The Hall of Welcome is warm, low-lit, and almost ordinary. Firelight licks the hearthstones while the far-off pulse of the archive stays buried under thick walls and patient silence.

Kynes studies the violet dust on his hand, turning his wrist in the fireglow. The powder looks dull now, less like a wound and more like a stain that refuses to admit what it was.

Bren

Bren

You are still here. That is something.

Bren sits by the hearth, one knee drawn up, watching him with tired relief. Sable waits near the wall, still as a carved oath, while the Ledger rests nearby, quiet and attentive.

Ledger

Ledger

This room holds more truth than the vault ever did.

The dust is fading. The house is quieter with you in it.

The fire pops softly. Outside, Phandelver keeps its evening watch, but inside the hall there is only breath, emberlight, and the slow easing of shoulders that have carried too much.

Kynes lowers his scorched hand to the open Ledger and lays it flat on the page. Violet dust smears the margin as the book gives a soft, answering glow.

Show us, then. Not the record they wanted, the one that remained.

The hearthlight bends across the paper. Lines of archive-script rise in pale threads, and a second image forms beside them, not a map, but two figures in a cramped workroom.

Bren

Bren

That was us. You were always the one reading the room before anyone spoke.

The projection shifts. Bren, younger and harsher at the edges, stands between Kynes and a clerk’s bench, one hand half-raised to block a question, the other hiding a stolen key.

Bren

Bren

He remembers the danger first. I remember the cover he gave me.

Another page flashes. Kynes and Bren share a narrow stairwell, shoulders nearly touching, watching the archive search below while the words between them go unspoken.

Ledger

Ledger

You were shelter to each other, before either of you admitted it.

Bren looks from the vision to Kynes, relief and old hurt crossing her face together. The Ledger’s glow settles into a quiet, steady line, holding the moment open.
