The last stake sinks into the damp earth with a muted thud. The hedge ward stands firm around the clearing, and the soil gives up only a stubborn chill.

Kynes feels the ground resist, as if the house’s old foundation still lingers below. Bren brushes dirt from her hands and studies the spot with a quiet, thoughtful frown.

Bren

Bren

It still remembers being held here.

The golden tether between them glows warmer, cutting through the cold in the roots. Bren steps closer to Kynes, her shoulder nearly touching his, and lets the warding silence settle around them.

Bren

Bren

This is better than the road. Better than borrowing rooms, better than watching every door.

Kynes

Kynes

The ward holds. The clearing feels different now, quieter than before.

Bren looks past the hedge to the small dry hollow beyond it, then back to Kynes with a faint, hopeful lift at the corner of her mouth.

Bren

Bren

We can make that bit ours too, if you want.

Are any of my crows around

YES, AND MORE (VeryLikely, rolled 5)

A sudden, rhythmic rustle of feathers breaks the silence of the clearing. From the canopy of the mossy oaks, a dozen shadow-crows descend in a swirling, ink-black cloud, landing on the hedge ward and the surrounding branches.

Bren

Bren

They found us, Kynes. It seems they never really left.

Kynes

Kynes

More than just scouts. They are tethered to the clearing now.

I checked them to see if 1) they're still under my control and 2) if they have any foreign teathers attached to them

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

Kynes draws the shadow-crows into a tighter circle above his palm. Their black forms still to his call, but each one carries a thin violet snag that does not belong to his weave.

Kynes

Kynes

They answer me. The foreign thread is on them, not in them.

He lets arcane sight slip through the flock, and the tether-lines show plain, a few clean and golden, the rest knotted with stray market-like residue that fades at his touch.

One crow jerks midair, as if something distant tugs its shadow, and a sliver of Kynes's focus burns off into the check.

Bren

Bren

Well?

Kynes cuts the last false strand free. The flock settles at once on the hedge and branches, obedient again, while the dead twine at the clearing edge lies unchanged in the dust.

The birds are under his hand, but they are only watchers and messengers, not lumber or stone. Bren watches the crows and then the empty ground, waiting for Kynes to say whether the clearing is safe enough to use.

The crows are clear now of teathers that are not of my own design

NO (Likely, rolled 77)

Kynes watches the crows, but a faint, persistent violet shimmer still clings to their wings, refusing to be unraveled by his touch. The tether remains imperfect, and the clearing does not yet feel entirely his own.

I unravel the teather strand by strand

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

A Clearing Made Hers

Bren

Kynes threads his magic into the stubborn violet glimmer, and the crows shiver in place. One by one, the false strands loosen from their wings, peeling away like wet thread from wool.

Kynes

Kynes

The residue is woven into them, not around them.

The last stray filament slips free and burns out in the air. The flock settles cleanly on the hedge, their shadows dark again, their tether-lines now steady gold.

Bren

Bren

That is better. They are ours now, or close enough.

A deeper pulse answers beneath the warded ground. The ash by the roots stirs, and the clearing seems to remember hands, feet, and old labor pressed into it long before them.

A buried seam shows itself in the damp soil, not a pit or a trap, but the trace of a hidden cache. Its lid sits sealed under the ward, waiting for whatever Kynes has just made possible.

Bren

Bren

There is something under there, and it is reacting to your work.

✓ Quest Accepted

Secure the hidden cache beneath the clearing

Are the crows now free of foreign teathers

YES, BUT (VeryLikely, rolled 83)

The crows are indeed free of the Architect's reach, but the clearing itself demands a price for its silence. As the golden tether pulses, the ground beneath the cache begins to draw warmth from Kynes, leaving his shadow-hand cold and the soil beneath him brittle.

I open the cashe

Kynes pries the cache open, and the brittle lid gives at once. Inside lies only a dust-dry bundle of twine, oilcloth, and a single buried memory-mark, all of it cold as winter ash.

The clearing accepts the opening, but not for free, the golden tether to Bren steadies while something small and personal slips loose, as if the ground has taken its due and gone still.

What was taken

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

A Clearing Made Hers

Bren

Kynes draws the memory-mark free of the cache. It is no scrap, but a worked sliver of old seal-stone, cold enough to sting through his fingers.

Kynes

Kynes

A memory-mark, made to be held and returned.

Bren straightens at his side, her breath catching as the clearing answers with a soft, inward hush. The brittle soil around the opening stops cracking.

Bren

Bren

That is not storage. That is a claim.

Kynes turns the seal-stone over. Faint lines of twine and oilcloth are worked into it, a private sign, not a ward. The cache is empty now except for the bundle in his hand.

Bren

Bren

If they hid this here, they meant the place to remember someone.

The golden tether between them steadies, then gives a small answering pulse. Beneath the hedge, the second pocket of silence deepens, as if the clearing has accepted what was taken and what was found.
