The Void Signal Awakens

Wind claws the cliff edge as Kynes, Bren, and Mara reach the first sinkpoint. Gold veins pulse under the stone, faint but steady, like a listening heartbeat.

Bren takes the outer ledge, staff low and eyes sweeping the mist. Mara crouches by the rune scar, one hand raised in warning. No one speaks. They are waiting for the coast to answer.

Kynes

Kynes

The lattice is reading him already. If he feeds it wrong, House Xar will know.

Kynes plants his staff and draws the void inward. The mark in his palm darkens, then answers the sinkpoint with a cold pulse that makes the gold veins shiver.

The cliff rune flares bright enough to sting the eyes. Far below, a thin chain of light races along the hidden line toward the coast, carrying Kynes's corruption straight into the network.

Bren

Bren

Move, now. Someone just felt that.

Mara turns sharply toward the inland fog, where a distant answering glimmer blinks once, like a watcher opening its eye. The surge has begun, and so has the hunt.

✓ Quest Accepted

Hide the cliff scar from House Xar

In one motion I take Bren's sword I blessed, I cut the hand that is marked off and leave it on the sink point, I them cast sea of shadows and regrow my hand back.

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Void Signal Awakens

Kynes cuts clean through the marked hand and drops it onto the sinkpoint rune. Gold light crawls over the severed flesh, then drinks it in as if it were named cargo.

Shadow boils out from the stump in a dark, seawide surge. It wraps the wound, knits bone and skin, and seals his arm whole again before the blood can spill far.

The rune answers with a sharp pulse. The cliff face does not go dark, it remembers. A thin, permanent scar of gold remains burned into the stone where the hand landed.

Far inland, the answering watcher-glimmer steadies instead of vanishing. The signal has lost its clean line, but not its hunger.

Bren

Bren

That works. It also marks the cliff for anyone looking hard enough.

Mara

Mara

The line is broken, but the scar is speaking back. House Xar will hear the wound before they see the place.

Wind tears over the ledge as the three of them stare at the glowing stain in the rock, and the new silence feels watched.

“Using Xar-Watcher’s Bane, Ley-Line Conduit Mastery, Archive-Severing Arcane Insight and Mark-Bearer’s Sovereignty, I examine the scar without touching it. Is the scar still transmitting my identity, or is it now only transmitting the severed mark’s last known signature?”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +1)

The Void Signal Awakens

Kynes angles his gaze over the scar without reaching for it. The gold line does not bloom toward his hand, it stays fixed to the stone, thin and stubborn, like a stitch that has finished the job and gone cold.

Kynes

Kynes

It is not holding me anymore. It is holding the shape it learned from me.

A second thread flickers beneath the first, fainter and rougher. It matches the severed mark's last pulse, not Kynes's living signature.

Bren

Bren

Then the cliff is a dead mouth now, but a loud one.

Mara

Mara

House Xar can track the echo, maybe not your face.

The gold scar gives one slow throb against the dusk, and the hidden lattice inland answers with a cautious, distant shimmer.

Kynes sees the separation clearly now, his identity gone from the line, but its last known shape still broadcasting from the wound in the cliff.

Using Xar-Watcher’s Bane, Mark-Bearer’s Sovereignty, Ley-Line Conduit Mastery, and Archive-Severing Arcane Insight, I study the dead signature in the cliff scar. Can I alter or replay that severed signature through the lattice without reconnecting it to my living body?”

SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

The Void Signal Awakens

Kynes lowers his staff and lets his sight sink past the shine. The dead trace inside the scar unknots into layers, a speakerless imprint carried by the cliff stone and the buried lines beneath it.

Kynes

Kynes

The signature is separate from me. It is repeatable.

He turns the pattern with a careful touch of will, not feeding it, only reading the old shape it still remembers. The gold thread answers like a copied cadence, opening into a hollow echo that slides along the lattice.

For a breath, the cliff relays the severed mark without taking hold of his living body. The echo carries cleanly inland, a false note dressed in his old outline.

Then Kynes twists the flow sideways. The replay peels off into the scar itself, leaving his own presence unlatched and unreadable.

Beneath the gold line, a second weave appears, faint as breath on glass. Domini script pins the ley-lines in place, and the listener beyond the coast now has only a dead signature to measure.

Bren

Bren

So it can lie for you.

Mara

Mara

And House Xar is left chasing the echo, not your hand.

"who here had me chopping a hand off and regrowing a new one in their agenda for the day?" I smirk

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

The Void Signal Awakens
Kynes

Kynes

Who here had me chopping off a hand and growing a new one in their agenda for the day?

Kynes smirks as he says it, letting the dry edge of the joke carry over the cliff wind. The gold scar keeps its steady glow, but the false echo now sits idle in the stone, obedient and separate from his body.

Bren

Bren

Not mine. I would have preferred a less expensive lesson.

Mara

Mara

If it helps, I was fully against the dramatic version of this plan.

Bren lets out a short breath that is almost a laugh, then studies the scar with a weary, private pride. Mara angles her head toward the hidden Domini script, the caution in her face easing into interest.

Bren

Bren

You made it lie cleanly. That matters. House Xar gets a story they can chase, not your throat.

Mara

Mara

And the script beneath it pins the lie in place. Someone in House Domini knew how to build a dead trail.

The three of them stand with the wind and the old stone, the cliff scar bright above Phandelver and unreadable to any watcher listening from inland. The waxed cipher strip stays tucked away, and the road of the five-node chain remains only a memory of threat, not a fresh one.

" lady's back to the inn?," I say

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

The Void Signal Awakens
Kynes

Kynes

So. Back to the inn?

Bren

Bren

If you mean with me at your side, yes. Before the wind changes again.

Mara

Mara

And with the scar left talking to itself. We have what we came for.

Bren reaches for Kynes’s hand, not to steady him, just to guide the turn away from the cliff. Mara folds her arms, then gives the gold line one last wary look.

The false echo holds. Beneath the glow, the Domini script sits locked in place, pinning the ley-lines so House Xar tastes only the dead trail.

Bren

Bren

We walk in together, we keep the strip hidden, and we let the innkeeper think we are only tired.

Mara

Mara

That is the first sensible thing said on this cliff.

The three of them turn from the ledge. Behind them, the cliff scar burns steady over Phandelver, while the inland shimmer remains faint and cautious, fixed on the lie instead of Kynes.
