A Moment of Quiet Respite

The locked room holds its hush like a blessing. Hearthlight trembles over stone, and the town outside becomes only a soft blur beyond thick walls.

Bren sits near the fire, elbows on her knees, studying the embers as if they might answer her. Mara stands by the window, half-turned, keeping watch without making a show of it.

Kynes

Kynes

The room is warm. The walls finally feel still.

Bren

Bren

Three days was not enough to make me forget how close the world keeps coming, but it was enough to remember this room.

Mara

Mara

And enough to remind me that you both can sit still, when you have to.

Bren looks up from the coals, a small smile touching her mouth. Mara lets the curtain fall back into place and turns from the window, her guard easing at last.

Bren

Bren

Come sit with us, Kynes. For a little while, let the fire do the watching.

✓ Quest Accepted

Establish a permanent home in Phandelver

I sit by the fire and ask Bren what she envisions for our home here.

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

A Moment of Quiet Respite

Kynes lowers himself by the fire, staff laid within reach. The rush of the road seems to thin with his breath, leaving only heat, stone, and the soft crackle of embers.

Kynes

Kynes

The room holds.

Bren

Bren

I picture a place with a table that stays ours, and a door that closes without us flinching.

Mara

Mara

And a window with a view that does not feel like a warning.

Bren turns toward Kynes, resting one hand on the floor beside her knee. Mara eases away from the curtain and draws a slow line of air through the warmth, as if measuring the room’s peace.

Bren

Bren

I want shelves for the things we keep choosing to remember. Maps, notes, the ugly strips of proof, all of it. Not hidden, just kept.

Bren

Bren

And I want you to stop calling every safe corner temporary.

Kynes settles fully beside the hearth. The fire paints gold across the locked door, and for a moment the old road, the lattice, and the cliff scar feel far enough away to name as trouble instead of fate.

Mara

Mara

Then build it here. If Phandelver is where they keep looking, let it be where you keep living.

Bren

Bren

What do you call home, Kynes, when no one is demanding it from you?

“You,” I tell Bren. “Home is wherever I can wake beside you without wondering when we have to leave. But if we're staying... I'd like some land, a workshop, enough rooms for family and friends, and Preferably one without an ancient archive, cursed basement, listening lattice, blood seal, buried entity, or fucking prophecy underneath it.”

Kynes

Kynes

You. Home is wherever I can wake beside you without wondering when we have to leave. If we stay, I want land, a workshop, enough rooms for family and friends. Preferably without an ancient archive, cursed basement, listening lattice, blood seal, buried entity, or prophecy underneath it.

Bren

Bren

Good. Then we stop treating shelter like a rumor.

Bren

Bren

A table that stays ours, shelves for maps and proof, a door that closes, and a place that does not ask you to bleed for it.

Mara

Mara

And enough room that nobody has to stand watch just to feel honest.

Bren reaches across the fire and catches Kynes’s hand, holding it there as if measuring the promise by touch instead of words. Mara watches the locked door once, then lets her shoulders ease.

Bren

Bren

Then let Phandelver be the place we build, not the place we pass through.

Outside, the night stays dark and distant. Inside, the room settles around them like something claimed, and the gold scar on the cliff can keep shimmering without pulling him loose.

I ask about buying a house in Phandelver

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Kynes

Kynes

I want to ask about buying a house here, in Phandelver.

Bren

Bren

Then we buy one. Not a room, not a pause, a house.

Mara

Mara

Stone walls, a real door, and no one telling us when to vanish. That sounds better than running.

Bren keeps Kynes’s hand in both of hers, thumbs resting over his knuckles as if sealing the decision into something solid. Mara leans a shoulder to the wall by the window, no longer guarding the dark so hard.

Bren

Bren

Tomorrow we ask who owns land, who sells, and who can keep their mouth shut. I can handle the asking.

Mara

Mara

I can handle the ledgers, the names, and the price lists. If the town tries to cheat us, I will notice.

The room feels warmer for it, not with fire, but with the shape of a plan. Outside, the gold scar on the cliff gives one faint, cautious shimmer through the night, and inside nobody flinches.

Bren

Bren

A home is a better answer to a watcher than a road is.

"And when we have kids Bren, Mara can be the mysterious Aunt "

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

A Moment of Quiet Respite
Kynes

Kynes

And when we have kids, Mara can be the mysterious aunt.

Mara

Mara

Mysterious suits me. I can already see the stories. I arrive, know everything, and refuse to explain how.

Bren

Bren

Then she gets the good chair near the fire, and the child gets to learn that family can be sharp without being cruel.

Mara’s mouth twitches into a real smile. Bren’s thumbs slow over Kynes’s knuckles, and the room settles around the idea as if it belongs there.

Mara

Mara

I would teach them the names in the ledgers first. If they are going to inherit a house, they should know what lives in its books.

Bren

Bren

And I will teach them which doors to trust, and which ones only pretend to be doors.

Outside, the gold scar on the cliff gives its cautious shimmer. Inside, Bren draws Kynes’s hand to her chest for a heartbeat, and Mara looks away with easy, unguarded warmth.

Is the cliff scar still broadcasting our decoy?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 40)

A Moment of Quiet Respite
Kynes

Kynes

The cliff scar is still humming. It is holding the decoy, and House Xar is still biting.

Kynes feels the faint, rhythmic pulse of the cliff scar through the floorboards, a steady golden vibration that confirms the deception remains intact. The lattice is still feeding on the echo, oblivious to the fact that the real signature has long since slipped away.
