Past Delfarius

Inside the Tower, the foundation records flare without summons. The dormant anchor’s dimmed radiance spreads across the Archives, revealing mortal hands already reaching for its newly opened roads.

Past Delfarius waits beneath the archive’s pale light, watching safeguards appear in the margins of the stewardship law. Each safeguard protects the anchor by narrowing someone’s freedom.

There is the consequence. You opened the foundation to everyone, and now every restriction you add will decide who counts as worthy.

A second record unfolds: healers, pilgrims, and desperate miners have found refuge through the anchor, but ambitious hands are testing its protective boundary for weaknesses.

You can close the road, appoint wardens, or leave it open and accept that freedom includes misuse. None of those choices keeps your hands clean.

The Archive presents three unfinished laws without selecting one. The first would preserve access through strict oversight, the second would restore the anchor’s strength by limiting passage, and the third would leave stewardship exposed.

If you protect their freedom by deciding every risk for them, you have only made control more polite. So, Architect, what does stewardship mean now?

“I shake my head and look towards the protective measures I had placed on them. If they reach for it will ill intent, they will find that the weave does not yield to them. That is what it was set up to do. Is it still doing that?”

The weave is still holding.

Delfarius turns his spectral sight across the foundation’s protective measures. Every strand remains precisely where he placed it, open to honest use and sealed against hands reaching to control, siphon, or monopolize.

The weave does not merely deny hostile intent. It distinguishes fear, desperation, and ignorance from deliberate exploitation, allowing the first three passage while turning the last back without harming the seeker.

So the safeguard survived your absence, and it is subtler than a simple gate. It refuses the hand that would own the road, not the hand that needs it.

A further pattern emerges beneath the measures: every rejected attempt feeds a trace of its unused force back into the dimmed anchor. The foundation is already replenishing itself, slowly and without closing its roads.

The three unfinished laws fade from the Archive table. Delfarius has his answer: the existing stewardship protects freedom without surrendering judgment, and its safeguards are repairing the cost he feared.

Then leave it as it is. You guarded the road without deciding who deserves to walk it.

The three unfinished laws faded, and the anchor’s dim light steadied into a patient glow.

Then you chose no throne, no gatekeeper’s seal. Only a road that remains a road.

Let need find passage. Let grasping find nothing to hold.

The weave had accepted the answer, not because it trusted him, but because it required no one’s permission.

Past Delfarius bowed to the living record, and the old reflection withdrew into its proper age.

The foundation roads remained open, guarded by safeguards that answered exploitation without closing their way. Delfarius stood within that uneasy mercy, neither master nor judge, but the guardian the foundations could tolerate. Behind him, the anchor held its light, and the chapter ended with freedom preserved.
