The slanted passage tilts into darkness, and the old hunt finds Kynes again. Ahead, a thin seam of red light crawls over the stone, not from the vault, but from something following his severed trail. Bren stops beside him, staff ready, eyes fixed on the bend.

Bren
It found us. Tell me what you want to do, Kynes.
The light sharpens into a glyph-laced face in the wall, a House Xar sinkpoint relay trying to rehook itself to his blood. Behind it, the passage shudders as if the vault itself is listening.

Kynes
The tether is gone. This is only the echo.
Bren steps half in front of him, braced for impact, but she does not take the choice from him. The seal on Kynes's palm answers with a low violet pulse, steady and mine now, as the red glyphs begin to fracture.

Bren
If you break it here, it cannot chase Phandelver again.
The relay swells once, reaching, searching for a command signature that no longer owns him. The passage narrows around them, tense as a held breath, while the dark bend beyond remains open and waiting.
Kynes leaves Slanted passage behind and arrives at Phandelver.
“I seal the wall and go home”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled -1)

Phandelver takes him in with cold air and lantern gold, the square held in a wary hush. Kynes closes the last of the distance with one clean motion, and the red seam he carried here is gone from the stone as if it never had a grip at all.
The town’s attention shifts at once, but nothing leaps forward. Faces stay guarded, hands stay busy, and the tension loosens into uncertain breathing instead of panic.

Bren
It is sealed. Good. Let them stare at an ordinary wall for once.
Kynes’s palm gives off one last violet throb, then settles. The blank book in his gear keeps its strange, saturated weight, and the old pressure in the square loses its teeth.

Bren
That trail is dead now. House Xar does not get to follow you home.
The clay cup on the nearby table stands braced and intact, a small thing made stubborn by care. Around it, the town remains tense, but the fear has nowhere left to run.
Kynes leaves Phandelver with the square behind him, not hunted, not chased, just watched. The night keeps its distance.

The relay guttered, then went still in Kynes’s hands.

Kynes
It was only an echo. Enough to follow, not enough to hold.

Bren
Then let it stay buried. We are not taking that shadow with us.
Bren’s posture eased as the square around them loosened its breath.
Kynes left the square with no House Xar thread on his blood, only the weight of what he had carried and the hard earned freedom to carry it himself. The town settled behind him, quieter for the breaking of the tether. He was still watched by the world, but no longer hunted by that hand.
