The crows wheel down into the fissure and vanish. Below, the tunnel breathes cold stone and dark, mineral ice. No violet pulse answers from the snow here, only the earth's low thrum.

Kynes sees it at once, this is a blind seam in the pass, a place the watcher lattice does not read cleanly. The tunnel curves under the main route, a hidden path that could carry them past the observatory line.

One of Kynes's shadow-crows drops a pale scrap at his feet, a torn strip of marked cord snagged from above. It points back toward the glowing routes they have been cutting, proof the lattice still spans the pass behind them.
