The tunnel opens into a tight, circular room of stone shelves and stale dust. At the center, a heavy desk waits under an open ledger and a candle still smoking fresh wax. The boot tracks stop there.

Kynes reaches the desk. Beside the ledger lies an ink-stained glove, and beneath it, a map of the watchtower's foundations marked with a second seam. The marks do not lead away, they point inward.

A low scrape answers from the shelves. One of the shadows straightens into a robed watcher with the High Archivist's signet on his chain, his hand already on the desk edge.

The ledger lies open on a page of names, payments, and foundation routes. At the bottom, a fresh ink note repeats one phrase, sealed for descent.

Kynes closes his fingers in that tiny, precise gesture, and the room seems to tighten around it. The Watcher’s composure slips at once.

Bren’s eyes flick from the sealed documents to Kynes, then to the locked drawer beside the desk. The Watcher reaches for the key ring at his belt, but stops himself.

He swallows, then slides the ring across the desk with two fingers. The brass key lands beside the archive ledger, its iron clasp already half-lifted by age.

Kynes takes the ledger. The cover is cold, the pages thick with command seals, trade marks, and margins crowded with corrections in a second hand.

On the first open page, one line is underlined twice, and the ink names the leash-holder plainly.
