The Domini saga

The Ledger flares again, blinding and rhythmic, its white pulse snapping over the violet chamber walls in the same geometric burst from before. The pattern is not random. It is a signal, tight and deliberate, aimed through the foundation.

The book’s narrowed glow sharpens into a transmission mark. Lines of light lock onto the seam, then leap outward, as if pinning Kynes’s exact place in the stone for some unseen receiver.

The gears inside the Ledger grind hard enough to shake dust from the wall. Its light stutters, then steadies, as though waiting for a reply from below. The chamber feels suddenly too small, and very awake.

Kynes drives the command through the chamber like a knife, and the shadows at the seam answer at once.

A black tide spills up the wall, swallowing the Ledger’s white flare, crushing the geometric signal flat before it can leap again.

The book spasms, its pages locking shut under the pressure of living dark, then it collapses to the stone in a dead, ink-wet heap.

The chamber settles, but the floor still throbs with that buried pressure, and the cold seam under Kynes hums with his own essence.

Venom lingers in the shadowed edge of the passage, while Bren keeps her blade trained on the stilling book, waiting for Kynes's next call.

Kynes raises his staff, and crimson fire blooms in his palm with a dry, furnace-hot crackle.

The flame lashes down into the seam, drinking the violet pressure and hissing black soot into the air.

Architect script peels loose from the stone like burned paint, curling away in red sparks.

The hidden pulse under the floor stutters, then goes quiet where the fire touches it.

The jagged fissures remain, but the cold sheen inside them dies to bare rock.

At the edge of the passage, Venom’s shadow lifts its head toward the dark below, as if listening to something farther down.

The shadow at the edge of the seam thickens, then peels free of the stone, gathering itself into a low, watchful shape.

Bren straightens a little, blade lowered but not away, her eyes moving from Kynes to the dark passage ahead.

The unconscious Ledger stays where it fell, ink-wet and still, while the red embers in the fissures dim to a stubborn, warning glow.

The seam is quiet now, but the pressure under the stone is not gone.
