The Core of the Collapse

The corridor spills into a vast chamber of living records. Shelves of script ripple like skin, and the air bites with ozone and old ink. Kynes’s brass index jerks hard toward the central dais.

Kynes

Kynes

The source is directly ahead.

Bren stops at Kynes’s flank, blade ready, eyes fixed on the dais. The Spectral Scribe lingers behind the broken seal, bound and trembling as the walls keep writing without a hand.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

They are here. The architects feed the vault from below, and the chamber is already answering them.

A pulse rolls through the room. The script on the walls twists toward the dais, then peels back to reveal a black, throat-like seam in the stone. Something vast stirs beneath it, hungry and awake.

Bren

Bren

Kynes, that is the core. If they finish shaping it, the district goes with them.

The brass index snaps straight, locked on the seam. Ahead lies the architects’ chamber, and with it the chance to stop the collapse before it swallows Phandelver.

✓ Quest Accepted

Break through the architects’ defensive wards

I look at Bren " neat., Looks like I'm going to have to go for a very enthusiastic walk" I heard right to the architects with a hungery sea of shadows, a fully charged void scar and a hungery soul cutter. " I wonder" I open my pocket dimension, pull a domini memory crystal out and feed it to my sea of shadows.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

The Core of the Collapse

Kynes lifts the Domini memory crystal from his pocket space and feeds it into the waiting spill of shadows. The darkness takes it at once, hungry and intimate, and the brass index shudders in his grip.

Kynes

Kynes

Time to go.

Black light crawls up his arm as the void scar drinks deep. The chamber’s crimson pulse stutters, then tightens around the central seam like a throat swallowing hard.

Bren shifts closer at his flank, blade angled low, eyes narrowed at the seam. The Spectral Scribe recoils against the broken seal, its bound script flaring raggedly.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

That power is drawing them open. The wards are not holding, they are being read.

The shadows thicken around Kynes’s scar and soul-cutter, fed and restless. Ahead, the black seam twitches wider, and the hidden chamber below answers with a cold, waiting pulse.

+ New Item Acquired

Domini memory crystal

I open a small face size portal to view Walter. " Boo" is all I say followed by " so Walter we met someone you might like she your type" I move the portal so I can show Walter the scribe

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Core of the Collapse

Kynes twists the shadows open beside him, and a palm-sized veil of dark glass blooms in the air. The brass index gives a faint shiver, then stills.

Kynes

Kynes

Boo.

Kynes

Kynes

So, Walter, we met someone you might like. She is your type.

He tilts the little portal toward the bound scribe. On the other side, Walter’s dim shape gathers in the dark, framed by the flicker of the seal within the fractured crystal.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

You show ghosts to ghosts now? ...No, wait. This one is not a ward-sheen. It has a mind.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

Careful, Walter. If he can open that, he can also read what is trying to open below us.

The chamber does not strike, but it listens. The seam in the dais flexes wider by a hair, while the crimson script in Kynes’s scar flickers against the new opening.

" so she your type Walter?" I ask

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

The Core of the Collapse
Kynes

Kynes

So she is your type, Walter?

The little shadow window trembles with Kynes's dry phrasing. The bound scribe goes still, then the faint shape within the portal seems to tilt its head as if listening for the joke's edge.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

That is not my concern. But... it is a committed kind of terrible line.

Walter

Walter

I have heard worse introductions. This one at least has structure.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

Huh. He does have taste, then. Dangerous, but taste.

A thin rasp of amused static passes through the chamber. The seam in the dais stays open, the crimson scar on Kynes's palm dimming and brightening like a patient bruise. The brass index lies quiet in his hand, pointing into the dark.

Walter

Walter

If you are both done testing whether I can be flustered, the wards below are already failing.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

And if you are both done being smug, I can tell you which failure comes first.

" Bren love they'll make a cute couple, ok Walter I'll bring you a date." And I close the portal

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

The Core of the Collapse
Kynes

Kynes

Bren, love, they will make a cute couple. Walter, I will bring you a date.

The shadow window shivers with the joke, then begins to fold in on itself.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

You are unbearable. But that is a cleaner line than most.

Walter

Walter

I am choosing to take that as approval.

Bren's mouth twitches despite her watchful stance, and the scribe's bindings slacken by a breath as the portal thins.

Then Kynes closes his hand. The shadow window snaps shut, leaving only dark air above the dais and a faint tremor through the fractured seal below.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

Fine. First failure comes from the wards under the archive. They are shedding their outer logic.

"logic" I say with a gasp."wait until it meets my common sense. And maybe these architects wore their brown pants"

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

The Core of the Collapse
Kynes

Kynes

Logic, then. Wait until it meets my common sense.

Kynes

Kynes

And if these architects are clever, they are probably already regretting their own decisions.

The chamber takes the line like a weight lifted. Kynes keeps his hand steady over the seal scar, and the crimson pulse in it settles into an even, watchful throb.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

That is better. The first failure is not the wards themselves, it is their outer logic. They are trying to defend a door that no longer agrees it is a door.

Bren lowers her shoulders a fraction, still guarding the dais, while the brass index at Kynes's side gives off a faint, dry glint toward the fractured crystal seal.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

Press there, and the ward will either collapse or demand tribute from the one holding the breach open. Either way, it will answer.

The room goes quiet enough to hear dust slide from the broken stone. No alarm sounds, only the cold seam below the dais widening by a hair as it waits for Kynes's next move.

" how about no" I stab the dais with soul cutter "

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -1)

The Core of the Collapse

Kynes drives the Soul-Cutter down into the dais seam. Stone shrieks, and the fractured crystal seal spits a thin veil of red light across his hands.

The blade bites true. The seam jerks wide, then locks open with a hard, ugly crack, as if the chamber itself flinches.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

There. That was not a ward yielding. That was a ward choosing bloodless failure.

A pulse runs through the floor, not outward this time, but down into Kynes's scar, testing the line between his void-tether and the lock below.

Bren

Bren

The seal is open, but the room is not done with us.

Dust falls in a sudden sheet from the fractured crystal above the dais. Beyond the widened seam, a dark throat shows through, ringed with fading crimson script and the brass index glinting at its edge.

The Spectral Scribe

The Spectral Scribe

Proceed, and the next answer is either the architects, or what they left to guard them.
