The mill house clings to them even out here. A scrap of oilcloth tumbles past Kynes’s boot, then a length of twine, both damp with familiar hearth-smoke.

It is carrying traces of us.

Bren

Kynes, look. It is not just following. It is marking the road behind us.

Ahead, the desolate ground offers no hedge, no stone, no shelter. The pressure of being named tightens, as if the house is trying to fit them into its own memory.

If it keeps our scraps, it keeps our trail. If it keeps the trail, it can reach Rell through it.

The meaning snaps into place, sharp as a drawn blade. The house is not only recording them, it is using their cast-off traces to pull on the hidden lattice that still binds Rell.

Bren tightens her grip on Kynes’s hand, eyes fixed on the drifting twine. The next move is no longer escape, but breaking the line the mill house uses to remember and command.

I take Bren's hand and move south, away from the trail.

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -2)

Kynes closes his fingers around Bren’s hand and guides her south, putting the scraps and their trail behind them. The road opens ahead in bare grey stretches, and the wind takes the oilcloth smell with it.

They gain a few steady paces before the last lengths of twine drag to a stop and slacken in the dust. The house’s pull thins at once, but a faint tug still lingers in the ground behind their heels.

Bren

That is better. It still knows where we were, but it is losing the shape of us.

Kynes keeps moving with her, and the old pressure loosens enough for the road to feel like theirs again. A single damp thread tears free from the twine and skitters back toward the mill house side of the wind.

The trace is fading, but not gone.

Bren glances over her shoulder, then squeezes his hand once more and stays at his side. Behind them, the scattered scraps no longer gather, only lie in the road as dead sign.

We keep south, then. If it wants the rest of our road, it has to come farther than this.
