The Gatekeeper’s warning hangs in the hearth room, and the outpost seems to answer it. Faces at the benches blur in the firelight, as if the room itself is choosing what to keep.
Kynes studies his shadow hand. The black shape at his wrist catches the light, and the old scar beside it looks suddenly like a seam the room can read.
The Gatekeeper lowers his voice and points toward the empty chamber where Silas vanished. The ash there is already losing its shape, smoothed flat by care and habit.

The Gatekeeper
You haul water, you split wood, you keep your head down. By supper, the yard will have room for your work and not much else.
A pair of traders glance at Kynes, then away. Their eyes slide off his face as though they cannot settle on it, but one of them still remembers the bucket in his hands.

Kynes
They are not just forgetting. They are pruning the record.
Bren shifts closer beside him, tense and ready. The hearth crackles on, while the outpost quietly works to erase what it does not welcome.

“I ask for more ash to clear and keep my hands useful.”
Kynes asks for more ash to clear, keeping his tone plain. The Gatekeeper nods toward the hearth, and the room accepts the request without interest.
Bren shifts aside to give him room. The ward-light holds its weak pulse, and the torn page on the hearthstone lies undisturbed.
“I telekineticlly drag the torn page out and it seems to flutter on the breeze, until it is out of view and it also gets sent to the demon web pits, on my next pass through I use the chant of making to undo any tethers that may have developed snags in the area.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Kynes lifts the torn page with a flick of force, and it peels free from the hearthstone, fluttering once in the room’s weak draft.
The page slips past the bench and the bucket line, then vanishes from the hearth room as if the air itself swallows it.
Kynes steps through the same small motion again, quieter now, and lets the chant of making settle into the floorboards.
Thin snagged threads in the room loosen, unseen ties unhooking from nail, beam, and stone.

The Gatekeeper
There. That feels cleaner.
The weak ward-light steadies, and the charred boards stop answering back.

Bren
Good. Let it forget him.
“Is the outpost forgetting my face?”
NO, AND WORSE (Likely, rolled 94)
The Gatekeeper turns back from the doorway, his eyes lingering on Kynes with a heavy, knowing weight that ignores the clean floorboards.

The Gatekeeper
You have a way of scrubbing the air, traveler, but the tally board keeps its own count. It knows exactly who is standing by the fire, and it is not forgetting you.

Kynes
The ledger is not just a record, it is a tether that refuses to let the ink dry.
“I sweep near the tally board one evening and do a chant of making making it sound whimsical yet also forgettable to undo any tethers on or near the board”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)
“I sweep near the tally board one evening and do a chant of making making it sound whimsical yet also forgettable to undo any tethers on or near the board”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +3)
Kynes sweeps a thin crescent of ash beneath the tally board, almost lazy, almost routine. The broom whisper turns into a soft chant, bright and forgettable, and the violet pulse on the board loosens like a knot giving way.

Kynes
The board is carrying more than ink.
The hidden tether snaps without a sound. A pale thread lifts out of the wood, breaks, and vanishes into the hearth smoke, leaving the tally marks flat and ordinary.

The Gatekeeper
Huh. That is cleaner. The board no longer knows your shape.
The ward-light steadies at once, and the room forgets to flinch around Kynes. On the board, his false name stays put while the old searching shimmer dies away.

The Gatekeeper
Funny little charm. Useful, too. I can work with a man who leaves no hook in the grain.
Bren eases a shoulder from the wall, relief showing only in the slow drop of her blade hand. The torn page on the hearthstone curls black at the edge, then goes still, and the outpost's attention moves on.
