LiveTale

Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is LiveTale?+

LiveTale is a narrative solo role-playing game that simulates one-on-one story sessions with a Game Master. It brings your stories to life by reimagining classic solo RPG systems with the power of advanced AI models. No human GM needed. Just you, your character, and the story.

How does LiveTale's game engine work?+

LiveTale's character creation, action resolution, and dice mechanics come from Fudge. The solo-play structure - oracle questions, scene management, risk-factor pacing, and scene directives - is LiveTale's own original story engine, designed specifically for AI-narrated play. On top of those foundations, LiveTale adds quest tracking, adventure journaling, and AI-powered scene visualization.

Do I need to learn Fudge to play LiveTale?+

No. Familiarity with Fudge is helpful but not required. LiveTale's interface guides you through every step: creating a character, starting an adventure, taking actions, and asking oracle questions. We designed the experience so that anyone can pick it up, whether you're a seasoned solo RPG player or completely new to the hobby.

Is LiveTale affiliated with the creators of Fudge?+

No. LiveTale is an independent, unofficial project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Grey Ghost Press (Fudge). LiveTale uses Fudge mechanics under the Open Game License v1.0a. See our License Notice for full details.

Account & Getting Started

How do I create an account?+

How old do I need to be to use LiveTale?+

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account and use LiveTale.

Gameplay

Why can't I save my character?+

Your character needs at least six skills before you can save. Skills define how your character interacts with the world - every action you take in an adventure is checked against one of them. Head back to the Skills & Stats step and add skills until you have at least six, then save should work. Saving a character also costs 1 Page from your balance; new accounts start with 30 free Pages, so your first few characters are covered.

What are scene quests?+

Scene quests are short-term objectives tied to the current scene - things like "escape the burning warehouse" or "convince the guard to let you pass." They appear in yellow in your quest panel and are expected to be resolved before the scene ends. When all scene quests in a scene are completed, the scene wraps up automatically. Think of them as the immediate problem your character is dealing with right now.

Story quests, by contrast, are long-term goals that span multiple scenes (shown in blue). Scene quests keep individual scenes focused; story quests keep the overall adventure moving forward.

What are story quests?+

Story quests are long-term objectives that span your entire adventure - goals like "find the missing artifact" or "uncover the traitor in the guild." They appear in blue in your quest panel and persist across scenes until resolved. Completing a story quest is a major milestone that can also trigger a scene ending.

Scene quests, by contrast, are short-term objectives (shown in yellow) meant to be resolved within a single scene. Story quests give your adventure its overarching direction; scene quests give each scene its focus.

How does action resolution work?+

When you type an action, the AI GM analyzes it and picks the most relevant skill from your character sheet, along with a difficulty level. Applicable gifts, equipment, and faults are factored in as modifiers. You then roll four Fudge dice (each showing +1, 0, or −1) and add the total to your skill level plus modifiers. If the result meets or exceeds the difficulty, you succeed; fall short and you fail. The current Risk Factor can also shift the difficulty - safer scenes are slightly easier, dangerous ones are harder. The outcome (success, partial, or failure) shapes how the AI narrates what happens next. Each dice roll costs 1 Page.

How does the Oracle question work?+

The Oracle lets you ask yes-or-no questions about the world when you're unsure with narrations and scene images - things like "Is the door locked?" or "Does the shopkeeper recognize me?" Type your question in the Question tab, and the GM assigns odds on a five-level scale: Very Unlikely, Unlikely, Even, Likely, or Very Likely. A d100 is rolled against those odds to produce one of four answers: Exceptional Yes, Yes, No, or Exceptional No. Exceptional results are rarer and signal a more dramatic twist - "Yes, and..." or "No, and..." moments that push the story in unexpected directions. The GM then narrates the outcome based on the result. Each Oracle question costs 1 Page.

What is Risk Factor?+

Risk Factor is a self-balancing tension gauge that tracks how dangerous the current scene feels. It cycles through four levels: Safe, Uncertain, Elevated, and Dangerous. At the end of each scene, Risk Factor shifts based on how many actions you took - three or fewer actions pushes it one step harder, four or more pulls it one step easier. This creates a natural rhythm where quiet scenes build toward danger and action-heavy scenes release the pressure. Risk Factor affects action resolution difficulty (harder checks in dangerous scenes, easier in safe ones) but does not change Oracle question odds. You can see the current Risk Factor displayed in the scene header.

Pages & Pricing

What are Pages?+

Pages are LiveTale's in-game currency. Each Page represents one piece of authored story content - a dice roll, a new scene opening, a freshly created character. The name comes from your Adventure Journal: every Page you spend literally writes a new page into it.

How many Pages do I start with?+

Every new account gets 30 free Pages the moment you sign in with Google. That's enough to create a character and play through about five scenes of light play, or a couple of characters with shorter sessions. No credit card required.

What costs a Page?+
ActionCost
One dice roll (action, combat turn, or Oracle question)1 Page
One scene opening (Scene 1, or transition to the next scene)1 Page
One character creation1 Page
Regenerating an image (portrait or scene art)0.5 Page
What's free?+

A lot of things don't cost Pages - they're handled quietly by the platform. NPC portrait generation, scene summaries written into your journal at the end of each scene, quest reward suggestions, icon mapping for your skills, and AI trait validation during character creation are all on the house. You only pay for the moments where the story is being authored for you.

How do I buy more Pages?+

Two bundles:

  • Adventurer's Passport - 50 Pages for $7.99 ($0.16/Page)
  • Hero's Passport - 110 Pages for $15.99 ($0.145/Page) - best value

Pages from any bundle stack with whatever you already have.

Do Pages expire?+

No. Pages never expire - whether they came from your free signup grant or a purchased Passport. They roll over indefinitely, so you can play at your own pace and come back whenever you like.

What payment methods do you accept?+

All payment methods supported by Stripe (major credit/debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and others depending on your region). All purchases are in US dollars.

Can I get a refund on a Passport?+

No. Page bundles are non-refundable once purchased. Since Pages don't expire, you can use them whenever you return to LiveTale.

What happens when I run out of Pages?+

You'll see a polite stop with a single button to load more Pages. Your current adventure is saved exactly where you left it - no progress is lost. Buy a bundle and you continue from the same beat. You can check your remaining Passport Pages in your account menu anytime.

What happens to my characters and adventures if I stop buying Pages?+

Nothing. Your characters, adventures, and journal stay in your account indefinitely. Sign back in any time, top up Pages, and pick up exactly where you left off. Your data is only deleted if you choose to delete your account.

Technical

What devices can I use to play LiveTale?+

LiveTale is a browser-based game that runs on any modern web browser, including Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Apple Safari, and Firefox. You can play on any desktop, laptop, or mobile device with a supported browser.

AI & Safety

How is LiveTale different from role-playing with ChatGPT?+

LiveTale uses large language models (LLMs) to compose scene narration and analyze your actions, but the plot itself is driven by the game engine - not by free-form AI conversation. Behind the scenes, a rule-based storytelling system acts as a Game Master, managing scenes, risk factor, oracle questions, NPC behavior, and plot twists. The AI writes the story; the engine decides what happens.

Is LiveTale safe for younger players?+

LiveTale requires users to be at least 18 years old. While we do not actively monitor or censor individual gameplay sessions, our AI models are configured with narrative guidelines and content filters designed to avoid inappropriate material. Every generated word and image goes through quality controls. That said, the solo RPG format means players direct their own story - outcomes depend in part on the actions you choose to take.

Can my account be terminated?+

Yes, only when we believe you have violated our Terms of Service or if continued access would harm the service or other users. We reserve the right to suspend or terminate such account at our sole discretion, with or without notice. Terminated accounts may not create new accounts under any name.

Player Safety Filter

What are Lines and Veils?+

Lines and Veils are a player safety feature borrowed from tabletop RPGs. Lines are themes you never want depicted in your stories — they will not appear in narration, dialogue, thoughts, or scene images at all. Veils are themes that may exist in the world but happen off-camera — faded to black or summarized in a single neutral sentence, then moved past, never shown in detail.

You can manage your list from the user dropdown → Player Safety. New accounts start with a small default list covering common sensitivities (graphic violence, sexual content, harm to minors, and a few others) — you can edit, remove, or add entries any time. Each entry has a Line/Veil toggle so you can pick exactly how strictly you want a theme filtered. Your list applies to every adventure and every scene image you generate.

What is the X-Card?+

The X-Card is an in-game safety button (raised-palm icon) on the action bar, just to the left of the Event button. It becomes available once the current story beat has finished narrating and its scene image has loaded, so you can reach for it whenever something you've just read or seen makes you uncomfortable.

Tapping the X-Card opens a short dialog where you pick a reason from a list of common ones (or write your own) and choose whether to add it as a Line or a Veil. Once submitted, the theme is appended to your Player Safety list. The X-Card is forward-only — it does not rewrite the current beat. Instead, the new filter applies to every story beat from the next one onward, so the same theme won't come up again. This mirrors how the X-Card works at a real tabletop: a quick "let's not go there from now on" without forcing the table to rewind.
