The Domini saga

Kynes and Bren push through the jagged fissure into a cavern that should not exist under Phandelver. The air tastes of ozone and old stone, and the walls carry a slow red pulse like a distant heartbeat.

Ahead, the natural rock gives way to black geometry, smooth ribs and angles forcing the cavern into a hidden shape. Venom stirs against Kynes's palm, hungry and alert, while the Ledger's glow in Bren's pack flickers once.

At the cavern's center stands a split obelisk, ringed with faded red script and fresh scratches where something has been pulled free. The open wound in its base points deeper underground, toward the architects' heart.

Kynes tightens his grip on the staff and steps toward the breach, following the pulse into the depths.

The red pulse rolls over the split obelisk and catches the scratches at its base. Dust drifts from the opening below, slow as ash.

Bren shifts closer, not softening, just steadying herself beside him. Below the obelisk, the opening waits, dark and exact, as if it has already measured Kynes's return.

Kynes drops through the split opening, staff tucked close as loose grit skitters after him. The red pulse thins above, replaced by a colder dark that swallows his boots first.

Stone walls slide past in a narrow shaft, cut with old geometry and hairline veins of fading script. Dust keeps falling, but the passage holds.

Kynes lands hard on a slanted ledge below, knees flexing to absorb the drop. The air here tastes metallic and old, and the pulse comes from farther down.

Above him, Bren’s silhouette recedes at the rim of the breach, still guarding the opening. Below, the passage widens into a chamber mouth threaded with gold traces and dead red scratches.

Kynes sets his staff down, testing the ledge, and looks into the deeper dark. The way beneath Phandelver is open, but it is waiting.

Kynes commits his weight to the slanted drop and slides from the ledge, staff close to his ribs. Dust whirls past his shoulders as the chamber mouth below swallows the last of the red glow.

He drops through the gold-threaded dark, boots scraping stone once before the shaft opens wider beneath him. The geometry on the walls flashes by like an old warning, then vanishes into shadow.

Kynes lands inside the lower chamber with a hard, controlled bend of the knees. The impact sends a thin ring of grit across the floor, but the seam holds.

Ahead, the passage widens around a split obelisk sunk into the stone, its gold traces dim but still alive. Faint red scratches dissolve at the edges, as if something below has already started eating them away.

Kynes straightens beside the obelisk's base, now fully below the breach. Above, Bren is only a distant shape at the rim, and the dark under Phandelver pulls forward into a deeper cut.
