The Archivist's Final Testimony

Kynes and Bren step into a burial room of paper and stone. Shelves sag with crumbling scrolls, tablets lean like broken teeth, and cold dust hangs in the air. At the central desk, an echo of the High Archivist flickers into view, one hand resting near a ledger that matches Kynes's own.

The ledger is a duplicate. The records here are tied to the collapse.

Names first. Then the shape of the fraud.

The spectral figure turns a page that is not quite there. Its voice grows clearer, and the room seems to answer with a thin, far-off tremor beneath the floor.

Hale. Pell. Vance. The annex porter. And a third hand, never entered, only paid.

Bren

Bren

A third hand. That is what we needed.

The echo points at the ledger, then at the dark corridor behind the shattered shell. The gesture is not a threat, but an instruction. Whatever ruled the lattice is gone, and now the hidden author is finally close enough to name.

✓ Quest Accepted

Identify the third hand behind the fraud

" well this won't be over till after dinner, sable will be upset. She hates it when we're late." I stab the spirt with soul cutter

Well, this will not be over till after dinner. Sable will be upset.

Kynes drives the Soul-Cutter forward. The blade bites through the archivist’s flickering chest, and the echo shudders like torn parchment.

The High Archivist

The High Archivist

The third hand is the one that signs beneath the seal. House Xar. The architects do not work alone.

The spectral form splinters, and a hidden stack of copied routes spills from the desk in a pale drift of dust.

Bren

Bren

There. That is the missing link.

Behind the fractured shell, the dark corridor seems to deepen, while the seal inside the crystal flashes once and goes dim.

Kynes

Kynes

House Xar.

Quest Complete

Identify the third hand behind the fraud

I stab the spirt repeatedly " we killed all of them. No more house xar" I look at bren, " if you say I missed one no horny for you"

SUCCESS (Mediocre Melee Combat, rolled +3)

The Archivist's Final Testimony

Kynes steps in close and drives the Soul-Cutter through the archivist again, and again. The echo fractures into strips of cold light, each hit tearing more of it loose from the room.

Dust blows off the desk in little white bursts as the copied routes scatter wider, some skidding to Kynes's boots, others fanning toward the dark corridor.

The High Archivist collapses into a thin, wavering stain of script, then starts to come apart at the seams.

House Xar is not the root. It is the knife. The architects write beneath the district, where the records cannot be burned.

The last of the echo peels away, and a narrow brass index slips from the dissolving shape, clattering open on the stone with a marked page exposed.

Kynes

Kynes

House Xar.

Bren straightens, one hand lifting as if to point, then stops when the brass index clicks by itself toward the corridor.

The seal in the fractured crystal goes nearly dark, but a thin line of red still breathes under the blackened page, pointing deeper inside.

✓ Quest Accepted

Find the architects behind the district records

I use psycomatry to locate the records

SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

The Archivist's Final Testimony

Kynes sets the Soul-Cutter low and lets the room answer him. The marked page in the brass index trembles, then the copied routes on the floor go still as if pressed by an unseen hand.

Kynes

Kynes

The paper remembers.

A cold thread of memory runs through his palm, not sight but shape, the weight of shelves, the grind of hidden hinges, the order of hands that filed what should stay buried.

The brass index clicks open wider. One name settles into focus on the marked page, then a second mark beneath it, both tied to the dark corridor and the sealed chamber beyond.

Bren leans in at Kynes's shoulder, her gaze snapping from the page to the corridor as if she can feel the records pulling from deeper stone.

Bren

Bren

There. That mark is not storage. It is ownership.

The red trace under the blackened page flares once, and the sensation completes itself in Kynes's mind. The hidden records are not in the room, they are below it, in a chained archive chamber tied to the architects' hand.

" no horny for you Bren" I slap her ass " well until we're done"

The room settles around Kynes's blunt remark, dust slipping from the stone shelves. Bren straightens with a small, dry huff, then turns her head enough to meet him with one raised brow.

Bren

Bren

Save it for after the records. For now, keep your hands where they help.

A faint, almost amused stillness lingers in the burial room, the dark corridor waiting below like an open sentence.
