The Valley Answers Back

Bren

Kynes hauls the first timber beam from the opened cache, and Bren braces the other end beside him. The hidden valley answers at once, a low thrumming rolling up through the ground like a buried drum.

Bren

Bren

It knows we are taking from it.

The golden tether between them brightens, then beats in time with the earth. Dust trembles from the beam in Kynes’s hands, and the shelter hollow ahead feels suddenly farther away.

Kynes

Kynes

The pulse matches the tether.

Bren

Bren

Kynes, it is answering us. Not the wood, the ground.

She shifts her grip and looks down at the mossy soil, wary but steady. Beneath their feet, the buried ward keeps time with each step, as if weighing every load they move toward making this place theirs.

Kynes sets the timber down beside the sheltered hollow. The thrumming does not stop, it deepens, and the valley makes plain its bargain, claim the refuge and it listens back.

I sit down a moment and look puzzled"Bren love I know you don't know wizard stuff , however when we used the shadow fell escape...we go far away. Explain how we spent two sperate trips and end up back in the hedge we created

Kynes lowers himself beside the timber and sits with a puzzled look while the valley hums on around the cache. Bren eases down near him, watching the moss shift under the buried ward as if it were listening.

Kynes

Kynes

Bren, I know you do not know wizard stuff, but when we used the Shadowfell escape and went far away, how did we end up back at the hedge we made?

Bren

Bren

Because the place remembers us now. I do not think it carried us back, Kynes, I think we crossed something and came out where our choice still had weight.

Bren

Bren

If you want, we can sit here a moment and trace it together, step by step, until it makes sense.

I look down at the cashe, because I am done with the likes of this,I think we need to move on away from a lot of it.

Kynes looks down into the open cache, but the valley’s hum answers first. The moss tightens over the roots, the buried ward stirs like a throat clearing, and the supplies seem suddenly too loud to keep.

Kynes

Kynes

He needs to move on from this if he can.

Bren watches the earth and quietly shifts closer, ready to follow, while the ground keeps listening.

Kynes leaves Oakhaven outskirts behind and arrives at town.

Let's go to town, I need to see a mapmaker

Town noise swallows the valley hush. Wet cobbles, sagging eaves, and shuttered lanes crowd around Kynes as he and Bren reach the market edge, the golden tether between them giving one steady pulse.

A painted sign turns in the wind above a narrow stall of parchment and chalk. The mapmaker sits inside, hunched over a desk, with rolled charts stacked like little walls.

Kynes crosses to the stall and stops just inside the awning, staff in hand, the damp light catching on his shadowed glove.

Kynes

Kynes

I need a mapmaker.

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

Then you have one. River roads, ridge paths, house marks, or something stranger?

Bren pauses a step behind him, eyes moving from the rolled charts to the street. The valley’s hum is gone here, but the old listening has not been replaced by peace.

The mapmaker reaches for a charcoal stick and waits. Kynes has the stall, the charts, and a question now hanging in the air.

Kynes

Do you have a map of the known world I can see?

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

I do. If you mean the old roads too, I have those as well.

The mapmaker pulls a large rolled chart from the stack and spreads it across the desk. Inked coasts, rivercuts, and ridge lines flare into view under the awning.

Bren leans in beside Kynes, but her attention snaps to the lower edge of the chart where a faint greenish stain crawls over the paper like damp moss.

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

That stain was not there this morning.

Kynes sees it too, the hidden valley’s hum answering through the paper. The stain twitches, then spreads toward the marked supplies routes, and the chart gives off a dry, earthy breath.

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

Take a careful look, quickly. If this is tied to your business, the paper is not staying still.

I do a chant of making and to see if there is a location that is not tied to the architects network

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Valley Answers Back
Bren
Bren

Kynes lifts the chant off the map and lets it sink through the stall, through the street, through the valley itself.

The green stain shivers, then thins into a pale network of clear places, blank hollows the Architect lines do not hold.

Kynes

Kynes

There is a gap. Not here. Somewhere farther south.

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

That is no ordinary pattern. Show me where it breaks.

Bren straightens beside him as the chart’s dry breath turns sharp and cold, and the stain pulls toward one untouched pocket beyond the road markings.

The mapmaker’s charcoal slips from his fingers. On the paper, one valley hollow darkens cleanly free of violet thread, while the rest of the routes tremble around it like a net sensing a cut.

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

That hollow, it is not tied. If you mean to shelter something, you should go there now.

I put the location in my minds eye flip the mapmaker a gold coin and open a portal to the location. Me and Bren step through and we close the gate after

Bren

Kynes fixes the hollow in his mind, flips a gold coin to the mapmaker, and the stall’s air folds inward with a dry, glassless shimmer. Bren steps in close at his side as the chart gutters flat and the coin’s bright arc vanishes into the opening seam.

Mapmaker

Mapmaker

By the south break... yes. Go while it holds.

Kynes and Bren pass through together, the gate snapping open around them like a darkened eye and then narrowing behind their shoulders. The map stall, the street noise, and the paper smell fall away at once.

They arrive in the untethered hollow under a lid of low stone and root-shadow, where old cloth bundles, cut timber, and canvas lie stacked in neat, forgotten order. The valley hum is louder here, and the ground seems to listen back.

As Kynes’s boots touch the soil, the hum turns hungry. The hidden cache stirs, the moss draws tight, and the earth reaches for the warmth in him like it wants payment.

Bren

Bren

Kynes... the ground wants something from you.

The valley’s answer rises through the cache, not a voice, but a demand. Keep the supplies hidden, or let the refuge expose itself.

✓ Quest Accepted

Decide what to do about the valley’s hunger

Did we just return to the hedge location

NO (VeryUnlikely, rolled 48)

The hollow is not the hedge, and the soil beneath Kynes's boots lacks the familiar, warded stillness of their previous sanctuary. The valley floor remains cold and alien, its hunger distinct from the hedge's protective silence.

I cloak us in my shadow wards to keep us from all manor of surveillance and detection by anyone and everything

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Valley Answers Back
Bren
Bren

Kynes draws a thin veil of shadow over the hollow, and the air around the cache dulls at once. The ward settles over him and Bren like a silent hood, muting the valley’s prying hum.

Kynes

Kynes

The edges of the clearing vanish from notice.

The grey moss recoils, then stills. Beneath the timber, the roots loosen their grip by a finger’s breadth, as if they lose the shape of the two figures standing above them.

Bren

Bren

That is better. It cannot taste us as easily now.

The golden tether between Kynes and Bren gives a soft answering pulse, then sinks into the shadow ward without dimming.

For one breath, the hollow feels hidden. Then the buried ward in the soil answers the cloak, and the whole cache goes very still.

A deeper pull rises from under the timbers, not a sound but a demand. The valley’s hunger wakes and presses upward toward Kynes’s warded hands.

Does the valleys hunger com from its own spirit

YES (Likely, rolled 22)

The Valley Answers Back
Bren
Bren

The shadow ward ripples, not from the wind, but as if the earth itself inhales. Kynes feels a sudden, sharp resonance against his palm, a psychic echo that is not the Architect's cold logic, but a raw, ancient appetite that predates the lattice.

Kynes

Kynes

It is not a machine. The valley is alive, and it is starving.

Bren

Bren

Kynes, look at the roots. They are not just holding the timber, they are trying to feed on it.

I summon a way to communicate with the valley

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Valley Answers Back
Bren
Bren

Kynes’s chant hangs in the hollow, and the purple moss goes still. Then the roots answer back, not with words, but with a slow, wet pulse through the timber and into his bones.

Kynes

Kynes

The valley hears me.

A thin shimmer gathers above the beam, shaping itself into a dim listening trace. Bren stiffens beside him, eyes on the soil, while the golden tether at Kynes’s wrist gives one hard beat.

Bren

Bren

It is waiting for a price, Kynes.

The cache lid creaks on its own. Dust slides from the seam as the roots press closer, and the hollow’s quiet turns hungry.

Kynes answers the pulse with his own magic, and the shimmer resolves into a clear, low pressure of presence. The valley does not speak in tongues, but it offers a choice, abandon the supplies or lend it strength.

The earth leans inward, impatient now, while Bren watches Kynes for the decision that will either steady the cache or leave it exposed.

Is this cashe related to any other cashe we came across

YES (Likely, rolled 39)

The Valley Answers Back
Bren
Bren

As Kynes channels his magic into the cache, the violet residue on the roots flares, revealing a pattern identical to the seal-stone he recovered in the Oakhaven clearing. The cache is not a random store, but a linked node in the same network that bound the wayhouse and the mill house.

Kynes

Kynes

The same hand that hid the tether in the mill house left this cache here.

Bren

Bren

Kynes, look at the markings on the timber. They match the ones we found in the hidden chamber, the same rhythm, the same cold intent.

Is this from the architects

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 78)

The violet script pulses with a rhythmic, mechanical coldness that confirms the Architects' design, yet the energy feeding it is not theirs alone. It is a parasitic graft, a stolen Architect signature repurposed by a local hand to anchor the valley to the wider lattice.

I take a strand of me and bren's teather, I alter the strand for it to stop the hunger and for it to free it's self from the architects as me and Bren have done. I then introduced the single small strand to see what happens.

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Valley Answers Back
Bren
Bren

Kynes threads a sliver of the golden bond through the violet knot, and the hunger recoils as if it tastes daylight for the first time. The borrowed Architect pattern loosens, stripped of its need to feed.

Kynes

Kynes

The shape holds. It is no longer drinking.

He lowers the altered strand into the cache seam. The roots twitch, then go still, as the strand settles without latching to the soil.

The violet pulse thins to a weak flicker and slides off the timber beam like rain off stone. Bren watches, shoulders easing a fraction as the valley’s pressure breaks.

Bren

Bren

It is not feeding. It is deciding.

The hollow answers with one final shudder, then the buried hum turns inward, no longer pressing at their hands. The cache lid rests open, quiet, and the roots release their grip on the wood.

Bren steps closer to the cache edge, wary but steady, while the last violet stain drains from the beam into a faint, harmless sheen. The valley has changed state, the hunger gone from grasping to watchful.
