The darker seam splits wider, just as feared. Stone peels back into a jagged rift, and the lower relay groans under a pressure older than the room.

Ozone bites the air. Deep-earth decay rolls out with it, and the pale script on the walls whips into frantic warning strokes, as if the chamber itself is trying to shout.

Kynes stands at the edge of the fracture as the floor caves inward around the seam. The relay core lies shattered behind him, and the opening now behaves like an anchor being pulled free.

From below, something answers. Not a voice, not quite a shape, but a vast presence pressing up through the crack, testing the chamber with patient hunger.

Kynes

Kynes

The seam was a lock.

The rift widens another handspan. Dust lifts from the floor in a slow spiral, and the warning script flickers between red and pale gold, caught between sealing and surrender.

Ledger and Venom brace beside Kynes as the chamber tilts toward the breach, and the thing beneath Phandelver begins to climb into sight.

“Venom, Ledger—before I touch that thing, tell me exactly what ‘binding the breach with my essence’ would do. Would I merely seal it, or would it make me an anchor, connect me permanently to whatever is below, allow anything through me, or give either side a claim over the other?”

Kynes

Before I do anything stupid, tell me exactly what binding the breach with my essence does.

Ledger

Ledger

It seals, yes. But it also makes you the pattern it seals with. The breach would read you as structure, not merely caller.

Venom

Venom

Structure can be climbed. Claim it, and the dark below answers through you. Refuse, and it hunts the crack instead.

Ledger

Ledger

Permanent connection is likely. Not ownership, precisely. Reciprocal access. Something below could press against your pulse, and you against its.

Venom

Venom

Either side may gain a claim. That is the price of becoming the hinge.

Ledger

Ledger

There is a cost already, Kynes. Your frost-scarring is spreading while you listen. The chamber is learning your shape.

The warning script on the wall flashes once, hard gold over red, and the rift below throbs in answer. Ledger hovers closer, as if to be read into certainty, while Venom coils higher toward Kynes's hand, hungry for his next move.

" I have a dumber question, what happens if a fully merge with the void well."

Kynes

Kynes

I’m asking because I want the ugly version. If I merge with it, what does it take from me, and what does it leave behind?

Ledger

Ledger

It would take your separation. You would not stand apart from the well anymore. You would become the way it recognizes shape, distance, and intent.

Venom

Venom

And it would take your fear of the dark. That part is useful. The rest is bargaining noise.

Ledger

Ledger

Your name would still exist. But it may no longer mean only you. The relay could carry you, echo you, or answer before you finish thinking.

Venom

Venom

He means the well would learn your rhythm. Then it would have to breathe around you.

Ledger

Ledger

You are asking as if the question is hypothetical. Your hand says otherwise.

The gold and crimson flicker steadies for a heartbeat, and the frost on Kynes’s fingers crawls another line up his skin. Ledger angles closer, patient and precise. Venom lifts, coiled with interest, waiting for Kynes to choose whether to listen or strike first.

I open a gate to where sable is, take her and close the gate. I open a gate to hall of welcome. I release venom from my hand and tell him to protect Bren and the others. I then flash step to the void-well and look in and merge with the void-well

Venom

Kynes tears a gate open where the relay is weakest, and the room doubles for a breath, Phandelver’s Hall of Welcome flashing beyond the rift like a remembered wound. The opening snaps wider, swallowing cold and distance together.

He drags Sable through the breach and yanks the gate shut behind her, the seal biting closed with a hard, metallic sting. The Hall settles back into place on the other side, intact for the moment.

Venom pours free from Kynes’s hand in a thin, hungry coil, no longer pinned to his flesh. It unspools toward the dark with a low, eager shiver, turning its attention toward Bren and the others left behind.

Venom

Venom

I will keep them breathing.

Kynes vanishes in a shadow-step and reappears at the lip of the void-well, staff braced, frost crawling bright over his marked hand. The surface below is no longer still, it watches back.

Kynes

Kynes

The well knows him.

He looks in, and the hunger answers by leaning toward him through the glassy dark. Then Kynes lets the edge take him, merging into the void-well as the seal glyph flares gold and crimson.

Merge with the void-well

I fully merge with the void-well to lock the ancients out completely.

Kynes stops fighting the pull and lets the void-well take the shape of him. Frost, shadow, and seal-light fold together at his marked hand, then sink beneath the glassy surface like ink dropped into deep water.

The rift answers at once. The chamber’s cold pressure eases, but the seal glyph flares hard enough to stain the dark with gold and crimson, as if the relay itself is being rewritten around his pulse.

Venom recoils from the edge, then steadies, its thin coil tightening with wary attention toward the hallward passage. The hungry recognition in the walls goes quiet, starved of a clean path inward.

Venom

Venom

He is inside now. That will have to be enough.

On the well’s surface, Kynes’s reflection blurs, then resolves into something deeper, a dark lattice under the skin of the room. The ancient pressure below no longer presses at the chamber door, it presses against him.

Kynes

Kynes

The lock is him now.

The relay stops trying to swallow the hall. It bows around Kynes instead, held shut by a new, living hinge. The only motion left is the faint crawl of frost across the floor and the slow, watchful shimmer in the well.
