The Hall of Welcome hums over the open service shaft. Gold light leaks up between the boards, and the warm transfer seal lies beside the Ledger like a dare. Bren braces at Kynes's shoulder, eyes fixed on the dark below.

Ledger
Read me. Understand me. End this cleanly, if you can.
The Ledger's red-margin note turns a shade deeper, as if something beneath the hall is reading back. The air tightens around Kynes's shadow-marked hand, and the pulse in the shaft answers him by name.

Bren
If you go down, I go ready. Do not let it take you by surprise.

Kynes
I go down.
Bren shifts aside, one hand on her blade, giving him space and cover at once. The brass index on the floor points straight into the shaft, while the gold glow below flickers with a colder red seam.
From the darkness rises a thin chorus of archive-voice and hungry void, the architects close enough now to feel, not see. Kynes stands at the edge, staff in hand, the shaft waiting like an opened wound.
“"I don't know about you guys but I didn't install a choir downstairs" I say to Bren”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Kynes
I don't know about you guys, but I didn't install a choir downstairs.
The line lands dry in the stale air. Kynes keeps his gaze on the shaft, but the corner of Bren's mouth twitches despite herself.

Bren
Good. If you had, I'd have blamed you for the acoustics too.
Her blade stays low, her voice lighter than her stance. The gold glow below flickers over the boards, and the Ledger's red notes creep another hairline deeper.

Ledger
The voices below are not music. They are indexing. They are calling something by structure, not by name.

Kynes
Not a choir. A mechanism with teeth.

Bren
Then we stop letting it sing at us. Read the next line, Kynes, and tell me what bites first.

Ledger
Not a choir. An indexing process. The line turns below us.

Bren
Then we break the line.

Kynes
I go down clean. If it reaches for me, cut it loose.
Bren set his stance at the shaft edge, blade ready. The Ledger’s pages shivered once, then held still.
Kynes descended into the service shaft and severed his tether to the void-lattice. Below the Hall of Welcome, the architects' order faltered, and the hunger that had been learning his shape went silent. When he rose again, he was himself, and the dark beneath the hall remained only dark.
