Respite on the Narrow Ledge

Kynes and Bren settle onto a narrow dry ledge, the stone cool beneath them. Behind, the vault’s collapse thuds on, distant now, like a storm trapped under earth.

Kynes lets his staff rest across his knees. Dust clings to his hair and sleeves, and the severed air around them feels almost gentle after the chamber’s strain.

Bren

Bren

We made it out of the worst of it. That counts for something.

Bren

Bren

Her shoulders ease, but her eyes stay on Kynes, measuring the cost he is carrying.

Kynes

Kynes

The vault is still settling. For now, the ledge holds.

Bren shifts closer, her voice lower now, steadier. The red glow of danger is gone, leaving only stone, breath, and the long road ahead.

Bren

Bren

You do not have to answer all of it at once. Just tell me what hurts most, or tell me nothing. I can stay here either way.

I sit down a moment, pull her down to sit next to me, and plop my head next to hers." Just stay and enjoy that nothing is try to kill us for five minutes"

SUCCESS (Great Health, rolled -1)

Respite on the Narrow Ledge

Kynes eases down beside Bren, close enough that their shoulders touch. The ledge takes both of their weight and keeps its silence.

He pulls her in with one arm, then lets his head rest against hers. Dust shifts off his hair and onto the stone.

Bren

Bren

Five minutes is a luxury in a place like this.

Bren

Bren

Then we take them. Together.

The vibration through the passage stays low and distant, a warning with no teeth for the moment. The blank book in Kynes’s lap gives off a faint violet saturation, quiet as a bruised glow.

Bren

Bren

The vault can wait. I am here.

Kynes

Kynes

The stone is holding. So is she.

For a few breaths, neither of them moves. The sealed ruin behind them remains buried, and the narrow ledge feels almost like a room.

I tell Bren we keep going together

SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Respite on the Narrow Ledge

Kynes straightens first, the rest gone from his shoulders in one careful motion. He keeps his hand near the blank book, but his eyes stay on Bren.

Kynes

Kynes

We keep going. Together.

Bren

Bren

Good. I was not planning to let you vanish into some vault trick alone.

Bren shifts closer on the ledge and taps two fingers against his wrist, steady and certain. The low vibration under the stone answers with a dull murmur, then settles again.

Bren

Bren

If the passage wants to swallow us, it can try. I am still here.

Kynes

Kynes

The ledge holds. So does she.

Kynes closes his fingers around the staff and rises with Bren beside him. The blank book in his lap gives off that faint violet saturation as they turn toward the dark stretch ahead.

Bren

Bren

Then move, Kynes. I will match your step.

I press deeper into the passage with Bren

SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Respite on the Narrow Ledge

Kynes moves first, and Bren matches him without a word. The narrow ledge gives underfoot only a dry grit of stone, while the passage ahead swallows their light.

The low vibration travels through the wall and into Kynes’s staff, a steady warning that never quite becomes a threat. Above them, the sealed collapse stays shut.

Bren glances once at Kynes, then at the dark slope beyond, her pace tightening to his. She does not ask if he is ready, she simply keeps step.

Kynes

Kynes

The passage is still holding together.

The blank book in Kynes’s grasp gives off its faint violet saturation, dim but stubborn, as if it remembers the seal it just survived.

Bren

Bren

If this tunnel wants another trick, let it show itself farther ahead.

They press deeper together, shoulder to shoulder, and the dark bend ahead opens enough to take them both. Behind them, the ledge remains empty.
