The shadow-crows dive at once, circling a jagged fissure that was nowhere in the rock a breath ago. Wind screams over the ridge, but the birds wheel tighter, urgent as a bell.

Kynes reaches the face of the cliff. The crows break apart into a fine black mist, and the mist clings to a thin seam in the stone, showing where the lattice thins and listens least.

Bren comes up beside him, staring at the revealed cut in the mountain. The camp behind them is already far away, reduced to coals and packed gear, while the hidden passage drinks the storm and stays silent.

Kynes studies the seam and feels the answer settle in cleanly. The crows are not just scouts. They are his warning net, and now the mountain itself has answered their cry.

That is new, and very useful.

The last of the mist trails into the fissure like ink in water. Ahead, the passage waits, narrow and protected, while the lattice beyond it goes dull and unreadable.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the valley beyond the fissure

Is this further away from the mountain that we came from

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 4)

The fissure does not merely lead deeper into the rock, but curves sharply away from the High Pass ridge, descending into a valley that has long been scrubbed clean of the Architect's violet static.

Kynes

Kynes

The mountain's pulse is fading behind us, and the air here tastes of nothing but cold stone and distance.

Bren

Bren

It is not just further, Kynes. The lattice is gone entirely, and the wind feels like it belongs to the world again, not the archive.

I slip into the fissure and follow its curve down into the valley.I keep low and move along the clean stone, watching the descent ahead

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

Kynes ducks deeper into the fissure, keeping low as the stone narrows around him. The wall is clean and dry under his hand, and the curve below takes them away from the ridge’s last light.

Kynes

Kynes

The passage is holding its shape.

Bren follows a step behind, then another, her shoulders easing as the wind thins behind them. Above, the opening shrinks to a pale seam, and the mountain’s noise drops away.

Bren

Bren

This is better. It feels like a real path, not a trap.

The fissure bends again, and the floor slopes into a darker natural run of stone. No violet lattice answers here, only cold rock, distance, and the muffled hush of the valley ahead.

Kynes keeps his staff close and moves with careful footing, watching the descent open before him. The safe curve carries them onward, untouched by the watchers behind.

Bren

Bren

If the mountain is done speaking to us for now, I will take the silence.

I keep moving down the valley passage

Kynes keeps moving, and the passage takes the choice from him by opening wider into a slanted run of black stone. The last seam of ridge light falls away behind them.

Bren follows at his shoulder, her footing sure now, and the air ahead turns still and cold. The valley passage is here, lower than the pass and stripped of any watcher glow.

Kynes

Kynes

The path opens ahead.

They descend in silence as the north wind fades to a distant scrape above the rock lip. No violet static answers, no hidden pulse stirs in the stone.

Bren

Bren

This is better. We can breathe here.

Kynes clears the last bend and reaches level ground in the valley passage, the route finally fully beyond the fissure. Behind them, the opening shrinks to a dark seam in the cliff.

Stay with me. Let’s see what this valley keeps from the light.
