The dark twine in Kynes’s hand jerks again, hard toward the broken floor beneath the ruined pedestal. The hidden compartment answers with a dry click, as if it has been waiting beneath the house all along.

He sets the twine into the groove. Old stone shifts, and a shallow cache opens to reveal sealed claim-rites, folded cloth, and a hand-cut seal marked with the valley’s first claim.

The claim-rites glow once, then settle into Kynes’s grasp like a proof the land cannot deny. Beneath the house, the old question finally answers itself, what remains is not a trap, but a tool.

Kynes lifts the sealed stack from the cache, and the cloth beneath it gives way to a narrow stone seam running under the broken pedestal.

His gaze follows it to the wall, then down into the floor, where a second line of cut stone answers the first in the same hand-made rhythm.

Bren leans in at his shoulder as Kynes turns the claim-rites over, and a hidden notch catches the light along the edge of the room.

The floor gives a soft, answering pulse, like a heartbeat under stone, and the line of the next cache seam becomes plain enough to open.

Kynes gives the chamber a quick, practiced look, then starts opening the caches in sequence. The twine slips through each hidden latch cleanly, and the floor keeps answering with that steady under-stone pulse.

Each opened space is small, careful, and old, claim-rites, folded cloth, seal-marks, all laid in the same hand-made rhythm. The valley is not hiding a trap, it is showing him its kept places.
