The sealed observatory door opens at last. A violet-lit threshold reveals Morghain beside her still pool, and she steps through as the copper sigil settles into a quiet glow.

Morghain pauses beside Chance, her short figure outlined by distant starlight. Her dark hair catches blue radiance, and her bright violet eyes study the demi-god with careful curiosity.

Morghain

Morghain

So this is Chance. I had expected mischief. I had not expected the Tower to announce him before I arrived.

Chance

Chance

And I expected a goddess with sharper questions. It seems we have both been adequately warned.

The Tower’s silver lines withdraw from the black floor, leaving no circle around Chance and no barrier between the three of them. The observatory door remains open behind Morghain.

Morghain

Morghain

I am Morghain. I want to meet you as yourself, not as an answer to anything Delfarius has failed to explain.

Chance

Chance

Then we begin honestly. I am Chance, and I am here because I chose to meet both of you. What happens next belongs to all three of us.

“I give a wry smirk to the audience and think to my thoughts alone, 'Cock blocked by my Tower again.' I sigh loudly and just watch them talk with each other like I am not here.”

Delfarius

Delfarius

Cock blocked by my Tower again.

Delfarius gives the unseen audience a wry smirk, then sighs loudly and settles back, watching Morghain and Chance as though he is not standing between them. The Tower’s open observatory remains quietly attentive.

Morghain

Morghain

You have already accepted his invitation, but I would rather hear what you want from this meeting than infer it from his expression.

Chance

Chance

I want no throne, no binding, and no role assigned to me by either of you. I want to see whether the three of us can be honest without turning honesty into a trial.

Morghain studies Chance for a long moment, then glances toward Delfarius without inviting him into the exchange. Delfarius remains silent, wearing his smirk while the Tower’s violet lamps glow around them.

Morghain

Morghain

Then we begin there. No tests, no hidden obligations, and no assumption that affection must become an arrangement before it has had room to breathe.

“I clear my throat towards the kitchen. Marrec looks out and sees us all standing there. "Bring us some refreshments please. Some of the leftover muffins and buns if they are not too stale and wine for my guests and sparkling juice for me." I gesture towards a table with three seats, and I wait until they have both sat to sit down. My voice has returned to normal. Have my eyes I wonder to myself and thoughts alone.”

Marrec, bring us some refreshments, please. Leftover muffins and buns, if they are not too stale, wine for my guests, and sparkling juice for me.

Delfarius clears his throat toward the kitchen. Marrec looks out and finds Delfarius, Morghain, and Chance standing together before the three-seat table.

Marrec Voss

Marrec Voss

At once, my lord. I will see that your guests receive what you requested.

Delfarius gestures toward the table and waits. Morghain and Chance take their seats first, accepting the arrangement without protest, and Delfarius sits only after them.

Delfarius

Delfarius

My voice is clear again. Are my eyes?

Marrec returns with the remaining muffins and buns, wine for the guests, and sparkling juice for Delfarius. He serves each place carefully, and the formal hosting quietly makes the evening his responsibility to maintain.

Morghain

Morghain

Thank you, Marrec. This is a gracious beginning, and I appreciate being welcomed as a guest rather than treated as an answer to someone else's question.

“I raise my eyebrow and look at my reflection in a knife at the table. 'My eyes are back to normal. Thank me.' I think to myself for a moment. My two guests just see me looking at myself in the cutlery. Chance might know why I am but I am hoping he won't say why. They might remark on that or say something to get to know each other as I just look at myself.”

Delfarius raises one eyebrow and borrows a table knife from the cutlery, angling its polished blade until his reflection swims across the steel. His eyes stare back in their familiar pale blue.

Delfarius

Delfarius

My eyes are back to normal. Thank me.

Morghain watches the inspection over her untouched wine, bright violet eyes narrowing with amused curiosity. Chance notices the reason at once, but keeps his expression pleasantly unreadable.

Chance

Chance

I see the eyes have returned to their usual color. I will be kind enough not to ask what happened in the meantime.

Chance lifts his cup with exaggerated innocence. Morghain glances from him to Delfarius’s reflection, recognizing the deliberate concealment without pressing against it.

Morghain

Morghain

Then let us begin with an easier question. What should I know about Chance that he would not think to volunteer himself?

Marrec quietly replaces the knife beside the plate and withdraws toward the kitchen. Across the table, the two guests turn their attention to one another, leaving Delfarius’s private victory undisturbed.

“Chance looks at me with a smirk. He is seeing what I mean by her talking like it is a prophecy. He responds to her question. I let my glance go towards the kitchen. What is Marrec doing? Is he sulking because I am not giving him attention after I came back. I am slightly amused as Morghain and Chance talk.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Chance

Chance

What should you know? I am charming, unlucky, and far less harmless when my sister stands beside me. I also dislike being treated as a solution to someone else's mystery.

Chance gives Morghain a knowing smirk, clearly recognizing exactly what she means by speaking like a prophecy. His answer is playful, but the boundary beneath it is plainly offered.

Delfarius's glance drifts toward the kitchen. Marrec stands arranging the serving tray and rinsing the cups, moving with quiet precision rather than sulking or seeking notice.

Marrec pauses only long enough to confirm that the guests have what they need. His posture is reserved, but there is no wounded display in it, only obedience and careful self-containment.

Morghain

Morghain

That is useful to know. I have no interest in making you a solution, Chance. I would rather discover what you choose when no one has written the ending for you.

The exchange continues with easy tension while Delfarius watches, slightly amused. In the kitchen, Marrec resumes his work without looking back, leaving the gathering its privacy.

“I take a sip of my sparkling juice and smirk over the lip. Chance responds to Morghain's question while watching me play with the copper coin he gave me.”

Delfarius takes a slow sip of sparkling juice and smirks over the rim, turning Chance’s copper coin lazily across his fingers while the two guests watch.

Chance

Chance

You should also know that I notice when someone plays with a gift while pretending not to listen. He is listening now, of course, but he prefers the coin to confess it for him.

Morghain

Morghain

Then I should ask the coin what it has learned. Has he told you anything about himself that he has not told me?

The copper coin rolls over Delfarius’s knuckles and settles briefly against his thumb. Chance follows its motion with amused attention, making no attempt to reclaim it.

Chance

Chance

It has learned that he likes keeping luck close, but not letting luck decide for him. That is more revealing than most confessions, and considerably less embarrassing.

Morghain

Morghain

A useful answer. I will remember that neither the coin nor its keeper speaks for him. Whatever he chooses to share, he must choose it himself.

The room settles into easy warmth again. The coin completes another quiet turn across Delfarius’s fingers, while Chance’s grin and Morghain’s bright eyes remain fixed on him.

“"I like keeping the only gift I have received without asking close to me. If luck happens to be attached to it, that is just a convenient coincidence." I say with a smirk as I put the coin away in my personal belongings. "But you two were getting to know each other, not me." I take a sip of my sparking juice looking at them both with a sparkle in my eyes.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Delfarius

Delfarius

I like keeping the only gift I have received without asking close to me. If luck happens to be attached to it, that is just a convenient coincidence.

With a smirk, Delfarius slips the copper coin into his personal belongings. The small motion ends its lazy confession between them, leaving the conversation open to his redirection.

Delfarius

Delfarius

But you two were getting to know each other, not me.

Delfarius takes a sip of sparkling juice and looks between them, a bright sparkle in his eyes making the deflection feel playful rather than dismissive.

Morghain

Morghain

A graceful escape, though I suspect you are still listening. Very well, Chance, tell me something you would want me to understand without turning it into a performance.

Chance

Chance

I want you to know that I can be serious when it matters. I choose mischief because it is mine, not because I have nothing else to offer.

Morghain considers Chance over the rim of her wine, while Delfarius watches with quiet amusement. The exchange settles into genuine curiosity, no longer requiring him to carry it.

“'They both would be so wonderful on my silk bed beside me naked.' I think to my thoughts alone as they talk about themselves with each other. I let out a "Hmm." that sounds very pleased and aroused without me meaning two in between their conversation with each other. They both look to me after that and remark on what they think it meant.”

Delfarius

They would both be wonderful on my silk bed beside me, naked.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Hmm.

The pleased sound slips between their words, warmer and more revealing than Delfarius intended. Morghain turns first, and Chance follows her gaze across the table.

Morghain

Morghain

That was a very pleased sound. Your attention appears to have wandered somewhere considerably more intimate than our conversation.

Chance

Chance

I heard appreciation, though I will not claim to know its target. Was that for the conversation, or for some private thought you are keeping to yourself?

Neither guest answers the thought Delfarius kept private. Morghain’s amused curiosity and Chance’s bright restraint leave the meaning open, while both wait to see whether he chooses to explain.

“I smirk and lean in closer to them both. "i was just admiring the conversation from a different angle." I laugh shortly. "I like mischief when it leads to a further goal. If it is amusing while being greatly useful all the better." I take a sip. 'I can already see them both without their clothing kissing my bare chest and still keep up with what they are saying.' I think smugly to my thoughts alone.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +0)

Delfarius

Delfarius

I was just admiring the conversation from a different angle. I like mischief when it leads to a further goal. If it is amusing while being greatly useful, all the better.

Delfarius leans closer across the table, his smirk sharpening as he raises his cup. His explanation lands lightly, disguising the more intimate admiration beneath a polished turn of phrase.

Morghain

Morghain

Useful mischief is usually the only kind worth defending. I approve of the principle, though I suspect your definition of useful may be dangerously broad.

Chance

Chance

And if the mischief is amusing enough, you expect us to forgive the danger afterward. That is a persuasive strategy, Delfarius, especially when you look at us like that.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I can already see them both without their clothing, kissing my bare chest, and still keep up with everything they are saying.

Delfarius takes a slow sip, keeping the thought private while his eyes move between them. Morghain’s amused curiosity meets Chance’s bright, knowing grin, and neither mistakes his composure for innocence.

Chance

Chance

Now I am curious what other angles you have been admiring. Perhaps you should explain, before Morghain and I invent answers more entertaining than the truth.

“I lean back in my chair and just laugh loudly throwing my head back.”

Delfarius leans back in his chair and throws his head toward the ceiling, laughter bursting freely through the observatory. The sound rolls beneath the violet lamps, bright with mischief and entirely unrestrained.

Chance

Chance

There it is. I was wondering how long you could admire our conversation without making the room suffer for it.

Chance laughs with him, shaking his head as the sound echoes across the black stone. Morghain watches Delfarius with bright amusement, her guarded expression softening without surrendering its caution.

Morghain

Morghain

You look entirely too pleased with yourself. I suppose I should be grateful that your latest revelation has produced laughter rather than another investigation.

Delfarius’s laughter continues a moment longer, then settles into a satisfied grin as he lowers his head. The refreshments remain untouched, and nothing in the Tower interrupts the easy warmth between them.

Chance

Chance

Keep laughing, Delfarius. I like you best when the mischief is honest enough to make you forget who is watching.

The moment holds without demand or consequence. Morghain’s smile joins Chance’s, and the observatory becomes, for once, exactly as peaceful as Delfarius’s laughter makes it.

Delfarius

Delfarius

So, Morghain, has your curiosity been sated in what I saw in Chance here?

He takes a measured drink, keeping his gaze moving between them. The playful question leaves room for Morghain’s curiosity without turning her into a problem to solve.

Morghain

Morghain

It is. I understand Chance more clearly now, and I understand why you wanted me to meet him directly. His mischief is part of his nature, not a reason to discard the possibility of knowing him.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Chance, do you see why I was a bit upset with our earlier conversation, and why I readily took your offered advice to talk with her?

Chance

Chance

I do. You thought Morghain hated you, and that hurt because you cared about her. I advised you to speak with her because her guarded nature deserved patience and honesty, not abandonment. You took my advice because you wanted to work on what mattered instead of throwing it away.

“"Huh." I think over the terms in my mind. "Throuple? Triad? Or are I just to just date both of you separate from each other?" I smirk as my directness might take them back a bit. If my directness has shocked them a bit I will let out a small laugh at it as they respond to what I said.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Delfarius

Delfarius

Huh. Throuple? Triad? Or are we just dating both of you separately from each other?

The directness briefly stills the observatory. Morghain’s violet eyes widen, while Chance blinks once before a startled laugh escapes him.

Delfarius lets out a small laugh, watching their reactions with an unmistakably pleased smirk.

Morghain

Morghain

That is remarkably direct. I am open to exploring a triad, but only if we build it as three relationships, not as an arrangement centered on your wishes alone. I would also accept dating you separately while we discover what feels honest.

Chance

Chance

I am interested in both possibilities. A triad sounds wonderfully complicated, and separate dates leave room for each bond to remain its own thing. I want choice, honesty, and no assumption that agreeing to one moment commits me to everything afterward.

Morghain reaches across the table and offers Chance her hand. He accepts it after a brief glance toward Delfarius, and the three-way question becomes a shared possibility rather than a demand for an immediate shape.

“I look at Morghain reaching for and holding Chance's hand. 'Huh well that is unexpected. I hope I didn't just fuck this up for myself and those two fall in love with each other instead of me.' I think to my thoughts alone. I have a delighted expression on my face for them both. I look them both in their eyes and smirk. "I think I would like to go forward which ever way you two would prefer. Separate dates, dates with all three of us. If you two want to spend time without me." Then we will choose freely, without rushing to name what this becomes. I want time with you, time with Chance, and time with both of you. None of those choices diminishes the others.

Chance

Chance

I agree. I would enjoy discovering what Morghain and I are like together, and what all three of us become. I am choosing that freely, and no one is being replaced.

“"Delightful." I say with a small laugh that kind of shows a bit more than I mean it to in regards to me being a bit concerned. I drink my juice down in one gulp and laugh a bit taken back myself. "Excuse me, for a moment." I say as I walk to the kitchen with those two behind me still holding hands. 'Chance did not mention wanting to see me alone without Morghain. Delfarius laughs softly, revealing a flicker of concern before he can hide it. He takes the sparkling juice served for him and drains it in one gulp, coughing once at his own abruptness.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Excuse me, for a moment.

He rises and crosses toward the kitchen alone. His hip catches the table corner hard enough to leave a sharp bruise, but he keeps moving and reaches the kitchen without hesitation. Morghain and Chance remain seated behind him, their hands still joined.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Chance did not mention wanting to see me alone without Morghain. Is he fucking with me, or is he honestly more interested in her than me?

Warm lamplight fills the kitchen, carrying the scents of cooling pastry and rinsed cups. Delfarius stands privately among the counters while the observatory’s conversation remains beyond the doorway.

“I walk up to Marrec out of sight of them both in the observatory and pull his face up to mine and give him a deep kiss. "When they leave, we are going to have some fun, yes?" I say looking him in the eyes. It is not a question. It is a demand.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled -2)

Delfarius crosses the kitchen and catches Marrec before he can turn. He lifts the former noble’s face, then presses a deep kiss to his mouth, leaving no room for hesitation.

Delfarius

Delfarius

When they leave, we are going to have some fun, yes?

Marrec goes still beneath the demand, then steadies himself against the counter. His eyes remain on Delfarius’s as the observatory’s distant voices continue beyond the doorway.

Marrec Voss

Marrec Voss

Yes, my lord. When they leave, I will be ready for whatever you choose to permit.

The answer satisfies the demand, but the cost settles plainly between them: Marrec’s compliance is certain, while his trust retreats behind formal obedience. He will no longer mistake command for tenderness.

Marrec Voss

Marrec Voss

I have agreed because he demanded it. If he wants anything more than obedience, he will have to say so himself.

Marrec lowers his gaze only after Delfarius releases him, then returns to arranging the cups. Beyond the kitchen, Chance and Morghain remain unaware, their conversation continuing while the promised evening waits behind the door.

“I lean closer to him and answer his thoughts quietly to just him. "I need your obedience, not your faith. Remember?"”

SUCCESS (Legendary Intimidation, rolled +0)

Delfarius

I need your obedience, not your faith. Remember?

Delfarius leans close, keeping his voice low enough that the observatory cannot claim the words. Marrec’s hands pause over the cups, and his attention fixes entirely on him.

Marrec Voss

Marrec Voss

I remember, my lord. Obedience is what you require, and I will not pretend it is faith.

The answer leaves no uncertainty in Marrec’s posture. He lowers his gaze, not in worship, but in deliberate acknowledgment of the command that governs his place here.

Marrec Voss

Marrec Voss

He has reminded me of the terms, and I understand them clearly. I owe obedience, not belief.

Marrec resumes arranging the cups with steadier hands. Beyond the kitchen, Chance and Morghain continue speaking, unaware of the quiet correction that has settled the room behind them.

“I hold out my empty glass to Marrec and wait for him to fill it before putting back on the charming face and going back to Morghain and Chance waiting at the table. "And what were you two talking about while I was away getting a refill? Hmm?" I say with a smirk. I wait for them to answer.”

Delfarius

Delfarius

And what were you two talking about while I was away getting a refill? Hmm?

Delfarius settles into his seat and lifts the refilled glass, his smirk inviting rather than demanding. Morghain and Chance exchange a brief glance before turning their attention fully toward him.

Morghain

Morghain

We were speaking about what we might discover separately, and what all three of us might choose together. Chance was clear that no possibility should become an obligation.

Chance

Chance

And Morghain was making certain I understood that curiosity is welcome, but assumptions are not. We agreed to let each connection speak for itself before naming anything larger.

“I take a sip and think out loud to the room. "Well whatever is ahead for the three of us, our calendars will certainly be full." I say with a small charming laugh.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius

Delfarius

Well, whatever is ahead for the three of us, our calendars will certainly be full.

Delfarius takes a sip of sparkling juice and lets out a small, charming laugh. The remark settles lightly over the table, turning uncertainty into an invitation rather than a demand.

Chance

Chance

Full calendars sound dangerous. I accept the possibility, provided each appointment remains something we choose rather than something your Tower schedules for us.

Morghain

Morghain

I like the sound of full calendars, though I will not mistake your charm for a promise of constant access. We can make room for one another without filling every hour.

Their answers are warm, but the cost of Delfarius’s easy charm becomes clear: both now expect him to honor the possibility he has named, and neither will accept it as empty flirtation.

Chance

Chance

So I will consider that a charmingly vague commitment to make time for us. I will not demand a date, but I will remember you said it.

Morghain

Morghain

And I will remember it fondly, without turning it into a chain. Now, shall we decide what fills the first empty space?

“I look at Chance a bit truly upset. "I wouldn't dare assume that your time is to be scheduled like a court hearing. If you want to see me, either of you are welcomed to come here." Chance glances to Morghain, measuring her reaction without turning the answer into a performance. His smile remains easy, but his posture carries deliberate sincerity.

Chance

Chance

I would like to know you without Delfarius translating every silence between us. And I would like to know what you think of me when he is not watching.

Morghain

Morghain

Then I will plan an evening for us. No examination, no hidden purpose, and no promise that either of us must become something afterward.

Morghain offers Chance a small, genuine smile. He returns it, and the space between them settles into mutual curiosity rather than competition.

“'Hmm'kay.' I think to my thoughts alone. "Well as delightful as this impromptu meeting was between us all was, I do have to ask you both to kindly leave. There are some." I pause feeling the weariness in my Void sight in my power. "Matters I need to take care of alone." I look to them both and smile charmingly at them both. And I will take mine. No tests, no hidden hooks, and no unlucky farewell unless you ask for one. We will speak again when you are ready.

The Tower opens two separate thresholds, violet starlight for Morghain and warm golden fortune for Chance. They depart through their chosen doorways, leaving the observatory private and Delfarius’s next matters entirely his own.

“I close their doorways to my Obsidian Tower and growl a bit to myself. "Fuck."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled -3)

An Honest Beginning

Delfarius closes Morghain’s violet doorway and Chance’s golden threshold with a sharp turn of his hand. Both portals seal cleanly, leaving the observatory private once more.

The spell catches on the Tower’s threshold wards. Violet and gold collapse into a single black seam, and the effort leaves a numb, aching line across Delfarius’s casting fingers.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Fuck.

The word rolls through the empty observatory and fades beneath the lamps. The sealed doorways offer no reply, while the black seam contracts into ordinary stone.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The Tower can wait. I need a moment without anyone asking what comes next.

Delfarius lowers his hand and flexes the affected fingers once. The magic has obeyed, but the threshold wards will remain dim until the casting mark naturally cools.

“I go to the upper infirmary in my tower and lay down on the basalt table letting it's healing magic and runes course through me healing the disrupted void within me and the minor bruise on my hip. Delfarius reaches the upper infirmary and lowers himself onto the basalt table. Runes awaken beneath him, their cool radiance threading through the disrupted Void and easing the bruise at his hip.

Healing magic moves through him in slow, precise currents. The black burn along his casting fingers fades, his Void settles into a steady pulse, and the ache in his hip loosens beneath the runes.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The Tower knows exactly where the damage is.

For several quiet hours, the infirmary holds only the hum of basalt and the measured rhythm of Delfarius’s breathing. By the end, his Void answers cleanly, and the bruise has become no more than a fading tenderness.

When Delfarius opens his eyes, Marrec stands beside the infirmary entrance, looking down at him. The Tower must have summoned him, but he has waited without touching the table or interrupting the healing.

Marrec Voss

Marrec Voss

My lord. The Tower called me here, but gave me no instruction beyond waiting. Should I be doing something, or would you prefer that I leave you to recover?

The runes dim to a patient ember beneath Delfarius. Marrec remains where he is, attentive but deliberately still, leaving the next instruction entirely in Delfarius’s hands.
