The Domini saga

The severance pedestal throbs once, then spits a pulse of Domini light across the broken chamber. Around Kynes, the floor buckles hard, and a crack opens toward the dark below.

Bren lunges to Kynes's side as a slab shears free behind them. Stone grinds, dust pours, and the only safe ledge is the narrow rib of intact floor lit by the pedestal's rhythm.

Kynes plants his staff, reads the pulse, and steps with it, crossing to the next intact slab just as the old chamber caves where he stood.

Ahead, the Domini glow reveals a split in the ruin, one branch dropping into a dead sinkhole, the other angling toward a slanted passage hacked into the ancient wall.

Behind them, the severed tether leaves a faint, ragged ache in the stone, but the pedestal's pulse now points forward. If Kynes follows it fast enough, the collapse becomes his exit.

The slanted passage catches them in a hard slant of dust and old air. Kynes lands first, Bren at his side, and the vault groans behind them like a door trying to remember how to close.

The Domini glow runs along the angled wall in thin, trembling veins. Beneath it, the floor is rough-hewn and intact, but the stone farther back is still shedding dust into the sinkhole they have left behind.

The passage is holding.

Kynes keeps one arm around Bren’s waist for balance, staff angled out for support. The shove of the void-step leaves a faint violet wash on the blank book at his belt, then the light gutters out.

Ahead, the passage dips toward a dark bend, but behind them the collapse deepens with a sudden, wet crack of stone. A thin seam in the wall flashes with folded alarm light, then seals itself under the strain.

Something below the floor answers with a low, ominous vibration, steady as a buried heartbeat. The route forward is open, but it is narrow, slanted, and waiting for Kynes’s next move.
