As the foundation settles, Kynes returns to the side notch he nearly ignores. The worked stone looks ordinary, until his focus finds the seam hidden inside it.

The notch shifts with a dry click. A lens-like aperture opens in the masonry, cold and precise, an observation port built to watch the chamber without touching it.

The Ledger pulses in Kynes’s hand, then goes still. Its glow turns sharp and cold, matching the port’s stare as the chamber’s design finally makes sense.

Bren shifts beside Kynes, blade half-raised, eyes on the black lens. The lower passage feels less like a room now, and more like a place that has always been watched.

Kynes plants the staff tip against the wall, then drags dark grammar across the aperture’s edge. The lens shutters with a hard little bite.

Cold mist leaks out once, then stops. The black opening seals into plain stone, and a hairline crack of residual frost crawls across Kynes’s knuckles.

Bren lowers her blade a fraction, relief easing her shoulders. The chamber feels less exposed, though the pressure under the floor still waits, patient and wordless.

Kynes lets the complaint sit in the air, blunt and dry. The sealed wall stays silent, and the chamber does not answer for him.

A beat later, a familiar pressure stirs at the edge of thought, not a voice exactly, more a lazy attention brushing his name.

Bren huffs once, half laugh and half exhale, her blade staying low as she watches Kynes more than the stones.

The question lands in the narrow passage like a coin on stone. Bren goes still. The Ledger’s glow thins to a watchful line.

Bren’s eyes cut to the floor, then to Kynes’s knuckles, where the frost crack has started to pale. The passage stays quiet, but the silence feels measured now.
