The Final Barrier

The mirror wall falls silent behind Kynes and Bren, and the chamber ahead opens like a wound in stone. Ozone stings the air. Far below, the vault groans, slabs shifting as the lattice loses its grip.

At the far end stands the core gate, a circle of black stone veined with pale script. The tether-severing mechanism waits beyond it. House Xar's claimwork still flickers at the seams, trying to knit itself back together.

Bren

Bren

There. That is the last barrier.

Bren steps to Kynes's side, staff tight in hand, eyes fixed on the trembling floor. A crack races through one slab, then another, but the route remains open for now.

Kynes

Kynes

One gate. One chance.

The core gate answers Kynes's blood-mark with a dull pulse. Its script tightens, then loosens, as if deciding whether to admit him or trap him inside. The path to sever House Xar lies straight ahead.

Using Domini House Authority, Domini Seal-Master's Mastery, Mark-Bearer's Sovereignty, Archive-Architect's Insight, House-Xar Exposure Insight, and his unified understanding of Xar architecture, Kynes studies the core gate without activating it, separating the original Domini mechanism from the remaining House Xar claimwork and identifying the gate's intended function and proper method of entry.

The Final Barrier

Kynes sets his staff tip against the cracked stone and lets his sight slide over the gate without touching it. The pale script peels apart in layers, Domini work beneath, Xar graft above.

Kynes

Kynes

The lock is older than the stain on it.

The gate does not open. It recognizes. A hidden seam shows where the original mechanism still waits, and where House Xar has wrapped it in claimwork to force a body through as tribute.

Bren

Bren

He found the shape of it. Now the chamber knows it has been seen.

Kynes traces the seams with a finger and finds the proper entry, a consented turn, not a breach. The core gate wants his mark, then a release, then a steady heartbeat to carry the threshold.

The cost lands at once. A thin crack splits under his boot, and the floor drops a handspan with a harsh stone scream, scattering dust into the blue-white dark.

Bren

Bren

Kynes, now. The floor is failing.

Kynes follows the original Domini entry sequence exactly: presenting his legitimate blood-mark, releasing it when the gate requires, and holding his heartbeat steady as he crosses the threshold, using Mark-Bearer's Sovereignty and Domini House Authority to reject the surrounding Xar claimwork without engaging it.

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Final Barrier

Kynes answers the gate with blood-mark and breath, then withdraws the mark at the seam’s demand. The Domini layer takes the gesture, and the Xar graft shudders without finding purchase.

The black stone turns inward with a dry grind. Pale script unlocks in a clean arc, and the core threshold opens just enough to show cold, deeper darkness beyond.

Kynes

Kynes

Kynes says nothing. He steps through.

He keeps his heartbeat level as he crosses, and the surrounding claimwork slips past him like a failed net. The folded alarm signal stays buried in the stone.

Bren

Bren

It held. Move.

Bren shifts with her staff at the fracture’s edge, eyes hard on the widening floor, while Kynes clears the threshold without giving the Xar work a body to catch.

Behind him, the separated workings flare once, then settle. Ahead, the vault core chamber waits in a colder silence, and the floor groans as another slab gives way.
