The Observatory's Crimson Pulse

Kynes and Bren step out onto the cliffs, salt wind cutting hard across their faces. Below, the sea hammers the rocks. Ahead, the crumbling observatory throbs with faint crimson light, still fed from somewhere deeper in the coast.

Bren

Bren

That glow is not dead. It is still pulling.

A cracked seam runs through the path behind them. Inside the tunnel mouth, stone answers with a low groan. The severed latch has not ended the collapse, it has only cut the anchor loose.

Kynes

Kynes

The observatory mirrors the tunnel lattice. The source is above, and the coast is feeding it.

A spray of loose rock sloughs from the observatory wall. The crimson pulse steadies, then deepens, like a heartbeat finding a new vein. If Kynes leaves it untouched, the coastal line keeps drawing power.

Bren

Bren

Then we go in, before the tunnels drop out from under us.

Kynes faces the observatory, the broken tunnel at his back and the living latch ahead. The path is clear now, sever the coastal source or be buried by what it keeps waking.

✓ Quest Accepted

Sever the coastal source

I channel my void-signature into the ground to stabilize the path before we enter.

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Observatory's Crimson Pulse

Kynes kneels and presses his staff to the cracked stone. His void-signature threads downward in a thin, controlled spill, and the shattered path answers with a dull gold-red glow.

The fracture lines knit together just enough to hold weight. Loose grit stops sliding, and the air above the path steadies as if something old has been told to wait.

Beneath the cliff, the buried lattice hums back through him, not resisting, but recognizing the shape of his mark.

Bren

Bren

He can make it listen.

The observatory’s crimson pulse shifts. For a breath, the light runs along its lower stones and catches on a half-buried ring of carved Domini script at the base.

Kynes feels the mechanism at last, a relay sink tucked under the front threshold, drinking from the coast and feeding the glow above.

Bren

Bren

There. That is the throat of it. If you want the source, that is where it is.

I cast a healing spell on myself

SUCCESS (Good Health, rolled +0)

The Observatory's Crimson Pulse

Kynes answers with a low chant and draws heat into his own wounds. The red pulse under his palm dims, then loosens, as if the seal finally gives him a narrow mercy.

A soft arcane sheen passes over his hands and throat. The old strain in his posture eases, and the brittle ache of the tether settles back to a distant throb.

Kynes

Kynes

The drain is still there, but lighter.

Bren watches the change in silence, her shoulders dropping a fraction as the cliff wind tugs at her cloak. Her gaze moves from his palm to the crimson-lit threshold below.

Bren

Bren

Better. Now you can look at it without it looking through you.

The buried relay keeps glowing under the observatory lip, steady and patient, a vein of Domini script half-swallowed by stone. The light above it answers in the same measured beat.

Bren

Bren

If that is the throat, then the mechanism is below the floor, not above the roof. Do you want to pry it open, or read it first?

I read the relay before touching it

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +2)

The Observatory's Crimson Pulse

Kynes bends over the threshold and lets the relay’s rhythm settle into his sight. The Domini script is not a warning mark, but a layered instruction, a latch wrapped around a deeper lock.

Kynes

Kynes

It is a valve. Not a wall.

The crimson pulse answers his reading in beats he can count, each flare feeding into a second pattern buried under the first. The visible relay carries the pressure, but the true mechanism waits below the floorstone.

Bren shifts closer, keeping her eyes on the seam and then on Kynes’s hand. Her stance says she trusts the answer more than the place.

Bren

Bren

There. The script is telling us where it breathes.

Kynes traces the hidden cadence with one finger in the air, and the pattern resolves into a buried assembly, relay above, intake below, something old and hungry chained to both.

Bren

Bren

So now we know what opens it. Do you want the floor, or do you want me watching that threshold?

I peel back the floor stone, as I tell Bren to watch the threshold

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +0)

The Observatory's Crimson Pulse
Kynes

Kynes

Watch the threshold.

Kynes plants the tip of his staff and pries at the floorstone. The seam gives with a dry grind, then lifts in one heavy slab.

Crimson light wells up from beneath, washing his hands and the stone in a deeper glow. The relay is no single lock, but a layered throat, a compact mechanism nested under the threshold.

Dust spills into the opening. The floor under the observatory pulses once, as if the hidden assembly notices the air.

Bren

Bren

I have it. Go on.

Bren shifts to the edge of the breach, shoulders squared toward the seam, watching the red pulse above while Kynes exposes the darker machinery below.

Under the stone, the mechanism resolves into a blood-wet lattice of Domini craft, fed by a deeper chamber that still hums with stored force.

✓ Quest Accepted

Open the layered relay beneath the threshold

I pry deeper into the relay throat

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -3)

Kynes drives the staff tip into the blood-wet lattice and pries. The throat gives with a wet metallic snap, and the inner ring shifts under his weight.

The opening widens. Beneath the threshold, he finds a nested brace of Domini script around a seam of red glass, each layer feeding the one below.

Kynes

Kynes

It is a lock stack, not a single lock.

The crimson pulse jumps through his palm scar as the lower mechanism shows itself, and a shred of vellum in his pouch blackens at the edge.

Bren leans in, then freezes as fine needles of light crawl across the exposed frame. The floor answers with a harder thrumming.

Bren

Bren

There, Kynes. That lower brace is the heart of it. Something below is still feeding this.

The pry succeeds, but the cost lands at once, a hot sting lines his knuckles where the lattice bites back, and the red-lit cavity yawns wider, waiting.
