The cache exhales cold air from the half-open seam. Tall grass parts nearby, and a hooded figure steps out with one hand raised, not in threat, but to show empty fingers.

Vetta

Vetta

Easy. If that cache is waking, I can help keep it from biting.

Bren shifts at Kynes’s side, wary. Mara angles closer to the opened stone, reading the newcomer’s stance before the words can sour.

Vetta

Vetta

I followed the trace here. The valley is full of hungry holds, and this one is no different. Let me look before someone gets marked.

The hood falls back. Vetta’s face is sharp with travel and sleeplessness, but her eyes stay fixed on the pale mark inside the cache, not on Kynes. She kneels near the opening without crossing it.

Vetta

Vetta

This is a claim-space, not a trap. The inner latch is old valley craft. If you want what is hidden, I can tell you how to take it cleanly.

Kynes

Kynes

She knows the lattice pattern.

The grass rustles behind her, then stills. Vetta keeps her hands visible, waiting for permission to speak further.

“hey Vetta long time no see. I have two questions. What trace did you follow, Vetta? and how do you know valley craft?"

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Kynes

Kynes

Hey, Vetta. Long time no see. What trace did you follow, and how do you know valley craft?

Vetta

Vetta

I followed the valley’s leftover pull, the kind that hides under stone and remembers a hand that opens it. It leads to claim-spaces, old latches, and places people tried to keep quiet.

Vetta

Vetta

As for valley craft, I learned from living among them, from watching what the hidden hollows do when they are fed, sealed, or betrayed. This one feels familiar.

Mara

Mara

Familiar how? Because you recognize the shape, or because you’ve seen the same work before?

Vetta

Vetta

Both. The latch key is not brute force, it is consent made precise. You turn the stone by matching its old answer, not by breaking it.

Vetta lifts a small key of dark stone and lays it flat in her palm, offering it openly rather than reaching for the cache. The pale mark inside the opening catches the faint light and seems to wait.

Bren

Bren

And why offer help now, to us?

Vetta

Vetta

Because the square remembers him, and the buried things do too. If this place is going to stay theirs, someone has to help it stay honest.

✓ Quest Accepted

Determine whether Vetta can be trusted with the cache

"so how are things at the hall?" I ask

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Kynes

Kynes

So how are things at the Hall?

Vetta

Vetta

Busy. The Hall keeps taking in scraps, memories, names, all the things people think they can leave behind. It is quieter than it was, but not peaceful.

Mara

Mara

Quieter is good. Quiet can mean settled, or it can mean hidden. I need to hear which.

Vetta

Vetta

Bren would call it safer. I would call it watchful. The old pull is not gone, Kynes, it only has less to bite into.

Bren

Bren

And the people there. Are they holding up, or are they being held?

Vetta

Vetta

Both, sometimes. The square remembers him, and the Hall remembers that too. Some of them are uneasy, but they are still choosing to stay.

Vetta

Vetta

If you want the plain answer, things are steady enough to breathe in. Not healed, not finished, but steady.

" who's him, ?" I ask

Kynes

Kynes

Who is him?

Vetta

Vetta

The Hall means the one the square still remembers, Kynes. Not a name to be handed around lightly.

Mara

Mara

So it is a person, not a tale. That matters.

Vetta

Vetta

Someone the Hall keeps in mind because the place was touched hard. It has not forgotten the shape of that.

And another question,who's Rell?"

Kynes

And another question, who is Rell?

Vetta

Vetta

Rell is the hand that marked this place, and the wound still answers to his shape. Not here now, but still named by what he left behind.

The cache gives a thin violet click as if something inside has recognized the name. Bren shifts closer to Kynes, and Mara’s gaze sharpens on the pale mark, while Vetta keeps the key visible and does not reach for the stone.

" is Rell supposed to be another veriant of me?"

Kynes

Kynes

Is Rell supposed to be another version of me?

Vetta

Vetta

No. Rell is a maker of marks, not your echo. He leaves shapes behind, and others get bent around them.

Mara

Mara

That explains the old bite in the stone. It is not likeness, it is workmanship.

Bren

Bren

If Rell is only a hand, then the hand can still be cut away.

" if Rell is the hand, who's the head?"

If Rell is the hand, who is the head?

Vetta

Vetta

The head is whoever taught the hand where to point. Here, it feels old, local, and still listening.

Mara

Mara

Then this cache was not made to hide from strangers, but to answer a keeper.

Bren

Bren

So we do not open it for the wrong voice.

The cache’s violet static thins, then goes flat. The open latch stays ready, but the room’s quiet turns colder, as if something inside has finally been named and shut off.

"last question, why should I trust you"

Last question, why should I trust you?

Vetta

Vetta

Because I do not force the latch. I show it open, and I leave the choice with you.

Vetta

Vetta

If I meant to take this place, I would hide the key. I am not hiding it.

Bren

Bren

That is better than a promise. It is a choice made in front of us.

Mara

Mara

And the cache answers her cleanly. That matters.

The last of the violet static drains from the seam. Vetta lowers the dark stone key to the edge of the open cache and withdraws her hand, leaving the latch visible and untouched.

" I plan on taking the architects down, we'll need all the help we can get Vetta Can I trust you as I did before?" I ask as I tilt my head, I mentally send a crow to check Vetta

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -3)

Kynes

Kynes

I plan to bring the Architects down. We will need every hand we can trust. Can I trust you as I did before?

Kynes tilts his head, and a shadow-crow slips free from his will into the grass beyond the cache.

Vetta

Vetta

You can trust what I put in front of you. I am here, and I keep the latch visible.

Mara

Mara

That is still an answer, and a cleaner one than most.

Bren

Bren

A key shown in daylight is easier to judge than one hidden in a sleeve.

The crow returns with a single low circle over Vetta, then settles on Kynes’s staff. Its wings are clear of violet stain. Vetta keeps her hand open beside the cache, and the dark stone key stays where everyone can see it. The open claim-space remains intact, but the air is thinner now, as if the answer has cost the room its last excuse to hesitate.

I telekineticlly grab the latch and open the cashe trusting Vetta

Kynes lifts two fingers, and the latch rises from the obsidian by invisible force. The open cache answers with a soft inward click, as if it recognizes his hand before it touches stone.

Kynes

Kynes

The latch moves cleanly. Vetta’s key was real.

The hidden lid folds wider. Cold air slips out over old wax and dust, and the pale mark on the back wall catches the light in a thin, steady line.

Vetta

Vetta

There. No forcing, no crack in the seam.

Mara

Mara

That is a keeper’s opening, not a trap.

Bren

Bren

And Vetta kept her key where we could see it.

The latch key stays in Vetta’s open palm, untouched. The claim-space holds, but it is now plainly open, readable, and no longer waiting in doubt.
