The passage falls quiet at last. Violet light breathes from the walls, and dust settles in slow threads between Kynes, Bren, the ledger, and the glass key.
Bren eases down against the stone, one hand over her ribs, the other still resting near the ledger. Her breathing steadies, though her eyes keep flicking to Kynes as if checking he is still real.

Bren
Well. That went cleaner than I expected. I am alive, which is a pleasant surprise.

Bren
Your turn, Kynes. What do we do with the ledger, and who keeps the key?

Kynes
The lock is shut. The room is safe, for the moment.
The silence lengthens, but it no longer feels like a trap. Bren watches him with tired patience, ready to hear whatever answer he gives.
“I kiss her forehead, "come my little shadow asp, we'll figure it out together"”

Kynes steps in close and tips Bren’s chin with two fingers, then presses a brief kiss to her forehead. The violet glow catches the edge of his staff as he lowers it, keeping his touch careful and steady.

Kynes
Come, my little shadow asp. We will figure it out together.

Bren
Her shoulders loosen at once, and a small, tired smile breaks through the strain.

Bren
Together, then. That is better than being brave alone.
Bren shifts the ledger into one arm and turns it slightly toward him. A ribbon of dust slips from the cover, and a dark seam of ink along the edge catches the light.

Bren
The last page is not sealed. It is waiting for a mark, or a choice.
She looks from the ledger to the glass key in Kynes’s hand, then back to his face, hopeful and wary all at once.

“Let's be done with the tower,. Besides I know of a place we might be able to seal it away.”
