The market square tightens like a drawn net. Guards fan out through the wreckage, and every eye tries to find the source of the break.
Under the shattered stall, the relay map still glows in Kynes’s sight, a violet route running straight from the square to the hidden refuge.

Mara
There. The route is exposed. If they close the square, they seal it.

Bren
Kynes, move now. We can still use the breach before they cover it.
A guard captain points toward the wreckage, and two guards begin angling in from the south side of the square.

Kynes
The route is visible through the stall and into the town.
The Soul-Cutter hums in Kynes’s hand, and the dead sparks on the cobbles seem to lean toward the open line.

The Merchant
Too late to hide it now. The refuge is in the open if you know where to look.

Use the exposed route to reach the hidden refuge
“I asorbe the soul of the merchant”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Kynes turns the Soul-Cutter inward and cups The Merchant’s fading breath in the blade’s hollow. The violet route under the stones shivers once, as if it feels the theft.

The Merchant
My face... she warned him.
A thin pale spark lifts from The Merchant’s mouth and vanishes into the dark metal. Her body slackens against the broken counter.
The route flares brighter for a heartbeat, then threads itself toward the hidden refuge. Kynes takes the memory with a sharp strain in his shadow-hand.

Bren
Kynes, behind you.
He has the soul, but the square hears the exchange. Heads turn, and the dead sparks on the cobbles crackle under fresh footsteps.

Mara
Now. Go before they seal it.

“Are the guards still apart of the network”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 52)

Kynes scans the approaching guards, his arcane sight piercing their armor to find the familiar, cold violet pulse of the lattice woven into their very marrow. They are not merely enforcing the law, they are extensions of the network itself, their movements synchronized by the same static rhythm that anchored the merchant stall.

Kynes
They are not just guards, they are nodes.
“"Bren,Mara, you guys know the guards are apart of this too right?" I ask”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Kynes
Bren, Mara, you both know the guards are part of this too, right?

Bren
Bren’s eyes flick to the armored line, then back to Kynes. “I know. I was waiting for you to say it.”

Mara
Mara follows the violet hum under the cobbles, her voice low. “They do not just carry the lattice, they answer it. That is why they move like one body.”

Bren
“So if we strike one, the others feel it,” Bren says, tightening her grip. “Good. That means they can be read, and maybe turned.”

Mara
Mara gives a thin, uneasy smile. “Phandelver hides its seams in plain sight. The guards are only another seam with a face on it.”

Bren
Bren edges closer to Kynes, shoulder brushing his. “Then we do this clean, together. No panic, no wasting a step.”

Mara
“And if the square remembers him,” Mara adds, watching the hum beneath the stones, “we make it remember something else instead.”
“I summon a crow to my arm " do you guys want something to with teeth" I ask with a grin”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)
Kynes lifts his staff and shadows curl tight to his arm. A black crow knits out of that dusk and lands there, claws light as ink.

Kynes
Do you want something with teeth?
Bren’s mouth twitches despite the wreckage. Mara’s eyes cut from the crow to the guards, then back to Kynes, measuring the offer.

Bren
Only if it bites the right people. I like the sound of that better than waiting.

Mara
And if the square remembers your face, give it a better memory to chew on.
The crow settles harder against Kynes’s forearm, head cocked toward the armored line. Under the cobbles, the violet route keeps humming, impatient and visible.

Bren
Then we stop being prey in the open. Pick your moment, Kynes.

Mara
There is a seam in the guard line near the lantern post. If you mean to move, move through that gap.
“I turn my army of Crows into Quasits, flying imp like creatures with teeth.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -2)

Kynes closes his fingers and the crow fractures, not into feathers but into a rush of small horned shapes. The black flock becomes a dozen toothy quasits, wheeling low over the shattered stones.
They dart in a ragged ring between Kynes and the guards, snapping at violet hum and visor slits. The exposed route under the cobbles twitches once, as if recognizing new blood and new wings.

Bren
That is better. Now move.

Mara
Good. They will look up. Go through the seam near the lantern post.
Kynes steps off the broken stall line and follows the gap as the quasits swarm ahead. One guard jerks back, clutching at a helm as the little fiends rake sparks from the lattice in his armor.
The route opens beneath Kynes's boots, violet light running like a split vein through the market stones. The square remembers him anyway, and the air turns sharp with shouted alarm.
A cost lands with the spell, Kynes’s shadow-hand burns cold and thin from the strain, but the quasits have their shape and the way ahead is forced open.
“I grab a guard who is still breathing " show me what I want to know" I look into the lattice and look for an architect”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Kynes clamps a breathing guard by the throat and hauls him into the shattered stall light. The man’s violet-lit helm jerks up, and the lattice in his armor answers with a tense, insectile hum.

Kynes
Show me what I want to know.
Kynes looks through the hum instead of at the man, and the market’s spellwork peels open in his sight. The guard’s borrowed light trails back to an anchor that is not the square, but a pressed seam deeper in the refuge network.
An Architect stands there in the lattice, not flesh in the street, but a recorded presence wearing the shape of command. Cold violet lines gather into a mask of intent, and the route finally reveals its watcher.
The guard chokes out a name through Kynes’s grip. It is Rell, and the name lands like a snapped wire.

Bren
That is the one. Kynes, move. Now.

Mara
We have the opening. Take it before the square seals itself.
Kynes releases the guard and steps through the exposed seam as the route folds inward behind him. The hidden refuge takes shape ahead, and the market’s path back begins to close.
“I walk up to another breathing guard " Rell is the architect" I demand”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Kynes leaves the first guard hanging on the edge of the seam and strides toward another helm in the shattered square. Violet sparks spit under his boots as the crowd recoils, and the route behind him tightens like a closing fist.

Kynes
Rell is the Architect.
The second guard jerks as if struck, and the hum in his armor stutters into a brittle, answering note. Nearby faces turn, but the word takes root faster than fear, and the violet sheen in the cobbles flashes toward the hidden passage.

The Guard
No, I... I heard that name in the seams.

Bren
Then the route is ours. Move, Kynes.

Mara
He knows. The square is losing its grip on us.
Kynes’s demand lands hard. The guard staggers back, and the exposed route folds open just long enough for him to claim it. The market’s pressure breaks, leaving the square behind as the refuge swallows him whole.

“I turn the Quasits back into crows to hide and distort Bren , Mara, and my location and movement”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

Kynes flicks both hands through a tight weave of shadow and fire. The quasits break apart in the air, then fold back into black crows, smaller, quieter, and hard to read.
They spill upward in a ragged ring over Bren and Mara, blotting lantern light and confusing the line of sight between the broken stall and the seam.

Kynes
Hide us.
The crows wheel low and fast, dragging false movement with them. For a breath, the square cannot tell where Kynes ends and the others begin.

Bren
Good. Keep that up, and take us through the noise.

Mara
That blur works, the route is ours if we stay inside it.
Behind them, boots hammer on cobbles and armored voices start calling to one another, but the flock masks the party’s drift into the opening.
The last crow slips through the seam first, and Kynes follows with Bren and Mara tucked inside the moving shadow, their shape lost to the square.
“We leave the market, I find a freash section of lattice, I put my hand up to it." I am coming for you all"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -3)

The seam spits them out into a colder slice of Phandelver, behind a shuttered shed where the market noise comes muffled and thin. Kynes keeps moving, hand still raised toward the hidden weave he has found.

Kynes
I am coming for you all.
His palm finds a fresh section of lattice under the stonework, slick with old violet trace and thin as spider silk.
Kynes presses his hand to it. The thread answers at once, cold and bright, and the contact snaps a sting through his shadow-hand.

Kynes
This is one line of many.

Bren
Good, keep it quiet. I have your back.

Mara
There, that branch is fresh. Follow it before the square catches up.
Above them, the guards’ violet hum tightens into a nearer rhythm, and one armored voice snaps out that the seam has moved.
“I teleport us out of the city”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Kynes snaps the spell wide, and the seam tears open into a thin, spinning fold of dark air. Bren and Mara brace as the shed wall blurs, then the market square vanishes behind them in one cold breath.

Kynes
I am coming for you all.
The three of them spill out beyond the town’s edge, onto damp grass under a low, starless sky. The air here is still, and the violet hum from Phandelver drops away to a distant ache.
Kynes lands in a crouch, staff in hand, with the last sting fading from his shadow-hand. Behind him, the portal collapses to a wrinkle and is gone.

Bren
Good. Keep breathing. We are out.

Mara
That route is cut behind us. They will feel the break, but not the path.
Far off, Phandelver’s square answers with a muffled clatter and a fading violet thrum, but nothing reaches this empty verge. The town is left behind, and the dark field ahead offers only a quiet road or deeper night.
