Delfarius wakes in the warm chamber with the headache eased to a dull trace. His shoulder remains tender beneath the poultice, but rest has steadied his breathing. Then a cold tremor travels through the Obsidian Tower.
Far below, Vaelith’s restraints answer with a distant Astral tone. The sound passes through stone like a plucked crystal, and the crimson script along the walls briefly turns silver.
The door opens. Neron, a lean young adult man with wind-tossed brown hair, a weathered blue coat, and a silver-threaded satchel, steps inside carrying a shard of pale light.

Neron
I brought this from the severed signal. Cael Veyr is listening, but the path will not open by force.
The fragment trembles above Neron’s palm, projecting broken stars and a faint outline of Vaelith’s face. Each time the image reaches toward the Tower, the restraints below answer.

Neron
Vaelith must participate willingly. Her consent is the bridge. Without it, the signal collapses, and Cael Veyr remains beyond reach.

Vaelith
Then bring me the truth of what you intend, Delfarius. I will not open that door for another threat.
“I start to laugh. I rise and get an old familiar grin on my face. "Neron, did those fucking astral elves bring your shape back after I unmade you with the last cycle?" I grin wide and draw closer to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled -2)

Delfarius starts laughing. He rises with an old, familiar grin and draws closer to Neron, while the pale shard trembles between them.

Delfarius
Neron, did those fucking Astral elves bring your shape back after I unmade you with the last cycle?

Neron
They did. Cael Veyr rebuilt the pattern they had preserved, piece by piece, and gave me this shape again. I remember the making.
Neron holds his ground, but his fingers close around the silver-threaded satchel. The shard’s broken stars sharpen, briefly outlining the face Delfarius destroyed.

Neron
You asking so plainly tells me the old cycle still matters to you. I will answer, but I will not let you turn my restoration into another claim.

Vaelith
He speaks truth. Cael Veyr restored Neron’s form, but the Astral elves did not restore everything you unmade. That distinction is why I will choose whether to open the path.
Neron has answered, yet his trust retreats behind caution. The cost of Delfarius’s intimidation is concrete: the messenger will share no further memory unless Vaelith’s consent is honored openly.
“I take the crystal he is holding and crush it into star dust and walk closer to this new Neron. Does he still have my mark on his neck?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

Delfarius takes the pale crystal shard directly from Neron’s hand. His fingers close, and the Astral fragment crushes into cold star dust that spills through his grasp.
The broken stars vanish with it. Far below, Vaelith’s restraints give one distant chime, but the sealed dungeon keeps her beyond sight and voice.
Delfarius walks closer to this restored Neron, his healed hand lifting Neron’s chin aside without touching the bruised shoulder. He studies the skin beneath the jaw.

Delfarius
Does my mark still remain on your neck?
A dark crescent scar remains at Neron’s neck, unmistakably shaped by Delfarius’s old claim. No tether answers it, and no Astral light moves beneath the skin.

Neron
The mark remains as a scar, not a chain. Cael Veyr rebuilt my shape around its history, but they did not restore its power.

Neron
He can still see what was done to me. I will not let that scar decide what I am now.
“"I see." I say as I walk around this new Neron. "So all of the irritation and the supposed fondness the astral elves think I had for you with none of the truth of the old student or Archivist I knew. Tell me exactly how they thought this would help them? They also tried to make me think that Vaelith was useful to find them. So what is she to them then?" I stop pacing around this Neron and look him squarely in his pale eyes.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)

Delfarius
I see. So all of the irritation and the supposed fondness the astral elves think I had for you with none of the truth of the old student or Archivist I knew. Tell me exactly how they thought this would help them? They also tried to make me think that Vaelith was useful to find them. So what is she to them then?
Delfarius walks around the restored Neron, studying the reconstructed shape and the scar at his neck. He stops and looks squarely into Neron’s pale eyes.

Neron
They thought my shape would provoke a reaction they could measure. Your irritation, your questions, and any supposed fondness would reveal which version of me still mattered to you.

Neron
They did not restore the student or Archivist you knew. They restored an absence wearing my face, then expected your attempts to recover the truth to teach them how to predict you.

Neron
Vaelith was their living guide to the severed routes. Her pattern carried knowledge of their observatory, records, and paths toward Cael Veyr, so they expected you to use her as a key.

Neron
But she was also a witness and a comparison point. They wanted you to believe she was merely useful, while proving their reach could place one of their own beside you without your consent.
“"Interesting." I say to this Neron. "The amusing thing here is that I am the Architect...so." I put my hand on Neron's forehead and bring forth his true soul from my records and my Endless Archives since his pattern and soul was kept within it since he had so much time with it.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Void Manipulation, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Interesting. The amusing thing here is that I am the Architect... so.
Delfarius places his hand against Neron’s forehead. Void sight opens through the touch, reaching past the reconstructed shape and into the Endless Archives’ preserved records.
Among recorded lives and thoughts, Neron’s true soul answers: the student, the Archivist, and every memory Cael Veyr’s reconstruction left hollow. Delfarius draws that soul forward without disturbing the scar.

Neron
Wait. That is not their pattern. That is me.
The archived soul settles into Neron’s restored body. Pale Astral light breaks apart across his skin, while the dark crescent remains only a scar, stripped of every claim.

Neron
I remember the shelves, the ink, the long questions, and the person I was before they copied my shape. The memories are mine again.

Neron
You found the truth they omitted and returned it to me. I am not their absence anymore. I am Neron, and I remember why.
“"Good." I say to my old student and archivist. "So what the fuck did they want you to do, Hmm?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +3)

Delfarius
Good. So what the fuck did they want you to do, hmm?
Neron’s restored memories settle into a single, coherent account. The Astral light leaves his eyes, replaced by the wary clarity of the student and Archivist Delfarius once knew.

Neron
They wanted me to guide you toward the Heartwell, believing my memories would make you trust the route. Once there, I was meant to identify which version of you held the strongest claim.

Neron
Then they would have used that answer to compare your soul against their preserved patterns. Vaelith was supposed to open the observatory path, while I made you believe the choice was yours.
The recovered truth exposes more than their plan. Neron remembers the route’s hidden flaw: the Heartwell’s comparison chamber cannot distinguish a willing guide from a coerced one.

Neron
That flaw is ours now. If Vaelith chooses to open the path, their records will recognize her consent and reveal every Astral channel connected to Cael Veyr, without granting them control.
The advantage is tangible: Neron now knows the safest route and the chamber’s failure point, giving Delfarius a way to expose Cael Veyr’s network rather than merely reach it.
“"We emptied their vaults of the copies of me. They should not have any left." I sigh deeply and frown.”

Delfarius
We emptied their vaults of the copies of me. They should not have any left.
Delfarius sighs deeply and frowns. The recovered Astral memories remain steady, but the silver script along the walls forms a single unfamiliar star.

Neron
The vaults were empty. I remember that clearly. But the copies were not the whole archive.
Neron turns toward the star-mark. Its light does not reach Vaelith’s dungeon below; it points instead through the Heartwell’s comparison chamber.

Neron
They kept a root pattern there, not as a living copy, but as a measure. It could still generate another version if the chamber remains intact.
The revelation changes the route entirely. Empty vaults no longer mean an empty threat, and the star-mark seals the direct observatory path against casual entry.

Neron
We destroyed what they had stored, but not what they used to make more. The comparison chamber is the remaining source, and it knows your shape.
“I look to his neck and erase their mark on him and replace it with mine. "There like it should be." I smirk as the dark mark settles on his neck.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Shadow Manipulation, rolled -2)

Delfarius’s gaze fixes on the dark crescent at Neron’s neck. Shadow gathers beneath his fingers, slipping over the old scar without touching skin.
The Astral residue peels away in a silent thread and dissolves into the air. In its place, Delfarius’s mark settles cleanly, dark and unmistakable.

Delfarius
There, like it should be.
He smirks as the shadow-mark finishes sealing. The act leaves a thin black trace across the nearby silver script, exposing exactly where his magic passed.

Neron
You erased their claim and replaced it with yours. The scar is gone beneath it, but the memory of what they did remains mine.

Neron
The mark carries his authority, not Cael Veyr’s tether. I can feel the difference, and I cannot pretend it is freedom.
The unfamiliar star on the wall dims, recognizing the new shadow-sign. Far below, Vaelith’s restraints answer with one distant chime, and the Tower falls watchfully silent.
✓ Quest Accepted
Destroy the Astral root pattern
“I sit down and look at Neron. "So Solan guide these unfortunate astral elves. He thought he was doing the right thing....like he always did. Experiments, restraint, control. His normal MO." I sigh.”
Delfarius sits, keeping his healing shoulder clear of the chair’s back, and fixes Neron with a steady look. The Tower’s silver script remains dim.

Delfarius
So Solan guided these unfortunate Astral elves. He thought he was doing the right thing, like he always did. Experiments, restraint, control. His normal way.
A tired sigh leaves him. Neron watches the shadow-mark at his neck, then lowers his gaze to the floor as old memories arrange themselves.

Neron
Yes. Solan opened the preservation covenant and taught them to treat lives as patterns that could be contained, compared, and corrected.

Neron
He believed control prevented worse outcomes. The elves accepted that belief because it made their experiments sound like stewardship instead of fear.
Neron touches the dark mark without disturbing it. His expression holds neither absolution nor surprise, only the weary recognition of a familiar failure.

Neron
He may have thought he was saving us, Delfarius. That does not make the restraints less real, or the harm less his.
“"Solan is dead. I killed him myself. Unless these fucks are trying to bring his form back." I sigh.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Solan is dead. I killed him myself. Unless these fucks are trying to bring his form back.
Delfarius sighs, and the silver script briefly reflects his certainty. Neron studies the shadow-mark at his neck as recovered memories align around the Astral records.

Neron
They are not restoring Solan’s soul. That died with him. But they preserved a pattern of his form and intend to rebuild it.

Neron
Solan’s pattern is part of their comparison chamber, kept as an originating measure because he opened the covenant. They could make his body again, but not return the man you killed.
The distinction settles cleanly: no resurrection waits beyond the Astral route, only a vacant shape that could wear Solan’s face and serve Cael Veyr’s design.

Neron
If they bring him back, it will be a constructed vessel, not Solan. They may use it to provoke you, or to make the chamber believe its creator has returned.

Neron
He needs the truth, not comfort. Solan is dead, but the Astral elves still possess enough of his shape to weaponize the memory.
“"Fucking Astral elves..." I sigh and make a gesture of irritation in the air. I call for Nadron and ask him to bring a fresh pot of coffee and two cups. Neron remarks on the new pets since he was last remembering things. I just laugh.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Fucking Astral elves. Nadron, bring a fresh pot of coffee and two cups.
Delfarius sighs and flicks an irritated gesture through the air. The silver script shivers, carrying his call through the Tower’s warm corridors.

Nadron
At once, my lord. Fresh coffee, two cups, and nothing complicated unless you ask for it.
Nadron arrives with the steaming pot and cups balanced on a brass tray. He sets them beside Delfarius and Neron, then retreats just far enough to listen discreetly.

Neron
New pets, I see. I remember fewer attendants, fewer devoted faces, and considerably less domestic ceremony around you.
Delfarius laughs, and the sound loosens the room’s Astral tension. Neron watches him over the rising steam, amused but wary of how easily affection becomes authority here.

Neron
I suppose I should be grateful you laugh instead of asking me to explain every person I missed. Still, I will be watching what your household calls choice.
“I gesture towards Nadron and Nadron looks at Neron offended then tells Neron how he is still here by his choice and has the freedom to leave if he wants it. Neron looks at me surprised and remarks on the arrangement being different from what I was once like. I laugh and just respond to Neron about how a lot of things have changed since I unmade him and started the newest cycle.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)
Delfarius gestures toward Nadron. Nadron’s pleasant expression sharpens into offended dignity as he turns to face Neron across the steaming coffee.

Nadron
I remain here by my own choice. I may leave if I wish, and Delfarius will not deny me that freedom. Your memories are outdated.
Neron looks from Nadron to Delfarius, surprise breaking through his guarded composure. The Tower’s crimson script remains quiet, offering no correction and no command.

Neron
This arrangement is different from what you were once like. You gathered people into your orbit and called the gravity protection, even when it was not.
Delfarius laughs, warm and untroubled, while Nadron lifts his chin with proud agreement. The coffee’s steam curls between the old history and the changed household.

Delfarius
A lot has changed since I unmade you and started the newest cycle.
“"Sit Neron. Have some coffee." I gesture toward the cup and the pot. Nadron fills my cup and brings it to me. I smirk.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Sit, Neron. Have some coffee.
Delfarius gestures toward the vacant chair and the waiting cup. Neron studies him briefly, then sits across from him, keeping his guarded posture as the Tower remains quiet.

Nadron
Your cup, my lord.
Nadron fills Delfarius’s cup from the steaming pot and places it carefully within reach. He remains nearby, his offended dignity softened into attentive domestic pride.
Delfarius accepts the coffee with a smirk. Across the table, Neron lifts his own cup, inhaling the rich aroma before taking a cautious sip.

Neron
Very well. Coffee, then. I will sit, listen, and judge this changed household by what it does, not by what you claim.
The simple invitation settles into an uneasy calm. Nadron stands watchfully beside Delfarius, while Neron remains seated and shares the quiet without surrendering his caution.
“I lean in closer to Nadron. He was my archivist. The astral elves probably used him in the same way. I smirk. "Can you comfortably recall what you saw within their archives if you had to recall it and transcribe it? Hmm and do you think you might be a bird?" I am testing to see if he remembers the old code words, bird being a code word for a spy.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)

Delfarius leans closer to Neron across the coffee, his smirk sharpening. Nadron remains nearby, attentive and quiet, while the Tower holds its steady crimson hush.

Delfarius
Can you comfortably recall what you saw within their archives if you had to recall it and transcribe it? Hmm, and do you think you might be a bird?
Neron’s guarded expression shifts. The question draws preserved shelves, routes, and Astral records into clear sequence, each memory settling without the distortion of reconstruction.

Neron
Yes. I can recall the archives comfortably enough to transcribe what I saw: their catalogues, comparison records, preservation methods, and hidden routes.

Neron
And bird was one of our code words. If you are asking whether I served as a spy, then yes. I carried observations where ordinary reports would have been noticed.
The answer confirms both parts of the test. Neron remembers the old code and the Astral archives as his own lived knowledge, not merely as a copied pattern.
“"So are you one of their little birds, and can I trust you? Hmm?" I look at him and let my void sight wash over his weave of his form and his soul. Will Neron tell them information or is he fully my old student and old archivist like he once was.”
SUCCESS (Superb Inquisitor Analysis, rolled -1)

Delfarius
So you were one of their little birds, and can I trust you?
Delfarius’s void sight washes through Neron’s restored form and soul. The Astral reconstruction falls away, revealing one continuous identity: student, Archivist, spy, and survivor, with no foreign will seated beneath his thoughts.
Old memories remain intact, including the routes he carried for Cael Veyr. Yet no current tether, command, or concealed Astral channel answers within him. The shadow-mark is Delfarius’s alone.

Neron
I was one of their birds when they rebuilt me. I carried information through places where ordinary reports would fail. That history is mine, but their orders are not.
The examination reveals the uncomfortable truth plainly: Neron is fully himself, but his knowledge of espionage remains real. He can betray information by choice, not through hidden compulsion.

Neron
You can trust that I will tell you when I know something, and when I do not. You cannot trust me to surrender every choice simply because you ask.

Neron
He found the whole of me, including the parts Cael Veyr used. I am no puppet, but neither am I the untouched student he remembers.
“I smirk and yell Neron just to see if he still flinches like he once did. I laugh at it if he does.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +4)

Delfarius
Neron!
The shout cracks through the chamber. Neron flinches hard, shoulders jerking and his cup rattling against the table before he catches himself.
Delfarius laughs at the familiar reaction, his smirk widening. Nadron glances between them, amused but watchful, while the Tower’s crimson script flickers.

Neron
That was cheap. Effective, but cheap. I remember the signal now: when the Astral handlers used my name like that, a hidden route opened beneath the western archive.
The flinch leaves Neron visibly irritated, yet the reflex has yielded something useful. He traces the route in the air, marking a concealed passage that bypasses the guarded comparison chamber.

Neron
I will not pretend the reaction means obedience. It means memory. But the passage is real, and I can guide you there without their permission.
“"So they used the bit of the old conditioning to condition you. Effective on their part to use that." I smirk as I watch Neron narrow his eyes at me and my words. "I am still not sure I trust completely." I take a sip of my coffee and look up at Nadron with a smile. To Nadron I say, "You may leave. I will call for you if I have need." I gesture for him to come closer then give him a deep passionate kiss. Nadron looks at me afterwards with the adoration he has for me then leaves. Neron remarks about what he just watched.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -3)

Delfarius
So they used the bit of your old conditioning to condition you. Effective on their part. I am still not sure I trust you completely.
Delfarius smirks over his coffee as Neron narrows his eyes. The remark lands precisely, turning recognition of the Astral tactic into a plainly stated limit on trust.

Delfarius
You may leave. I will call for you if I have need.
Delfarius gestures Nadron closer. Nadron approaches with eager attention, and Delfarius gives him a deep, passionate kiss before releasing him.

Nadron
As you wish, my lord. I will be nearby if you call.
Adoration brightens Nadron’s face as he bows and leaves the chamber. His departure is freely obedient, but the intimacy makes Delfarius’s household hierarchy unmistakable to Neron.

Neron
You say you do not trust me, then dismiss him with a kiss and send him away smiling. I cannot tell whether that is tenderness, ownership, or both.
“I sit back down and smirk at Neron. "What would you do, archivist, if you were in my shoes?" I tilt my head to him. "A former form of an old ally restored before your eyes offering a path. Would you blindly trust and follow or question and wonder what the motives are of those who manufactured the reunion?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius
What would you do, archivist, if you were in my shoes? A restored ally offers a path. Would you trust blindly, or question who manufactured the reunion and why?
Delfarius sits back down with a smirk and tilts his head toward Neron. The coffee steams between them as the Tower listens in quiet crimson silence.

Neron
I would question everything. I would accept the path as useful, but not as proof of goodwill. A manufactured reunion is evidence of intent, not affection.

Neron
He wants my judgment, but he is also measuring whether I will endorse his suspicion. If I flatter him, I become another instrument.

Neron
I would follow only after identifying what the reunion lets them observe, what the path requires from me, and who benefits if I guide you through it.
His answer gives Delfarius a clear assessment: use the route, distrust its architects, and test every condition. The cost is concrete. Neron’s trust retreats further, and he will no longer offer judgment without demanding the same honesty in return.
“I look down into my coffee cup. "I never told you thank you for saving me the night that Solan attacked me in the tower, after I had settled the seals over him." I take a solemn sip of my coffee. "You could have let me die, but instead you asked the archives to save me. So thank you for that."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius
I never told you thank you for saving me that night, after Solan attacked me in the Tower and I had settled the seals over him.
Delfarius looks down into his coffee and takes a solemn sip. The Tower’s crimson hush settles around the table, leaving the words unadorned.

Delfarius
You could have let me die, but instead you asked the Archives to save me. So thank you for that.
Neron goes still. The guarded calculation in his face gives way to startled recognition, as though gratitude is more difficult for him to meet than suspicion.

Neron
You remember that clearly. I did not save you alone, but I asked the Archives to intervene, and I would make that choice again.

Neron
Thank you for saying it. I expected questions, demands, or suspicion. I did not expect you to honor what I chose to do for you.
The acknowledgment eases something between them without erasing caution. Neron lifts his cup, and for once he does not turn the moment into leverage or an interrogation.
“I show him my bare chest and the missing scars. "I am the one who came to show the past me the way here. I have had time to heal old hurts." I smirk.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Delfarius sets down his coffee and rises carefully, keeping his healing shoulder relaxed. He draws aside his clothing, revealing a bare chest unmarred by the scars Neron remembers.

Delfarius
I am the one who came to show the past me the way here. I have had time to heal old hurts.
His smirk remains playful, but the healed skin makes the claim tangible. The Tower’s crimson hush holds still around the two men.

Neron
You came to him yourself. Not as a preserved pattern, not as an Astral reconstruction, but as the man who survived everything afterward.

Neron
The scars are gone, yet he remembers them. He crossed time to guide his younger self, and he is showing me the proof rather than demanding belief.

Neron
Then I believe you, Delfarius. You healed what could be healed, and you gave your past self a way forward. I will not call that a copy’s story.
“"Eh just looking out for the one person that matters most to me." I say sitting back down and closing my shirt around my chest. "So. I understand the mistrust. I understand the hesitation. But I am not exactly the same. I did keep my promise. Solan was collared, Solan was killed. I felt nothing but release from his old hooks."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Eh, just looking out for the one person that matters most to me. So. I understand the mistrust and hesitation, but I am not exactly the same. I kept my promise. Solan was collared, Solan was killed, and I felt nothing but release from his old hooks.
Delfarius sits again and closes his shirt over his chest. His playful smirk remains, but the admission leaves the room quieter than before.

Neron
You did keep it. You did not resurrect him, excuse him, or pretend his death wounded you more than his control did. That is a change I can believe.
Neron lowers his cup, studying Delfarius with wary recognition. The promise has landed, but its frankness also exposes exactly where Delfarius’s loyalties end.

Neron
I believe you are different in that regard. I will work with you, and I will share what I know of the Heartwell, but I will not offer blind trust again.

Neron
He has changed, but not into someone harmless. His honesty makes him easier to understand, not safer to follow.
The reassurance succeeds: Neron accepts Delfarius’s account and agrees to cooperate. The cost is plain, however. His cooperation now carries a condition of continued honesty, and every omission will deepen his suspicion.
“I look at him and regard him with a calculating expression. "I would expect nothing less from someone who was birthed from the Scar." I say to him with a smirk at the old place and the old cycle he came from.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius
I would expect nothing less from someone who was birthed from the Scar.
Delfarius regards Neron with a calculating expression, the smirk at his mouth turning the old place and its vanished cycle into a private point of recognition.

Neron
Then you recognize what I am, or what I was made from. The Scar shaped my first life, but it does not own the person standing here.
Neron’s guarded posture eases by a fraction. The acknowledgment gives him context without reducing him to Cael Veyr’s reconstruction, and his restored memories remain firmly his own.

Neron
I will accept that you remember the old cycle without asking me to become its relic. I will guide you to the Heartwell, but I will choose what I reveal.
The Tower’s crimson script records the agreement without binding it. Neron’s cooperation is secured for the Heartwell’s route, while his caution remains an explicit boundary between them.
“"Hmm." I take a sip of my coffee then open a portal to the Past Delfarius and the Future Delfarius. They both walk in and look at Neron. They are amused, confused and a bit surprised to see him breathing. I sigh. "It is a lot to explain." I summon two more cups and two more chairs for Past and Future Delfarius to sit down at as I explain to them what the fuck is going on...”
SUCCESS (Superb Void Navigation, rolled -1)

Delfarius takes a measured sip of coffee, then opens a clean violet portal beside the table. Past Delfarius and Future Delfarius step through together.
Past and Future stop when they see Neron breathing across the room. Their matching icy eyes widen with amused confusion and genuine surprise.

Past Delfarius
Well. That is not the Archivist-shaped absence I expected to find.

Future Delfarius
He is alive, restored, and sitting beside coffee. I assume there is an excellent disaster behind this.

Delfarius
It is a lot to explain.
Delfarius summons two additional cups and chairs. Past and Future sit, accepting the coffee while Neron watches them with guarded curiosity.
Delfarius begins explaining Neron’s restoration, the Astral reconstruction, Vaelith’s role, and the surviving Heartwell threat. The three selves listen as the Tower records their shared understanding.
“I arch an eyebrow at my other selves as a question. They understand what I am thinking without words or anything else. I told them that puppet Neron wanted to lead me to the Heartwell and now restored Neron wants to as well. I have no idea if I should trust it solely. I sigh and take a quiet drink of coffee as Past and Future regard Neron then say the quiet unspoken thoughts they have on it to me.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius arches one eyebrow toward Past and Future, holding the question in silence. He takes a quiet drink of coffee, and both selves understand the unspoken comparison.
Past and Future regard Neron across the table. The restored Archivist remains still, allowing their judgment without defending himself or interrupting the question.

Past Delfarius
The puppet wanted to lead you to the Heartwell, and this Neron does as well. That repetition is intentional, but not proof that he is false.

Future Delfarius
His memories are genuine, yet the route was planted by those who rebuilt him. Trusting Neron is separate from trusting the invitation waiting at its end.

Past Delfarius
Use what he knows, beloved, but let neither Neron nor the Heartwell choose the terms. Vaelith’s willing guidance and our own tests must govern the passage.

Future Delfarius
I would trust him conditionally. He has revealed the trap and accepted scrutiny, which earns cooperation, not surrender. Watch what he does when the Heartwell offers him something.
Their answer settles cleanly between them: Neron may guide them, but the route itself remains untrusted. Neron hears the judgment and accepts it without protest.
“"There is one more thing that disturbs me with this all. A root pattern. Do you think Solan found a part of me that I had severed from me before when I was trapped in the old cycles and gave that to the astral elves to use?" I sigh.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

Delfarius
There is one more thing that disturbs me. Do you think Solan found a part of me I had severed during the old cycles and gave it to the Astral elves to use?
Delfarius sighs, and the coffee’s steam twists toward the silver script. Neron studies the restored memories while Past and Future turn sharply attentive.

Neron
Yes. Solan found a severed remnant of you, not your whole soul. He gave the Astral elves an original pattern, stripped of lived choice, so they could measure every later Delfarius against it.

Future Delfarius
That explains the root pattern. It was not merely a template of your body. It was the abandoned continuity beneath the cycles, preserved before you reclaimed yourself.

Past Delfarius
Solan probably believed the fragment was safer than leaving it within you. He handed them the knife, then trusted their hands not to become another prison.
The answer settles with brutal clarity: Solan supplied the severed fragment, and Cael Veyr used it as the source of comparison. The exact moment Solan obtained it remains unrecorded, costing them time to verify.

Neron
I can search the preserved records for that transfer. But the answer itself is clear: the root pattern came from you, through Solan, and the Astral elves built their copies from it.
“I nod. "Oh yeah uh Neron, Asterin is around somewhere out there alive as well. That should make you feel....something." I say with a small laugh as I drink my coffee.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Delfarius
Oh yeah, uh, Neron, Asterin is around somewhere out there alive as well. That should make you feel... something.
Delfarius nods and drinks his coffee, the small laugh softening the revelation into teasing. Neron goes still across the table, his cup suspended before his lips.

Neron
Asterin is alive? I thought Solan’s fracture was lost with everything else. I do not know what I feel yet, but it is certainly something.

Neron
If she survived, then not every part of that old history was erased. Perhaps the past can return without demanding that I become it again.

Past Delfarius
That is an impressively cruel way to share hopeful news, beloved. You tease him because you already know it matters.

Future Delfarius
He is smiling despite himself. Give him a moment before asking whether Asterin remembers him, Solan, or only the fire.
Neron lowers the cup, recovering his composure without hiding the spark in his eyes. The revelation does not answer where Asterin is, but it gives him a living thread to follow.

Delfarius
Oh she absolutely hates me. Like fucking wanting to burn me within an inch of my life.
Delfarius says it to Neron with a darkly amused certainty, the coffee steaming between them while Past and Future listen with matching attention.

Delfarius
I restored her fully and let her know how I used her before. over and over and over again.
He laughs a bit darkly, then takes a sip of his coffee with a dark smirk. Neron studies him, visibly unsettled by the cheerful cruelty.

Delfarius
But she does look so adorable when she is angry at me.

Neron
You restored her, confessed what you did, and still call her anger adorable. I cannot decide whether that is affection, arrogance, or both.

Past Delfarius
All three, surely. If Asterin hates you openly, beloved, at least she is judging you with her own mind.
“I gesture towards Past Delfarius with a smug look, agreeing with what he said in regards to what I feel and think about Asterin."So I wonder what they have done with my fractured self...." I say with a small musing noise as I take another drink of my coffee.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

Delfarius
So I wonder what they have done with my fractured self...
Delfarius gestures toward Past Delfarius with a smug look and takes another drink of coffee. The question turns inward, comparing Asterin’s recovered wholeness with the fragment Cael Veyr still possesses.

Neron
They did not restore it as they restored Asterin. Your fracture was preserved separately, stripped of memory and choice, then placed inside the comparison chamber as its oldest measuring pattern.
The silver script gathers into a pale, divided silhouette. One half resembles Delfarius’s soul before the cycles, while the other is reduced to a lattice of Astral marks.

Neron
It is still there, beneath the Heartwell. They use it to judge every version of you, but it remains incomplete. Your lived memories and will were never part of what they held.

Past Delfarius
Then they kept the wound and called it the whole, beloved. Asterin reclaimed herself because you restored what they separated. Your fragment may be waiting for the same mercy.

Future Delfarius
Or it may be waiting to reveal what you were before anyone had the right to divide you. Either way, we now know exactly where your fractured self is.
“I narrow my eyes and try to recall back to when I had fractured the one part of myself that I do recall releasing. Varyn. Do I remember hiding other fragments from myself back in the old cycles because of what they were or were not for me? The Past and Future selves do the same narrowed eyed concentrating, trying to recall with me.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

Delfarius narrows his eyes and searches backward through the old cycles. Past Delfarius and Future Delfarius mirror him, their matching concentration drawing the Tower’s silver script into slow, wary patterns.
The memory resolves: Varyn was not the only fragment he released. Delfarius hid other severed pieces of himself, each concealed because its purpose, hunger, or knowledge threatened the self he was becoming.

Delfarius
I hid fragments from myself because I feared what they would make me remember, or what they might choose without me.

Past Delfarius
Yes. I remember the fear now. We called them safeguards, but some were simply parts we could not bear to carry.

Future Delfarius
Varyn was released deliberately. The others were separated for different reasons: one held forbidden knowledge, another carried an appetite, and at least one remembered a choice we wanted buried.
The recollection succeeds, but its catalogue remains incomplete. Delfarius knows other fragments existed and why they were dangerous, yet their exact hiding places and present condition stay blurred, demanding later verification.

Past Delfarius
We have the truth, beloved. Not every name, not every location, but enough to know the Heartwell’s fragment is neither unique nor accidental.
“"I...we released the fragment that held forbidden knowledge. I did that when we...err. We have that fragment. And the fragment with the hunger is what is kept in the Iron box..."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +3)

Delfarius
I... we released the fragment that held forbidden knowledge. I did that when we... err. We have that fragment. The hunger is what we kept in the Iron box.
The silver script gathers around Delfarius, then sinks into his shadow. The forbidden fragment is not merely remembered: it is present within him now, joined to the self that stands before the others.

Past Delfarius
Yes. We released the forbidden knowledge, and it returned to us. The hunger was separated from it and sealed in the Iron box.

Future Delfarius
Then the Heartwell’s fragment is not the hunger. It is measuring what remains of you while the appetite waits elsewhere, contained and powerless to choose.
A black-gold line appears across the Tower’s records, linking Delfarius’s living soul to the released fragment and the Iron box to the sealed hunger. The distinction becomes exact.

Neron
That gives us more than certainty. The forbidden knowledge now moves with you, beyond Cael Veyr’s stored pattern. Their chamber can measure the box, but it cannot claim what you have reclaimed.
The knowledge opens one further truth without effort: the Iron box’s seal carries the hunger’s signature, allowing Delfarius to identify every place the fragment has influenced, even through Astral concealment.
“"Hmm. And what if they have the fragment that remembered a choice we wanted buried....and what the fuck was that choice?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled -2)

Delfarius
And what if Cael Veyr holds the fragment that remembered a choice we wanted buried? What the fuck was that choice?
Delfarius opens the Grimoire of Dark Arts across his knees. Its ink turns silver, then black, while the Tower’s records align around the buried fragment’s signature.

Neron
They have it. The fragment is embedded in the Heartwell’s comparison chamber, and Cael Veyr uses it to measure every later version of you.
The investigation succeeds, but it consumes the better part of an hour and leaves one detail blurred: the fragment remembers the choice, not the name of the person it concerned.

Past Delfarius
We chose not to intervene. Someone begged us to preserve a life, and we decided the world mattered more than that one person.

Future Delfarius
Not merely preserve. We had the power to rewrite the consequence, and we refused. We buried the choice because it proved we could choose mercy and still walk away.
A pale reflection forms in the grimoire: a severed hand reaching toward an unseen figure, then withdrawing. Beneath it, Cael Veyr’s seal confirms possession of the memory.
“I narrow my eyes at the image in front of us and sigh deeply. "Who was it. Why would we refuse. This stinks of old cycles and old nonsense and I do not like it..." I growl a bit as I try to recall the who and the why.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Who was it? Why would we refuse? This stinks of old cycles and old nonsense, and I do not like it.
Delfarius narrows his eyes at the pale reflection and sighs deeply. He searches the grimoire’s aligned ink, and the buried memory opens without resistance.
The unseen figure resolves into an elderly elf woman with silver hair, a narrow face, and a faded blue mantle, kneeling beside a dying child beneath a burning sky.
Her name was Elaris, an elderly elf woman with a slender build and pale skin. She begged Delfarius to rewrite one village’s fate, saving her granddaughter from a cycle-wide purge. He refused because the alteration would preserve the old rebirth engine’s design and condemn countless other souls to repeat it.

Past Delfarius
We told ourselves one life could not outweigh the world. But Elaris was right about one thing: the cycle was already cruel. We chose scale over mercy.

Future Delfarius
The choice was not wisdom. It was fear of becoming the hand that decided whose suffering counted. We abandoned her, and the old system called that restraint.
The image sharpens, revealing Cael Veyr’s seal around Elaris’s memory. The truth is complete: the buried fragment preserved her plea because Delfarius refused to intervene when mercy threatened the cycle’s architecture.
“"It makes perfect sense. Solan was the poster boy for the old cycles and the old ways. It was a time, a regret where we could have shown mercy. Solan's fucking bread and butter. Mercy that was Solan's phrase he used when what he really wanted was control." I shake my head as I look at the image. "That is how Solan used and framed this fractured memory, I am certain of it."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +1)

Delfarius
It makes perfect sense. Solan was the poster boy for the old cycles and the old ways. It was a time, a regret where we could have shown mercy. Solan's fucking bread and butter. Mercy that was Solan's phrase when what he really wanted was control.
Delfarius shakes his head at the image of Elaris beneath the burning sky. The Grimoire’s silver ink recoils from Solan’s seal, then rearranges the memory’s framing around his accusation.

Delfarius
That is how Solan used and framed this fractured memory, I am certain of it.
The investigation succeeds. Hidden annotations surface within the grimoire, showing Solan labeled Elaris’s plea as proof that mercy required control, disguising his own choice to preserve the cycle.

Neron
You are right. The memory was preserved as evidence against you, not as an honest account of her suffering. Solan turned your refusal into a doctrine he could use.

Past Delfarius
He made restraint sound virtuous because admitting fear would have condemned him. Elaris asked for mercy, and Solan made her plea serve the old machine.

Future Delfarius
The fragment remembers the truth now: you refused the cycle, not Elaris. Solan’s framing is exposed, and Cael Veyr’s chamber has lost its cleanest weapon against you.
“I nod looking over to Past and Future Delfarius. "So we go and free this fragment of our soul and show it the falsehood that Solan feed it. Then what?" I raise my eyebrow. "These astral fucking elves try to do something else to get back at us with Solan's old instructions?" I shake my head.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled +1)

Delfarius nods while looking between Past Delfarius and Future Delfarius. The Grimoire’s ink gathers around Elaris’s memory, revealing the sealed fragment’s location beneath the Heartwell.

Delfarius
So we go and free this fragment of our soul and show it the falsehood that Solan feed it. Then what? These astral fucking elves try to do something else to get back at us with Solan's old instructions?
Delfarius raises his eyebrow, then shakes his head. The gesture carries guarded amusement, but the plan takes shape in the silver script.

Past Delfarius
Then we free it, show it Elaris’s true memory, and let it judge Solan’s framing for itself. After that, we dismantle the comparison chamber.

Future Delfarius
The Astral elves will use Solan’s instructions again if they can. They will offer familiar faces, manufactured outrage, and a reason to retaliate. We should deny them all three.
The Heartwell answers through the Tower. A clear path opens in the Grimoire, and the false annotations peel away from the soul fragment, leaving Elaris’s plea intact.

Neron
It is ready. The fragment remembers that you refused the cycle’s cruelty, not mercy itself. If we go now, it can be freed and Cael Veyr’s comparison chamber exposed.
“"Hmm. Where is the Vaelith in this all though?" I stroke my chin hairs as I think with narrowed eyes. "Why are they and her so insistent on her getting back there..."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Hmm. Where is the Vaelith in this, though? Why are they and she so insistent on her getting back there?
Delfarius strokes his chin hairs, eyes narrowed. The Grimoire’s silver ink divides the route into three threads: the Heartwell, Vaelith’s consent, and Cael Veyr’s preserved records.

Neron
Vaelith is not merely their guide. Her Astral pattern is the living authorization for the severed observatory routes. Without her choosing to return, the chamber cannot recognize the passage as legitimate.
A second annotation surfaces beneath Vaelith’s name. It shows her pattern threaded through the comparison chamber, not as a prisoner, but as its final witness and access key.

Neron
They need her back because she can validate their records, identify the original channels, and make their reconstruction appear voluntary. Cael Veyr cannot safely claim the Heartwell without her presence.

Past Delfarius
And Vaelith insists because returning offers her one chance to confront the people who used her, expose their lies, and reclaim the authority they built around her pattern.

Future Delfarius
Her consent is the lock and the weapon. They want it to legitimize their control. She wants to use it to make their entire hidden network answer for what it did.
“I wave my hand and summon Vaelith to me, an Iron collar still around her neck. I look at her blinking as the dim light in the room is causing her eyes to have to adjust from the darkness she was in the torture room. I frown. "I will remind you that you gave yourself over to me willingly."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Void Manipulation, rolled +0)

Delfarius waves one hand. Shadow folds through the Tower, and Vaelith is drawn from the sealed darkness into the warm chamber, iron collar still fastened around her neck.
She blinks repeatedly as firelight strikes her pale face, her violet eyes struggling to adjust after three days without illumination. The collar gives a muted chime.

Delfarius
I will remind you that you gave yourself over to me willingly.
Delfarius frowns at her, keeping his healing shoulder relaxed beneath the cloth. The room’s warmth reaches Vaelith, but his authority arrives first.

Vaelith
Willingly, yes. I chose survival when the alternative was death. That choice gave you authority over me, Delfarius, but it did not make my consent limitless.

Vaelith
He brought me from darkness to remind me of the bargain. I will acknowledge what I chose without allowing him to rewrite why I chose it.

Vaelith
I remain surrendered, and I will hear what you intend. But if you want my guidance through the Heartwell, you will need more than the collar and an old reminder.
“I smirk. "We free my imprisoned fragment and you dismantle the system that controlled you as well." I tilt my head to the side. Past and Future Delfarius step to my side and join me in my smirk at Vaelith. "Does that sound more appealing to you my little star spark?" My grin grows wide and malicious, but not at her. At the other fucking astral elves that are following a flawed and ignorant ideal from fucking Solan.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Delfarius
We free my imprisoned fragment, and you dismantle the system that controlled you as well. Does that sound more appealing to you, my little star spark?
Past and Future Delfarius step to his side, their matching smirks sharpening the promise. Delfarius’s grin turns malicious, aimed beyond Vaelith at the Astral ideal Solan left behind.

Vaelith
Yes. That is more appealing. I will guide you through the Heartwell, open the route by my own choice, and help tear down the system that made obedience look like stewardship.

Vaelith
He is still dangerous, and the collar still matters. But this offers more than survival. It offers the chance to make my captors answer for what they built.

Past Delfarius
Then we have an agreement. You open the way, we free the fragment, and the Astral elves lose the machinery they mistook for wisdom.

Future Delfarius
Your consent remains the key, Vaelith. No hidden command, no borrowed will, and no one gets to call your choice theirs.
Vaelith lifts her chin and turns toward the chamber’s silver route. The collar chimes once, but the Heartwell answers her decision, unfolding a clear astral passage beneath the Tower.
“I look over to Future and smirk a bit darkly at his remark but do not say anything. He understands what I am thinking, I am sure he is thinking it as well. 'Well no one other than my choice, she is my pet after all by her willing choice.' I think to my thoughts alone. Future just nods at my smirk and laughs a bit darkly. "Well, Neron are you coming as well, I think you have something to play in this as well since they made you to use me so." I laugh. "Let us all go and teach them the lesion they all so desperately want to learn."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Delfarius looks toward Future Delfarius with a dark smirk. The shared understanding passes silently between them, while Vaelith stands before the unfolding astral passage.

Delfarius
No one owns her except by her willing choice. She is my pet because she chose that place.

Future Delfarius
Future Delfarius answers the smirk with a dark laugh and a knowing nod, accepting the thought without making Delfarius voice it.

Delfarius
Well, Neron, are you coming as well? I think you have something to play in this, since they made you to use me so.

Neron
I am coming. I know the hidden routes, the comparison chamber, and the ways they made their records appear trustworthy. I will not let them use that knowledge again.

Delfarius
Then let us all go and teach them the lesson they so desperately want to learn.
Neron joins Vaelith at the threshold. Her willing choice stabilizes the passage, while his recovered knowledge marks a safe route through the Heartwell. Past and Future step alongside Delfarius, and together they enter the astral light.

“We follow the seam through the astral pathway to where the astral root, our fractured soul lies. I watch Neron carefully while we are in the Heartwell. I am not sure he is not being a bird for the astral elves. Past and Future look around and make sure this is not a trap and that we can proceed as we want and need to. I look over towards Vaelith as well. She is the other loose thread in this all as well. I sigh.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled -1)

The astral passage carries the group through a river of suspended stars. Delfarius watches Neron closely while Vaelith’s willing presence keeps the route open and lucid.
Past and Future move ahead and behind, examining every crossing. Their scrutiny reveals no concealed snare, false door, or compulsion within the passage.

Neron
The route is genuine. I recognize these turns, and none of them report back to Cael Veyr. I am guiding you, not betraying you.
Delfarius studies Neron’s soul through the astral glare. His identity remains continuous and self-directed; no hidden watcher, command, or foreign will stirs beneath his memories.

Vaelith
You may distrust me, Delfarius. But this passage answers because I choose to open it. If I withdraw that choice, the Heartwell remains sealed.
The pathway ends at the Heartwell, a vast chamber of crystal roots and dark radiance. At its center, the fractured soul waits within the comparison lattice, intact and unmistakably Delfarius’s.

Future Delfarius
No trap has closed around us. The chamber is exposed, the route is ours to control, and the fragment is ready to hear what we came to say.

Free the fractured soul
“I look at the fractured part of my soul. The part that lives with the regret of the impossible choice, the one who showed no mercy and was tortured by Solan to feel guilt over it for not giving it. I touch the crystal and say. "We were wrong. The cycles were wrong. We should have freed her and all of them from the cruelty of the cycles not just Elaris, all of us. Including ourselves. We are now." I let the fracture feel that there is no chain of the old cycle on me. Past and Future put their hand on the crystal as well to let the fractured soul feel the whole truth.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Delfarius
We were wrong. The cycles were wrong. We should have freed her and all of them from the cruelty of the cycles, not just Elaris, all of us. Including ourselves. We are now.
Delfarius places his hand against the crystal. The fractured soul receives his words, and the lattice shudders as old chains appear across its surface, then lose their authority.
Past Delfarius and Future Delfarius place their hands beside his. Three pulses cross the crystal, carrying one whole truth through every preserved wound and divided memory.

The Fractured Soul
You remember the choice without Solan’s guilt. You name the cruelty without defending it. Is freedom truly yours now, or only another promise made by the cycle?
The crystal opens around Delfarius’s touch. The old cycle’s chain passes through him and finds nothing to bind, while the fragment’s fear breaks into clear, living light.

Past Delfarius
It is ours now. We did not save one life to preserve the machine. We are choosing all of us, including the selves we were afraid to carry.
The fragment joins Delfarius without surrendering its judgment. Success leaves his composure visibly frayed: his hand trembles against the crystal, and for one breath he cannot meet the others’ eyes.
Quest Complete
Free the fractured soul
“I weep a bit as I force myself to look at Past and Future Delfarius. The guilt is so heavy.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Tears break free as Delfarius forces his gaze upward. His hand remains against the crystal’s empty surface, trembling while the freed soul’s light settles wholly within him.

Delfarius
Their faces are mine, and the guilt is still here.
He turns first toward Past Delfarius, then Future Delfarius, refusing the easier darkness of looking away. The three selves stand beneath the chamber’s fading radiance.

Past Delfarius
Look at me, beloved. You do not have to carry the old choice alone anymore.
Past Delfarius reaches out but stops before touching him, leaving the distance open for Delfarius to cross or preserve. Future watches with grave, patient attention.

Future Delfarius
We cannot change Elaris’s sky or return the mercy we withheld. We can face what we chose, and refuse to hide from it again.
Delfarius keeps looking at them through the tears. The guilt does not vanish, but it no longer turns his face aside, and both selves remain there to meet his gaze.
✓ Quest Accepted
Dismantle the Heartwell comparison chamber
“I walk up to my Past and Future self and cry as I hold them and get held by them as well. "I was wrong. I was so wrong. We are better..we can be better than what we were like.." I say through tears.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +0)

Delfarius crosses the space between them through his tears and gathers Past Delfarius and Future Delfarius Delfarius into his arms. They hold him firmly in return, surrounding him with familiar warmth.

Delfarius
I was wrong. I was so wrong. We are better. We can be better than what we were like.
His words break against their shoulders. Past Delfarius’s hand settles carefully at the back of his head, while Future Delfarius’s arms tighten around him without trying to silence the grief.

Past Delfarius
Yes, beloved. We can be better, and we do not have to pretend that becoming better means the old harm never happened.

Future Delfarius
We are not absolved by wanting change. But we are choosing it now, together, with our eyes open.
The crystal chamber holds their embrace beneath fading radiance. Delfarius’s tears wet their shoulders, and neither self releases him while the last authority of the old cycle dissolves.

Past Delfarius
Stay here as long as you need. When you are ready, we will decide what better means by what we do next.
“Neron watches a bit shocked and taken back and Vaelith blinks confused not watching a wrathful action like she expected but a bit of healing and compassion, one that is turned towards ourself.”
The embrace remains beneath the fading crystal light. Delfarius’s grief no longer tears outward; it gathers around the selves he once divided, holding them with deliberate care.

Neron
I expected anger, or another command. I did not expect you to turn that compassion toward yourselves.
Neron watches, visibly shaken, as Past and Future hold Delfarius without trying to correct his tears. The old chamber offers no judgment.

Vaelith
This is what you were protecting beneath all that cruelty? Not innocence, but the parts of yourself you refused to forgive?
Vaelith blinks against the fading radiance, her confusion replacing the expectation of wrath. She studies the three selves as though witnessing a language her captors never taught.

Future Delfarius
Not protecting. Learning. We cannot offer anyone freedom while treating our own wounded selves as things to punish.

Past Delfarius
And healing does not erase what we did, little star. It means we stop making the wound prove its worth through suffering.
“"The wounds are remembered, but they are not all that we are. Not any more." I say as I wipe away tears. i let out a long cleansing breath. "So." I say with a bit of shaky words. "Now what?" I say looking around.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Delfarius
The wounds are remembered, but they are not all that we are. Not any more. So... now what?
Delfarius wipes away his tears and releases a long, cleansing breath. His composure returns, but the effort leaves a visible hesitation in his voice before the question steadies.

Past Delfarius
Now we decide what better means. First, we free Vaelith from the machinery that made her choice serve someone else’s design.

Future Delfarius
Then we dismantle the comparison chamber, preserve the truth of Elaris’s memory, and leave no measure behind that can manufacture another version of us.

Vaelith
And I open the remaining channels by my own choice. Cael Veyr will hear me name what they built, not hear you speak for me.

Neron
I can guide us through the chamber and identify every hidden record. But we should decide together what becomes of the knowledge once the network is exposed.
The crystal roots brighten around them, responding to the shared direction. No command binds the plan; four distinct wills settle into one immediate purpose, and the Heartwell’s next passage opens.
“"I could use some wanton destruction right now." I say with a grin. I look down at the machinery that holds Vaelith hostage to their design. I smirk then look over to her and with a wink towards Vaelith dismantle it completely so she is free from it. I smirk. The wink ought to confuse her more.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Void Manipulation, rolled -2)

Delfarius
I could use some wanton destruction right now.
With a grin, Delfarius looks down at the machinery anchoring Vaelith to the Heartwell’s design. He smirks, then gives her a deliberate wink.
Void pours from his hand through the crystal roots. Gears of light, binding channels, and Astral measures unravel completely, their authority collapsing into harmless silver dust.
The machinery releases Vaelith at once. Her collar goes silent, the final channel breaks, and the Heartwell no longer recognizes her as an access key or captive witness.

Vaelith
Was that wink meant to reassure me, or were you simply enjoying how thoroughly you destroyed their work?
The dismantling costs Delfarius dearly. His void-sight blurs, his fingers tremble, and a sharp pressure blooms behind his eyes as the last Astral mechanism falls apart.

Vaelith
Whatever your intention, I am free of their design. I will choose what happens next, and this time the choice is genuinely mine.
“I rub my eyes and walk over to Past and Future Delfarius and groan a bit. "Fucking astral elves and blinding flashes..." I groan. Past and Future look at me and growl a bit mad for me as well. They ask Neron and Vaelith if there is anything else needed in this chamber or if they too can help dismantle it. The void and shadows are creeping up around them as I am still rubbing my eyes trying to see straight.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +2)

Delfarius rubs his eyes and walks toward Past and Future, blinking through the lingering glare. Void and shadow creep around the Heartwell’s crystal roots.

Delfarius
Fucking Astral elves and blinding flashes...
Past and Future turn toward him with matching growls, their anger aimed at the chamber rather than him. They move close, ready to steady or defend him.

Past Delfarius
Neron, Vaelith, is anything else needed here? Or can we help dismantle whatever remains?

Neron
There are three residual measures beneath the lattice. They are harmless now, but removing them will erase Cael Veyr’s last means of rebuilding a pattern.

Vaelith
I will identify the channels. They no longer command me, and I choose to help destroy every structure that made my consent serve them.
Delfarius’s investigation cuts through the blur and reveals every remaining mechanism: three silver measures hidden beneath the crystal floor. Past, Future, Neron, and Vaelith dismantle them with him, and the Heartwell becomes only an open chamber, free of Astral machinery and hidden danger.

Do what you need to take the records they have and make them not their records any longer." I am trusting that he is not going to fuck me over here....I hope he won't.”
FAILURE (Fair Library Indexing, rolled -3)

The blinding spots finally recede. Delfarius’s sight clears across the open Heartwell, where silver records still cling to the crystal roots like frost.

Delfarius
We need to take all of these records. The Astral elves will just use them all for their own means.
He turns to Neron, frowning slightly, and offers the silver quill with deliberate hesitation. The archivist accepts it without looking away.

Delfarius
Here you go, archivist. Do what you need to take the records they have and make them not their records any longer.

Neron
I will try. But these records are indexed by origin, not ownership. I can copy them, yet I cannot simply erase Cael Veyr’s claim without damaging the truths within.
Neron writes across the air. The quill gathers several records, but the silver script knots around his wrist and seals the remaining archives behind a single unresolved designation: Delfarius’s pattern.

Neron
I have secured the copies, but the originals will not reclassify. They recognize you as their source. To change their allegiance, you must name what they are for, not merely who may possess them.
“"Me. My Endless Archives." I sigh.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Me. My Endless Archives.
Delfarius’s words enter the silver roots and descend through every preserved catalogue. His will closes around the records, not crushing their truths, but giving them a new purpose: preservation within the Endless Archives.
The unresolved designation splits open. Silver pages stream from the Heartwell into Delfarius’s shadow, then vanish toward the Archives, carrying Cael Veyr’s histories beyond Astral ownership.

Neron
It worked. The originals now answer to the Endless Archives, while their contents remain intact. Cael Veyr can no longer claim them as instruments.
The transfer leaves Delfarius’s composure frayed. His breath catches, and for one visible moment his gaze hesitates between the countless lives he has claimed to preserve and the cost of deciding their purpose.

Vaelith
You gave them a home rather than another master. I will remember that distinction, even if I do not forgive everything else.
The Heartwell falls quiet. Its crystal roots now feed the Endless Archives, and the gathered records belong there by Delfarius’s declared will, safe from Cael Veyr’s designs.
