Scene152
The Stranger at the WatchtowerRidge above the ruined watchtower
The Stranger at the Watchtower

Kynes and Bren crest the ridge and step into the cold wind, leaving the gold hush below. Ahead, the ruined watchtower crouches over broken stone, half-swallowed by scrub and shadow.

The surface air bites at Kynes’s skin, clean and sharp after the archive’s warm depths. Bren slows beside him, scanning the slope and the black gaps in the tower walls.

Kynes

Kynes

The tower is abandoned, but not empty.

A small lantern glimmers near the ruins, where a hooded figure stands among toppled stones. The stranger does not flee, only waits, as if expecting Kynes to notice them first.

The Stranger

You came up from below. Good. I have words about the vault, if you want the truth before your enemies find it.

Bren shifts closer to Kynes, hand near her blade. The wind drags grit across the ridge, and the ruined tower looms behind the stranger like a broken tooth.

Get the truth about the vault from the stranger

" Shiiiiiiit" I inhale " well who might you be and what truth do you have" I say exasperated.

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -2)

Kynes

Well. Who are you, and what truth do you have?

The stranger lifts their chin just enough for the lantern light to catch the edge of a weathered mouth. Rain-cooled wind rattles loose gravel around their boots.

The Stranger

I am the one who followed the old seam back to this hill. Call me The Stranger, if you want a name before the real one matters.

The Stranger

The truth is this, the vault is not merely sealed. It is listening, and it remembers who speaks with witness blood.

Bren’s posture eases a fraction, though her hand stays close to her blade. The lantern flame steadies, as if the figure’s words have settled the air.

The Stranger

I came because your steps woke an old debt. If you want the rest, you need to hear why I was sent to this watchtower at all.

Kynes

Kynes

The truth is already older than the tower.

The stranger waits in the lantern glow, neither advancing nor retreating, offering the next piece without forcing it.

" Neat" is all I say

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Kynes

Kynes

Neat.

The stranger’s mouth twitches, almost a smile. Rain beads on the lantern glass, turning the light soft and gold between the stones.

The Stranger

That is a cruelly small word for a vault that eats names. But I hear the shape of your meaning.

The Stranger

I came because House Domini does not stay buried. It leaks through witnesses, through blood, through old promises somebody thought were done.

Bren glances from Kynes to the stranger, her guard still up, but her shoulders ease as the answer comes plain.

The Stranger

I was sent to this watchtower because I know the seam it keeps. And because someone had to meet the heir before the vault decided to speak louder than wise.

The lantern dips slightly as the stranger lowers it, offering the moment instead of pressing it.

The Stranger

If you want my real name, I will give it. If you want the rest of the truth, I will give that too. Which do you take first?

“God fucking dammit, we're doing another mysterious hooded asshole with cryptic information.” I turn to Bren , " can I eat this one?"

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Kynes

Kynes

Gods, we're doing another mysterious hooded bastard with cryptic information. Can I eat this one?

Kynes lets the threat sit like a blade on the rain-slick air. The stranger stills, lantern lifted, while Bren’s hand hovers near steel.

Mara

Mara

That is not the sort of joke one makes unless one can follow through.

Mara

Mara

If you mean to frighten me, you have succeeded. If you mean to bargain, I am still listening.

Kynes

Kynes

Then talk plain.

Mara

Mara

Plainly, House Domini taught the vault to remember witness blood. It wakes to names, consent, and debts, not to locks.

Bren’s gaze sharpens, then eases as the answer lands clean. The stranger lowers the lantern and reaches up, drawing back the hood.

Mara

Mara

Call me Halven. I was sent here to tell you the seam you found is not a door, it is a claim.
