The ridge ends in a wind-cut shelf of stone. Kynes and Bren walk until Phandelver is only memory, and even their old paths feel чужие, far behind them. The cairns ahead mute the world’s hum.

Venom lingers near the rocks, quiet and watchful. Its shadow slips first, then the others do, tugging at the snow dust as if the pass is trying to remember them.

Kynes

Kynes

The cairns are dampening the magic. The shadows are not.

Bren slows beside Kynes, gaze moving over the stones and the empty slope beyond. The silence is real here, but it feels borrowed.

Bren

Bren

This place does not know us. That is almost a relief.

For a moment, Kynes can feel how the surface might hold him, not as a drow relic, but as a stranger with no script attached. Then the nearest shadow bends toward the cairns, curious and deliberate, and the silence seems to wait for his answer.

Learn whether the cairns are a safe refuge from the shadows

I step toward the nearest cairn and press my palm to the stone to test its resistance.

Kynes steps in and lays his palm flat on the nearest cairn. Cold grit bites his skin, then the stone gives under pressure, not soft, but responsive, as if it accepts the test.

Kynes

Kynes

The stone is hollowed by seams, not broken by weather.

A thin crack of dark light threads across the cairn’s face beneath his hand. It is not a wound, but a hidden join, and the shadows around it twitch toward the same line.

Bren

Bren

That is not ordinary stacking. Someone made these to hold something in.

Venom shifts above the snow, its shadow lagging a beat behind, then sliding the wrong way. The nearest cairn answers with a faint, inward pull, and a seam opens just wide enough for a breath of stale air.

Venom

Venom

This ridge is listening. Your touch has found a channel.

The faint strand of light at Kynes’s chest dims further, but the exposed seam wakes the cairns in sequence. Their old stones begin to mark a path through the pass, as if the silence itself has been named.

I press my palm to the next cairn

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +0)

The Silent Ridge and the Shadow
Bren
Bren

Kynes slides to the next cairn and lays his palm to the cold stone. The seam under his hand answers at once, opening in a clean dark line.

Kynes

Kynes

It is keyed the same way.

The nearest glow jumps to that cairn, then another behind it. The ridge is not marking a trail for travelers, it is passing along a signal.

Bren

Bren

These are linked. Whatever wakes one, wakes the rest.

Venom drifts higher, its shadow sliding sideways across the snow, as if the dark itself is trying to listen more closely. The cairns ahead answer with a faint, steady pulse.

Venom

Venom

It is not shelter. It is a relay.

Cold dread settles in the open air. The glowing line now runs beyond sight, into the pass, and the shadows bend toward it like iron filings toward a magnet.

Nope..we keep walking

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Kynes does not stop. He lowers his hand from the stone and keeps walking between the cairns, staff set to take his weight on the hard snow. The glowing seams stay behind him, but the ridge holds their light in its bones.

The channel answers anyway. A thin strand of light runs along the cairn line at his back, and the shadows bend after it, dragged long and sharp across the pass.

Venom

Venom

That mark is not fading. It is calling.

Bren tightens her pace to match his, one hand hovering near her blade as she watches the dark tilt toward them. Snow scrapes underfoot, loud in the hush.

Bren

Bren

We keep moving, but this is not quiet. Something has our shape now.

Kynes clears the last visible cairn. A cold sting bites his palm where the old bind had been, and a few sparks of violet dust shake free into the wind.

Ahead, the pass opens into a dark notch of stone, empty enough to hide in, or to be seen from. Behind them, the cairn line keeps glowing like a drawn breath that will not leave.
