Kynes keeps the messenger locked in place with an unseen grip, the wind snapping at cloaks and boots on the exposed mountain path.

The Messenger
Wait. Please. I can trade. Take what is in my satchel, and let me go away from this tower.
The messenger goes still, swallowing hard as fear overtakes his struggle. He stares at Kynes, then at Bren, as if the crags might answer for him.

Bren
He is done running. If he has something useful, let him put it on the stone.
The satchel looks heavier than travel scraps should be.
Bren holds her ground a few paces back, one hand near her blade, eyes scanning the broken ridge while the messenger waits for Kynes to decide.
“What are the contents of the bag”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Kynes lets the hidden grip slacken just enough for the satchel to sag. The messenger freezes, then fumbles the flap open with shaking fingers.
Inside are folded letters wrapped in oilcloth, a thin strip of red cord, and a small token stamped with a spider sigil. No coin. No provisions.

Kynes
Nezznar’s mark.

The Messenger
That is all I carry, I swear it. Messages, and proof for the one who sent me. Let me live, and you can keep them.

Bren
The token matters more than the words. Open the letters here, and if there is poison in them, we see it first.
A hard gust skims the path, snapping the oilcloth loose in Kynes’s hand. Beneath the wrap, one seal bears a fresh smear of dark wax.
Bren steps closer, eyes on the seal, while the messenger swallows and waits for Kynes to choose the next move.
“I open them one by one and read the messages to see what they contain”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Kynes draws the first letter free and lets his magic tease the fold open without breaking the seal further. The ink stirs, then settles into a clear hand as he reads.

The Messenger
Not that one... please, not that one.
He opens the second, then the third. Each message is brief, clipped, and sealed for speed. One names a meeting road south of the village. One reports a watcher near the old towers. One bears a single instruction, wait for the black net to be ready.

Bren
That is coordination. Not a random courier, then.
Under the last fold, Kynes finds a narrow scrap pressed flat against the oilcloth, a hand sketch of the ruins above the path. A side chamber is marked with the same spider sigil.

The Messenger
I only carry them. I do not know what the net is.
The wind claws at the exposed ridge as Kynes finishes reading. Bren angles her body between him and the drop, ready for movement, while the messenger stares at the papers in Kynes's hands, waiting for judgment.
“" so Bren dear, what should we do with him"”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +1)

Kynes
So, Bren dear, what should we do with him?

Bren
First, we stop him shaking himself apart. Then we decide if he walks, talks, or runs.

The Messenger
Runs. I would choose runs.
Bren keeps her eyes on the messenger, but her voice stays level, almost practical. The wind snaps the loose letters between Kynes's fingers.

Bren
If he is tied to Nezznar, I want names, roads, and who else is watching this path.

The Messenger
I can give names. Not all of them. Enough to live through the night.
The messenger swallows hard, then glances once at Kynes's staff and once at the spider-marked scrap, as if both might judge him.

Bren
Kynes, let him speak, or send him off. I will follow your lead.
“Looks over the edge of the ridge down. " Define send him off" he smirks more to scare the messenger. " Send him on his way or fling him off the cliff"”
SUCCESS (Fair Intimidation, rolled -1)

Kynes lets his gaze drop past the ridge, then back to the messenger with a thin, mean little smile.

Kynes
Define send him off. Send him on his way, or fling him off the cliff.

The Messenger
On his way. Please.
The messenger jerks his eyes toward the drop and goes pale beneath the moonlight. Bren’s mouth tightens, but she says nothing.

Bren
Then he talks first. Names, roads, watchers. After that, we see whether he walks.

The Messenger
I know one watcher. A horned mark on his glove. He meets them below, near the broken stair.
The wind worries at the open letters, snapping them against Kynes’s hands while the messenger keeps staring at the edge he has been shown.

Bren
There. That is useful. And you, Kynes, are you satisfied enough to let him breathe?
“" for now." He looks from the kid to Bren, then back to the kid. " Your free to go, however" I cast mind wipe on the kid and he loses the last 40 minutes”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Kynes lifts a hand and speaks the words flatly, the spell landing like frost over a candle flame. The messenger blinks once, then twice, confusion replacing terror.

Kynes
For now. You are free to go.
He looks from the messenger to Bren, then back again, and the last forty minutes vanish from the man’s face as if swept clean by rain.

The Messenger
What was I saying...?
His shoulders loosen. The spider token hangs forgotten at his belt, and his frightened stare turns dull, uncertain.

Bren
That is cleaner than chains. But he will remember nothing of this stretch, will he?
The wind snaps the letters harder now, one sheet skittering across the rock between them. The messenger takes an unsteady step away from the edge, already half lost to the spell.
“"he won't have a clue. Let's head to the meeting spot.". He holds up the note describing where to meet”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)
