Morning gathers quietly in the Obsidian Tower bedchamber. Delfarius wakes beneath dim violet lamps, while the Starless Court invitation remains secured beneath the ledger, awaiting midnight.
He completes his meditation in stillness, then brushes his long dark red hair until the waves settle neatly around his shoulders. He dresses for the morning without haste.
The breakfast chamber receives him with quiet warmth. Coffee waits beside stacked reports describing the Tower’s latest creations below, while a prepared meal rests beneath silver covers.

Marrec Voss
Everything was prepared according to your usual morning routine. I made no changes without permission.
Marrec stands nearby with lowered gaze and restrained posture, attentive but silent after speaking. He watches for Delfarius’s judgment while leaving the reports and coffee undisturbed.
The first report details a winged cat’s successful integration into the eastern aviary, followed by notes on the frontier predators’ feeding grounds and warded boundaries.
Beyond the chamber windows, the Tower drifts above the clouds. Tonight holds Morghain’s private date at dusk and the Starless Court at midnight, while Chance remains promised the morning after.

“I take a grape and snack on it as I look over at the reports being carried away to the Endless Archives to be filed away where they belong. "hmm have you eaten?" I say to Marrec realizing I have forgotten to set up a rule for that with him. After the praise I gave him he probally has not been since I did not tell him he could. Before he can answer me his stomach does by growling loudly.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -3)

Delfarius takes a grape and watches the reports lift from the table, their pages carried by obedient magic toward the Endless Archives for proper filing.

Delfarius
Hmm, have you eaten?
Before Marrec can answer, his stomach growls loudly enough to challenge the Tower’s quiet. His lowered gaze snaps toward the covered meal, then back to Delfarius.

Marrec Voss
No, my lord. You praised my preparation, and I understood that as permission to continue serving. I did not understand that I was permitted to eat.
The answer succeeds in exposing the omission, but the cost settles between them: Marrec now knows his place at the table was never made clear, and his trust bears that uncertainty.

Marrec Voss
I can correct it immediately. If you wish me to eat, I will. If you expect a rule, please state it plainly so I do not presume again.
The covered meal remains within reach, untouched. Marrec waits for Delfarius’s ruling, while the last report disappears into the Tower’s archival light.
“I lift the cloche from the plate to see what he has prepared me. I take a bite and smirk. "Yes you may eat this. It is fine but you should eat this plate by evidence of your stomach protesting. You may make a plate of food as well when you make mine. You can eat it either before or after I do." I look at him go and start to eat the food he made for me. 'Hasn't really proven the right to eat with me, yet.' I think to myself as I watch him eat it hungrily.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius lifts the cloche from the plate, releasing the rich scent of roasted meat, buttered roots, and warm bread. He takes a bite and smirks at Marrec.

Delfarius
Yes, you may eat this. It is fine, but your stomach has already made its argument. When you make mine, you may make a plate for yourself as well. Eat before or after I do.
Marrec’s shoulders loosen. He does not leave for another plate; instead, he accepts the plate Delfarius gives him, bowing before taking it with both hands.

Marrec Voss
Understood, my lord. When I prepare your meal, I may prepare mine too. I will eat from what you permit without assuming that permission means a place beside you.
Marrec eats hungrily from the offered plate, careful not to claim the chair opposite Delfarius. The rule is clear, but the privilege of sharing the table remains deliberately ungranted.

Delfarius
He may eat, but he has not yet proven the right to eat with me.

Marrec Voss
He gave me food without making me beg for it. I must not mistake that mercy for belonging.
The shared breakfast routine is established: Marrec will prepare food for himself alongside Delfarius’s meal, but today he remains a servant receiving permission, not a companion invited to dine.
“I eat the bite of the food and hand the fork to Marrec so he can use it to eat instead of the spoon he was trying to grab the root veggies with. I laugh a bit. "Besides, I really do not need to eat. I just enjoy doing things like that because it is pleasurable. And" I let out a large sigh as I lift from my chair. "I fear I will have plenty to eat today one way or another."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius eats the bite, then retrieves a fork from the breakfast setting before Marrec can seize the spoon. He places the fork in Marrec’s hand.
Marrec replaces the spoon and uses the fork to lift the buttered roots. Delfarius laughs lightly, making the correction feel practical rather than ceremonial.

Delfarius
Besides, I really do not need to eat. I just enjoy doing things like that because it is pleasurable.
Marrec eats more steadily, though his careful posture returns. The fork grants him comfort, but the easy kindness also reminds him that every ordinary privilege still depends on Delfarius’s permission.

Delfarius
And I fear I will have plenty to eat today one way or another.
Delfarius releases a large sigh and rises from his chair. Marrec lowers the fork, visibly unsettled by the ominous remark, though he continues eating rather than asking for reassurance.

Marrec Voss
I understand, my lord. I will keep your meals ready, though I am beginning to suspect that today’s hospitality may involve more than breakfast.
The comment costs Marrec some confidence by exposing his suspicion, but it also establishes the day’s tension plainly: Delfarius has accepted the meal, and Marrec now knows to expect danger beyond the table.
“i let out a laugh as I pace behind Marrec. "No need to worry, I am going to the dangers, not bringing them here." I look out of the window and laugh. "I am curious however, have you heard of the Starless Court?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Occult Lore, rolled +0)
Delfarius laughs and paces behind Marrec, his footsteps quiet against the black stone. Beyond the windows, clouds drift beneath the Tower like pale seas.

Delfarius
No need to worry. I am going to the dangers, not bringing them here.
He turns toward the window, laughing again, while Marrec pauses with his fork lowered. The servant’s attention shifts from the meal to the vast sky beyond the glass.

Delfarius
I am curious, however. Have you heard of the Starless Court?
The question draws a wary crease across Marrec’s brow. The Tower’s occult resonance confirms the invitation’s meaning: the Starless Court is a hidden conclave beyond Cevalle’s ordinary powers, seeking an audience without demanding an oath.

Marrec Voss
I have heard the name, my lord. It is said to be a court without a permanent ruler, gathering nobles, exiles, and powers who refuse the crowns of ordinary kingdoms. They meet beneath a starless sign at the western edge of Cevalle. I know no more than that, but the invitation sounds genuine.
