Escaping the Ink-Black Corruption

Kynes, Bren, and Nezznar step out into the cool evening, and the cobbles answer with a wet shimmer of ink-black script. The writing crawls underfoot, knitting the street into the same hungry pattern that swallowed the desk.

Nezznar

Nezznar

It is spreading fast. If it catches the square, the whole district will start to answer to the office.

Bren

Bren

Then we move now. Kynes, tell me where the ground still holds.

Kynes

The script is weakest near the gutter and strongest by the stair.

A ripple rolls through the lane. One patch of stone lifts like a breathing hide, then settles, trying to latch onto Kynes's shadow as he shifts his weight.

Nezznar

Nezznar

Your seal is provoking it. Keep it moving, or it will fix on you.

Kynes guides the others along the gutter line, staff low, while the script behind them darkens and seals shut like a closing eye. Ahead, the route to the river terrace clears by a few hard steps, a narrow path through the town's unraveling law.

Stop the Reeve's script from taking the town square

I walk back to the office alone " I might be right back" is all I say over my shoulder

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Escaping the Ink-Black Corruption

Kynes turns back alone, keeping his steps light as the gutter takes his weight. The office window glows behind him, and the inked cobbles shiver but do not leap.

Kynes

Kynes

I might be right back.

Bren slows at the curb, watching him go, while Nezznar freezes in the lane with a hand half-raised, ready to call him back if the street bites.

The Reeve's doorway answers his approach with a faint, hungry pulse. Inside, the desk's old glow has tightened into a sated, watchful throb.

Kynes reaches the threshold and slips inside cleanly, but the floor behind him darkens with a fresh line of script that crawls toward the square.

Nezznar

Nezznar

You have his attention now. If you mean to change anything, do it fast.

The office air tastes of wet ink and old authority. Kynes's return buys him the room, but the cost is immediate, a thin black stain tracking from the door toward the street.

" I kneel and press my Domini seal into the spreading script. Instead of resisting it, I invoke Reeve-Bound Authority and let every strand of the Reeve's claim bind to me at once. In demon tongue I invoke Lex Vorax: The Law Devours Its Author—every magical claim must return its debt, corruption, and consequence to whoever authored it. I use myself as the conduit and reverse the entire network through Soul-Cutter back into the Reeve.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +3)

Escaping the Ink-Black Corruption

Kynes drops to one knee and presses the seal into the crawling script. The black strands stop fleeing, then turn eager, threading into his palm like iron filings finding a magnet.

Kynes

Kynes

Lex Vorax. Let the claim come back to its source.

The office shudders. Through Soul-Cutter, the gathered claim pours backward in a single hard pull, and the desk across the room answers with a violent red pulse.

Kynes

Kynes

By law, the author pays.

The ink-black script tears free of the street and whips into Kynes instead, then vanishes through the bond as if swallowed. The doorway goes blind for a heartbeat, and the spread outside stalls.

Nezznar

Nezznar

That is not just reversal. You have named the Reeve.

A thin, unused side passage appears in the office ledger wall, scratched open by the backlash. Somewhere beyond it, the Reeve's pulse falters, and the square outside holds.
