The Watcher's MarkPhandelver
The Watcher's Mark

Mara moves first, fingers quick over the shutter latch and the doorframe. She checks for wax marks, thread, ash, anything that does not belong.

On the outer wall, her hand stops at a tiny etched sigil. Fresh. Hidden in the stone like a whispered warning.

Mara

Mara

We are being watched.

Inside the warm tavern, Kynes and Bren are still, but Mara’s attention has already shifted to the window. The watcher is close enough to mark the wall, not close enough to show a face.

Mara

Mara

Kynes, Bren, stay low. I found a mark outside.

Her jaw tightens. She weighs the sigil once more, then the door, then the street beyond the shutters. Confront the watcher now, or move them before the trap closes.

✓ Quest Accepted

Expose the watcher outside the tavern

I will shadow-step to the alleyway to catch the watcher before they flee.

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +1)

The Watcher's Mark

Kynes slips from the warm room in a blink of shadow, landing hard in the narrow alley beside the tavern. The stone still holds the fresh sigil, and the air smells of rain, soot, and old magic.

Kynes

Kynes

The mark was laid close. Too close.

Bren reaches the doorway behind him, tense and ready, while Mara stays near the threshold, staring into the street. The alley is empty except for a moving smear of dark cloak at the far end.

Kynes closes the distance in one silent step. The watcher freezes, half-turned, caught between flight and fear.

The Watcher

The Watcher

Wait. I did not come to fight.

Kynes’s shadow gathers around the watcher’s boots and pins them to the cobbles. A thin signet cord drops from the figure’s sleeve, clinking against the alley stones.

The hood slips back just enough to show a pale, startled face and a House Xar listening charm at the throat. From the tavern door, Bren sees it at once.

Bren

Bren

That is one of them. Hold them there.

The alley’s far wall flashes once with the same etched sigil as the tavern stone, then goes dim, as if the watcher has lost the thread they were using to listen.

Quest Complete

Expose the watcher outside the tavern

I demand the watcher’s name

SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +0)

The Watcher's Mark
Kynes

Kynes

Name yourself.

The watcher swallows hard, pinned in place by the shadow at their feet. Their eyes flick to the tavern door, then back to Kynes, as if measuring whether the lie is worth the pain.

The Watcher

The Watcher

I am Seret. Only Seret. I was sent to listen, not to spill blood.

The House Xar charm at Seret's throat gives a weak, nervous twitch, then stills. Bren stays in the doorway, blade hand low but ready, while Mara leans out past her, studying the name like it might crack open into something truer.

Mara

Mara

Seret is afraid. That part is real.

Bren

Bren

Listen, then. Who sent you, and what do they think Kynes is?

Seret wets their lips and lifts their chin a fraction, as if the name has cost them the last scrap of pride. The fading sigil on the wall leaves a cold outline in the stone, and the alley goes very quiet around the three of them.

The Watcher

The Watcher

House Xar sent me. They call him a mark, not a man. They wanted proof the seal still answers.

✓ Quest Accepted

Get Seret to reveal who they work for

I show Seret the mark on my palm and ask if this is the proof their masters wanted.

SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +1)

Kynes turns his hand so the palm sigil faces Seret in the alley light. The mark gives off a dull, buried glow, and the shadow at Seret’s feet tightens like a leash drawn short.

Kynes

Kynes

This the proof your masters wanted? Say it plain.

Seret stares at the mark, then at Kynes, and their fear shifts into bleak recognition. The House Xar charm at their throat goes still, as if it has heard the answer before they speak it.

Seret

Seret

Yes. That is the sign. They wanted the bearer, not just the seal. They wanted to know it still answers you.

Bren’s eyes narrow in the doorway, but she says nothing. Mara studies Seret’s face, then the sigil on Kynes’s palm, as if fitting one ledger line to another.

Seret

Seret

House Xar keeps a listening lattice on the coast. My orders come through it, folded in cipher and witness marks. I was sent to confirm the mark, and report what it does.

Seret swallows and adds, softer now, with no pride left to protect them. The cold afterimage of the alley sigil lingers on the wall, while the charm at their throat remains silent and inert.

Seret

Seret

If you want the name above mine, ask for the lattice key. I can give you that, if you are asking who owns the chain.

Quest Complete

Get Seret to reveal who they work for

" how about you hand over the lattice key and your orders eh, I might let you live."

SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +2)

The Watcher's Mark

Kynes tightens the shadow at Seret’s ankles just enough to make the choice feel real. The alley goes still, except for the faint ache of his palm sigil and the tavern’s warm light bleeding across the stones.

Kynes

Kynes

Hand over the lattice key, and your orders too. You might live if you do.

Seret

Seret

Seret’s breath catches. “The key is not a coin to pass from hand to hand. It is folded into the orders themselves.”

They swallow, then slowly reach beneath their collar and pull free a thin waxed strip stamped with House Xar cipher, the edge marked in gold. The listening charm at their throat remains mute.

Seret

Seret

“Take it. The sequence is written twice, once for the lattice and once for the watcher who reads it.”

Bren shifts in the doorway, ready but holding back. Mara leans out farther, eyes fixed on the cipher strip as Seret’s hands come away empty.

Seret

Seret

“If House Xar answers tonight, they will answer to that key. The coast post is listening for your mark now.”

Kynes takes the strip, and the faint resonance in his hand settles under the wax like a trapped spark. On the wall, the cold outline of the faded sigil does not return, but somewhere beyond the tavern, the silent lattice waits.

✓ Quest Accepted

Keep the tavern safe from House Xar watchers

+ New Item Acquired

House Xar cipher strip

I read the cipher strip by the doorway

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Watcher's Mark

By the doorway, Kynes turns the waxed strip beneath the spill of lamplight. His arcane sight catches the cipher’s second skin, and the ink peels open into a lattice sequence, then a watcher’s note tucked inside the same fold.

Kynes

Kynes

Two orders, one key. House Xar likes its secrets crowded.

The strip answers with a clean, cold pulse through his palm. Three coastal sinkpoints, one listening post, and a command to report the mark rather than seize it.

Seret

Seret

If they see the flare, they will know I failed. If they do not, they will think the lattice still stands.

Bren’s hand shifts nearer her blade. Mara’s eyes narrow as the hidden sequence settles in Kynes’s grip, and the tavern wall behind them keeps its empty, scarred silence.

Seret

Seret

The watcher post is waiting for your sign. This strip proves the coast line is active tonight.

Kynes folds the cipher strip shut, and the faint resonance in his palm sinks low, masked under wax. The alley stays dark, but the lattice has a name now, and it is listening.

I show Bren the watcher’s note

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +3)

The Watcher's Mark

Kynes lifts the cipher strip from the doorway light and turns it toward Bren instead of the alley. The wax catches the lamp glow, and the watcher’s note shows through the fold like a pale vein.

Kynes

Kynes

Bren, look at this. The note is inside the same strip.

Bren

Bren

Let me see it.

Kynes opens the fold just enough for her to read. The hidden lattice sequence and the command to report the mark sit side by side, neat and cruel.

Bren

Bren

They are not hunting blind. They are measuring him.

Mara

Mara

Three sinkpoints, a listening post, and a report order. That is a chain, not a rumor.

Bren

Bren

So the coast line is active, and they want word if Kynes flares. Good. Now we know what they think they are watching.

Bren’s hand eases back from her blade, but her eyes stay hard on the strip. Kynes folds it shut again, and the faint pressure in his palm settles under the wax, quiet for the moment.

What do you mean flares I ask seret

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

Kynes

Kynes

What do you mean by flares?

Seret

Seret

When the mark stirs, the lattice feels it. A watcher post can taste the pulse, even through stone and distance.

Seret

Seret

If it flares hard enough, the coast line wakes. Quiet is what keeps them blind.

Bren

Bren

So the strip was not just a report order. It was a measure for his heartbeat too.

Seret

Seret

Yes. House Xar listens for change, not just presence. A calm mark reads as nothing. A bright one becomes a signal.

Mara

Mara

Then the strip is a key and a leash at once.

Seret swallows and nods toward Kynes's hand. The lingering pressure under the skin stays buried, but now its rules are plain. Bren and Mara exchange one quick look, and the cipher strip no longer seems like a message. It is a meter.

Next question seret, why

SUCCESS (Good Intimidation, rolled +2)

Kynes

Kynes

Next question, Seret. Why?

Seret

Seret

Because House Xar does not waste a listening line on vanity. They wanted to know if your mark still answers, and what it answers to.

Seret

Seret

If it flares, they learn you are here. If it stays calm, they learn you are teachable. That is what the watcher post wants from you.

Seret looks past Kynes's shoulder, toward the tavern wall and the cold outline left by the fading sigil. The answer strips the surveillance bare, not as a hunt, but as a test of obedience and reaction.

Bren

Bren

So they are measuring whether he bends, not just where he stands.

Mara

Mara

A signal can be bait, not just a warning.

Seret gives a small, brittle nod. In Kynes's hand, the cipher strip sits like a handled threat, its hidden lattice now exposed as a map of how far the coast can feel him. The alley stays quiet, but the silence has changed shape.
