Kynes drops into the crawlspace, and the gold pulse slams through the stone like a heartbeat. Rows of iron-bound crates crowd the passage, each one tagged with a missing reeve's name. The labels look tidy, official, almost mundane.

He moves closer to the sealed bulkhead. The static thickens, hair-lifting and sharp, and the pulse beneath the floor answers his steps as if the whole wall is listening. The clerk-paper from above flutters in his hand, then steadies.

Up close, the crates are too clean for storage and too heavy for paperwork. The gold light leaks from seams in the floorboards, not from any lantern. It paints the bulkhead in a sacred, hidden glow.

Kynes stares at the bulkhead, then at the names on the crates. A concealed jurisdiction, a hidden transfer, a seal that behaves like administration. If the reeves are filed beneath the hall, then the hall itself is the lock on House Xar's secret.

Kynes plants the butt of his staff beside the bulkhead seam and drives his shoulder into the hidden latch. Stone grinds. Iron gives with a hard, reluctant click.

The sealed face shifts inward on well-oiled hinges, not magic, but old carpentry and heavier ironwork hidden under the masonry. The gold pulse from below runs straight through the opening like a clear signal.

Beyond the bulkhead lies a narrow transfer run, lined with chalk marks, tally scratches, and the same meticulous tags as the crates. Someone has been moving people here by hand.

Kynes steps through, the clerk-paper still in his hand, and follows the route where the floor slopes down. The steady gold beneath the boards keeps pace underfoot.

At the end of the transfer run, the passage opens onto rows of occupied holding niches. The missing reeves are there, alive, bound only by restraint and paperwork, staring back in the gold light.
