The last crimson threads sink into Kynes’s mark, and the terrace goes slack with a shudder. Then the ground gives way beneath the grass, opening a stone-lined chamber below.

Old foundation markers sit in a ring, half-buried and ancient, each stone cut with the first lines that ever named Phandelver. The air hums around them, tight as a drawn wire.

Sable

Sable

The markers are answering the Soul-Cutter. This is the seam. If anything can cut the lattice clean, it is here.

Kynes

Kynes

The resonance is real. The chamber is not just old ground, it is the town's root.

Bren braces at the rim of the pit, eyes on the trembling grass above, while Kynes feels the blade in his hand pull toward the stones like a key toward its lock.

Sable

Sable

Use the markers, Kynes. Sever this connection now, and Phandelver may keep its shape.

✓ Quest Accepted

Sever the lattice at the foundation seam

Kynes holds Soul-Cutter above the foundation seam but does not strike. “No. Cutting it only kills what we can see.” He places his void-scarred palm against one of the ancient markers and releases the counter-parasite he created into the remaining connection, allowing it to recognize the red script as prey and follow every parasitic thread back toward its source. “You found the root. Good.” Kynes smiles. “Now let's see where it grows.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Kynes lowers the Soul-Cutter without striking. Instead, he presses his void-scarred palm to a marker and lets the counter-parasite slip free into the seam.

The stone answers at once. Red threads twitch under the marker, then recoil as if tasting teeth. The hidden lattice stops being a wall and becomes a trail.

Kynes

Kynes

So it does feed.

The parasite drinks the nearest thread and pulls, patient and hungry, following every pulse beneath the foundation stones. Dust sifts from the ring as the chamber leans toward the source.

Sable

Sable

There. It is mapping the path upstream.

Bren

Bren

Good. Keep it moving. I do not trust that floor to stay honest.

A thin tremor runs through the chamber. Beneath the stones, the red route resolves into a direction, pointing deeper under Phandelver and toward something that still feeds the town.

Kynes doesn't push the counter-parasite or feed it additional power. He simply maintains the connection through his void scar and gives it time to hunt naturally, observing how it behaves without interference. “No rush. Let it feed.”

Kynes keeps his palm in place and lets the counter-parasite work. The thread it bites does not vanish, it follows, slipping under the marker and into the seam like blood finding a vein.

Kynes

Kynes

It is tracing the load, not guessing.

A thin red pulse runs through the foundation stone, then narrows into a line. The floor answers with a low creak, as if some buried weight shifts and remembers its shape.

Sable

Sable

That line is not random. It is taking the path that still carries pressure.

Dust lifts from the crack in a clean stream, drawn deeper under Phandelver. Kynes feels the pull in his scar, a cold tug that marks the route while costing him a sharp pulse of heat at the palm.

Bren

Bren

Keep steady. I see the route now.

The red thread settles into a clear bearing beneath the chamber floor, pointing toward the deeper seam. The ancient marker stays lit, and Kynes's hand comes away marked with a darkened stain where the parasite has fed.

I follow it to it's source, I cast sea of shadows at let them feed on any stray red script in the area as we follow the trail

Kynes rises and steps onto the bearing the line has exposed. His shadow spills ahead of him in a low, hungry sheet, tasting the floorboards and swallowing stray red flecks before they can cling to the stone.

Kynes

Kynes

The route is marked. Good.

The red thread runs under his feet like a seam of lit blood. Where it breaks through dust, the shadows drink it dry, and the glow thins to ash.

Sable

Sable

Stay on that line. It leads to the foundation seam beneath the old works.

Bren falls in close on Kynes’s flank, one hand near his back as the chamber tilts around the open fissure. Dust streams behind them into the dark route, pulled as if the wall itself is breathing it in.

Bren

Bren

Your shadows are clearing it. Keep going.

Ahead, the passage narrows around a stone lip etched with the master’s authority sigil, now dim and cracked. Kynes’s void scar warms in answer, a steady ache that matches the deeper pull.

I follow the line to the foundation seam, as I let the shadows eat the red script

Kynes follows the line, and the shadows go hungry. The red script peels off the stone lip in curling threads, then vanishes into the dark under his feet.

Kynes

Kynes

The seam is there. Keep it from hiding.

The passage opens wider ahead, not by force, but because the floor answers him. Dust streams inward in a steady draw, as if the chamber exhales through the crack.

Sable

Sable

Yes. The foundation seam is below this lip. Your void scar can anchor the cut.

Bren shifts closer, boots scraping stone, eyes fixed on the dim authority sigil as it flakes under the spreading dark.

Bren

Bren

If the scar takes the strain, do it now. The floor will not wait.

Kynes reaches the stone lip. The cracked sigil is only inches away now, and the red thread thins to a dead, gray seam beneath his shadow.

I drive the Soul-Cutter into the seam

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Foundation Chamber Revealed
Bren
Bren

Kynes drives the Soul-Cutter into the gray seam, and the stone takes the blade without a scream. The crack answers with a deep, clipped shiver, as if an old latch gives way under buried weight.

Kynes

Kynes

It fits. So much for the lie in the floor.

Red threads recoil from the cut and vanish into the dark. The authority sigil on the lip flakes apart, and dust floods inward through the opened line.

Sable

Sable

Yes. Hold it there. The foundation has taken the severance.

The chamber shifts. The passage below widens into a true descent, and the pit stops pretending to be a floor. The hidden route is no longer hidden.

Bren

Bren

It is cut. Look at that, Kynes. The whole seam is opening.

A cold pull runs up his arm from the Soul-Cutter, then steadies. The dark route below holds, the red script gone, the way forward laid bare.
