The Beacon's Betrayal

The floor-runes flare from calm pulse to jagged red strobe. In the center of the chamber, the destroyed watcher post blooms as a ghostly projection, whole again for a heartbeat, and Kynes sees the lie at once.

The post was not a ruin. It was a beacon.

The projection twists, showing gold threads pouring outward from the broken frame, carrying Kynes's exact position into the archive's hidden depths. The truth lands like a blade, sharp and overdue.

Heavy footsteps answer from the tunnels beyond, slow and rhythmic, each impact echoing closer through stone. The chamber seems to hold its breath around Kynes and Bren.

Bren

Bren

That thing was calling them here.

The red strobe paints the smoke in blood-bright bands as the unseen guardians approach, summoned not by chance, but by the blast that was meant to hide the truth.

Mask Kynes's signature from the archive's guardians

I cast sea of shadows, wrap around Bren and flash step the way we came

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +3)

The Beacon's Betrayal

Kynes snaps the sea of shadows outward, and the chamber drinks the dark. It coils around Bren like a cloak, swallowing the red strobe that would have outlined her blade and breath alike.

He steps through the fold of shadow and vanishes with her in one clean flash, the central node dropping behind them in a blink of black silk and broken light.

They reappear in the narrow passage they came from, low to the stone and out of the direct rune-glow, where the air is cooler and the tunnel bends hard left.

Bren

Bren

That should buy us a breath.

Behind them, the red pulse stutters against empty air. Ahead, the dormant seam in the wall gives a faint answering glow, as if the vault still knows Kynes is near.

In Kynes’s hands, the lingering resonance settles instead of spilling, thin as a held note, while the tunnel opens toward darkness that has not yet noticed them.

Bren

Bren

They have not found us yet. Do you want to keep moving, or set a trap for what comes next?

Mask Kynes's signature from the archive's guardians

I keep moving toward the seam

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

The Beacon's Betrayal

Kynes moves first, sliding along the wall instead of the center of the passage. The glow ahead sharpens on the stone seam as he closes the distance.

The lingering resonance in his hands tightens to a thin, steady thread, not spilling, not flaring. The tunnel stays quiet around him.

He reaches the seam and stops with his staff lowered beside it. The line of light runs along the crack like a held breath.

Kynes

Kynes

The seam is active. The warding is listening.

Behind him, the red strobe from the chamber still falters in shadow, while the passage ahead narrows into darker stone and buried pressure.

Bren

Bren

You’re there. Do you want me watching the back, or watching your hands?

“Using Ley-Line Weaver’s Insight and Central Node Attunement, I examine the active seam without feeding energy into it. Is this ward part of the Archive’s artificial network, part of the natural ley-line structure, or something independent of both?”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

The Beacon's Betrayal

Kynes closes his senses over the seam without pouring anything into it. The glow answers with a cold, layered hum, and the warding separates in his mind like threads under a blade.

Kynes

Kynes

Natural stone beneath. Archive stitching over it. Two systems forced to share the same crack.

The line of light is not a lock by itself, but a veil over a deeper flow. Under the ward, ley-lines run true, then bend where someone has pinned Domini script into them like nails.

He catches one more shape in the pattern, a clean break where the ward refuses the archive’s pulse. Something here is independent, old, and not entirely loyal to either side.

Kynes

Kynes

This seam isn’t the Archive’s alone. It is riding on the ley-lines, and something older is holding its own ground.

Bren

Bren

Then we are not just opening a door, we are choosing which power gets to notice us first.

The seam brightens at his inspection, but does not flare. Kynes keeps the resonance tight in his palms, and the ward stays asleep while the hidden network under the floor comes into focus.
