the hall waits for him to repeat himself.

Bypass the looping stair trap

I start the chant of making, I use all of my insights and see where the trap is that will asorbe your soul.

Kynes lifts the staff and starts the making chant under his breath. The first notes catch on the stair, and the recursive curve shows itself as layered glyphwork, not stone, a trap stitched from consent and repetition.

Kynes

Kynes

The seam is a binding knot, not a passage.

The chant answers back. The red script peels into view along the loop, exposing a clause tucked beneath the tread, a soul tax meant to be paid each time the stair is named and stepped.

Kynes traces the pattern with cold focus. His insight catches the weak point where the loop closes on itself, a thin seam of borrowed authority hiding inside the transit clause.

He speaks the making again, sharper this time, and the false descent stutters. The stair does not break, but its claim loosens, the dead end becoming readable as a placed deceit.

A sting of backlash snaps up his arm, and the waxed note in his hand blackens at the edge. The cost lands cleanly, a shallow burn and a dimming of the ink, but the trap is laid bare.

Bren

Bren

There. You found it. Tell me if you can cut through it.

The stair waits, exposed and silent, the red script still twitching in the wood like a vein that knows it has been seen.

I use soul cutter to cut through it

Soul-Cutter comes free in Kynes’s hand. He lays its edge against the red script, and the blade drinks the clause cleanly from the tread.

The stair gives a low, sour shiver. Red lines split, then go still, their authority cut out as if someone has torn the signature from a contract.

The loop no longer folds back on itself. The false descent opens into an ordinary shaft, dark and narrow, with no hungry turn waiting to repeat.

Kynes

Kynes

The trap is dead.

Bren

Bren

Good. Keep moving before it remembers how to lie.

The waxed note in Kynes’s other hand stops smoking at the edge, and the shallow burn on his skin cools as the stair’s pressure drains away.

I cast dancing lights and send them ahead " we got a few months off this time"

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Kynes lifts his staff and threads a small spell into the dark. Two pale motes bloom above the shaft, then split into a tiny drifting swarm, blue-white and quiet.

The lights glide downward, painting the stone in soft bars and catching the old seams the stair tried to hide. No loop waits in the glow, only a plain drop and the far wall below.

Kynes

Kynes

We get a few months off this time.

Bren

Bren

If the house wants to lie again, it can wait its turn. Go on.

The burned edge on Kynes’s hand cools further as the light sinks ahead of him, and the waxed note stops curling at the corner.

Below, the drifting lights reveal a narrow ledge and a side notch in the wall, half-lost in shadow, where the shaft opens into a worked space.

Bren

Bren

There’s a landing below. I see it now. Your lights found more than the stair did.

✓ Quest Accepted

Descend into the worked space below the shaft

As we decided I chant again to see if the soul trap is indeed gone

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

The Recursive Trap of the Stairwell
Bren
Bren

Kynes draws in a thin breath and threads the chant again, low and exact. The shaft answers with a flat, ordinary silence, no recoil, no hungry echo.

Kynes

Kynes

That trap is gone.

The words die on the stone, but the proof holds. The burned edge on his hand tightens once, then settles, and the old red script does not stir.

A few loose grains tremble from the ledge below. The side notch stays dark and still, like a cut in the wall rather than a mouth.

The spell leaves Kynes with a dry taste of ash and a faint strain behind the eyes, the price of pushing truth through a stubborn seal.

Bren

Bren

Clean. I like clean. Take the landing.

Kynes lowers the staff and steps down toward the lower ledge, the shaft opening properly beneath him at last.

We head down

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

The Recursive Trap of the Stairwell
Bren
Bren

Kynes commits his weight to the descent, and the stair gives him no trick this time. He drops the last short span to the lower ledge in one controlled motion, boots scraping stone.

The worked space below opens out from the shaft, tight and deliberate, with cut blocks, a side notch, and old tool marks in the wall. The broken red script stays above, inert and out of reach.

Kynes

Kynes

The trap wanted a loop. This is just a room.

Kynes straightens on the ledge, staff in hand, and scans the lower chamber for the next lie. The air is cooler here, and the stone carries a faint, stale draft from deeper within.

Bren

Bren

You made it down. Stay sharp, I do not trust any of this yet.

Bren remains above by the opening, watching his landing with wary relief. Her attention shifts to the side notch as if expecting it to answer back.

A thin seam of dust lies undisturbed across the lower threshold, but the notch itself looks worked, not natural. It invites a choice, without saying what kind.
