The Hidden Black Arch

Kynes and Bren climb over the fresh black-stone slide and drop into a narrow ravine beyond it. Morning light slants in pale and cold, and the valley silence follows them like a held breath. The southern trail is gone behind the stacked debris.

Ahead, the ravine opens into a hidden stone shelf with a half-buried arch cut from the same black rock. Frost rims the edges, but the arch is dry, and a faint warm draft slips from within.

Kynes

Kynes

The stone is placed, not fallen.

Bren steps beside Kynes, blade low, scanning the arch and the silent slopes above. Her shoulders stay tense, but she keeps close, ready to follow if he goes in.

Bren

Bren

This is not a trail. It is a choice someone made for us.

Kynes reaches the black arch and finds a shallow seam in the stone, just wide enough for a hand. The warm draft deepens, carrying the scent of old dust and buried water. Beyond the opening, the path bends down into darkness.

✓ Quest Accepted

Clear the debris

I point to the debris blocking our path.." love do you want to go that way?"

Kynes points past the arch at the broken stone and the buried trail behind them, then lets the question hang in the cold air. Bren looks where he points, then back to him, her grip easing a fraction as the draft breathes from the dark.

Bren

Bren

Not that way. If it is safer, I want to hear why from you first.

The faint warmth from the arch brushes their sleeves, while the valley stays stripped and still around them. Bren shifts closer, waiting for Kynes to lead, but not forcing the choice.

I telekineticlly move the rocks out of your path

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

The Hidden Black Arch
Bren
Bren

Kynes lifts one hand, and the broken stones nearest Bren shiver free of the drift. They slide aside in a low scrape, clearing a narrow footpath along the shelf.

The warm draft from the arch slips over the newly opened path, touching Bren’s boots first. Frost dust spills from the cleared edge and settles in the shallow hollow beyond.

Kynes

Kynes

The way is open now.

Bren

Bren

That helps. I can take that route.

Bren lowers her blade a fraction and studies the gap Kynes has made, her shoulders easing while her gaze stays alert.

Bren

Bren

If we use the arch, say so. If not, show me the other way.

Morning light thins along the shutter seam behind them, and the black arch breathes on, waiting. The shelf now offers a clear start, but the choice of which route they trust still hangs between them.

Quest Complete

Clear the debris

I sense the arch for anything

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -3)

Kynes closes his eyes and lets the arch answer his attention. The warm draft carries more than heat, a buried stone seam, old dust, and the faintest trace of cold water trapped deeper under the shelf.

Kynes

Kynes

The arch is hollow behind the face.

A thin pressure brushes his senses, like a door not quite shut. The feeling is calm, but it is not empty.

Something in the black stone bears a deliberate binding, old and careful, and it drinks the draft instead of making it.

Kynes catches one sharper note beneath the warmth, a hidden seam that would open only from this side. The effort costs him a quiet sting of strain behind the eyes, and the dust at the arch’s lip trembles in response.

Bren glances from the seam to Kynes’s face, waiting for his answer. The shelf stays clear, but the choice now has shape, the arch is safe enough to trust, and the other route still drops into unlit stone.

I do the same with the path I just cleared the landside away

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -1)

Kynes turns from the arch and studies the cleared landside path with the same quiet care. The stones there are dry, packed, and free of loose collapse, a narrow route that holds without complaint.

Kynes

Kynes

This side takes weight.

He shifts one boot onto it and confirms the shelf does not sag. The path runs clean along the ravine wall, away from the unlit drop.

Beneath the frost, a faint seam of old tooling shows where the stone was cut and later left alone. It is not the way the pass has been wearing down.

Bren

Bren

So this is the safer line.

Kynes sets the staff forward and looks along the landside route until it bends into a shallow nook of stone. The opening there is still dark, but it is a place to stop without exposing themselves to the drop.

Bren

Bren

Then we take it, and keep the arch behind us.

Choose whether to take the landside path or the black arch
