Moonlight pools in the hollow, silvering the open ledger between Kynes and Bren. The name Nezznar glows faintly on the page, calm now, as if it has settled into place.

Bren
What do you truly expect to find when we face him?
Bren keeps her shoulder near Kynes’s, one hand resting by the book. Her voice is quiet, but it carries the weight of the road still ahead.

Kynes
The name is a lead, not an answer. Maybe a man. Maybe a mask.
A cool breeze brushes the hollow and dies against the stone. The ledger’s glow steadies, reflecting in Bren’s eyes as she studies Kynes’s face.

Bren
If he is guarding the mage, then we ask who taught him to hide. If he is the mage, then we ask what he wants.
She gives a small, crooked smile, more tired than amused. The tension in her shoulders loosens, and the night feels suddenly roomy enough to breathe in.

Bren
Whatever we find, I would rather face it with you than alone.
The ledger lies open between them, patient and untroubled. For a few heartbeats, neither reaches for the next page.
“"might as well get this out of the way, sorry about choking you back at the tower. You where sounding well ..what I mean is ...I was expecting a dagger in the back"”

The ledger stays open under the moon, and Kynes lets the apology come out plain, without polish. The hollow is still except for the soft rasp of page-edge against stone.

Bren
You thought I might strike first. I understand that better than I wish to.
Bren’s hand lifts, then stops short of the ledger. She lowers it again, careful, giving the space between them room to breathe.

Kynes
I expected a dagger in the back. You were sounding... I mean, I did not know what to trust.

Bren
And yet you still took my hand on the road, still stayed near me here.
A thin smile touches her mouth, brief and honest. She glances down at the name in the moonlight, then back to Kynes.

Bren
You do not need to apologize for caution. But I am glad you say it now, while the night is quiet.
Bren nudges the ledger a little closer between them, her shoulder easing against the stone as if the road ahead has already shrunk by one lonely mile.
“We sleep until first light and then start our way to phandelver”
