Delfarius remains in the guild hall booth with his coffee, his mortal guise flawless as dawn filters through mismatched windows. Around him, adventurers wake, bargain, and sharpen tools.
Upstairs, packs thump into order. Pistol and Stabby McStabbson soon descend together, carrying organized gear while Cox rides Pistol’s wrist and Rocket peeks from her pocket.

Stabby McStabbson
Gear ready! Stabby sort rope, food, treasure tools, and mayor things. No pouch stealing. Maybe little pouch borrowing.
The parchment hidden among Delfarius’s belongings warms against him. Ink crawls beneath Tremble’s eastern roads, forming a single line before the warmth fades.
Beyond the eastern quarter, the writing names a sealed wayhouse beneath a dry well. Beneath it, a second sentence appears: Someone in Tremble already knows the map exists.

Vrsha
There you are. I am rested enough, and ready to guide you through the eastern quarter. If the map has changed, I would very much like to know why.
Vrsha joins them beside the booth, travel gear secured and teal hair tied back. Pistol studies the parchment eagerly, while Stabby reaches toward it with conspicuous restraint.

Keep the map’s hidden message from uncontrolled hands
“Unseen or unfelt by mortals I stop time. When time is still I calmly look over the parchment and look at it. What does the first line say that is near Tremble's eastern roads. After I have examined it I make a identical copy that is mundane and ordinary. I keep my map hidden safely away from prying mortal hands and eyes. I let time flow again afterwards and feign trying to stop Stabby from grabbing the new, ordinary map. I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I tell Stabby to get out of my things, like a mortal man would do to a little goblin.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Void Manipulation, rolled -2)

Time stops around the guild hall. Steam hangs above untouched coffee, and every adventurer freezes mid-motion while Delfarius calmly draws out the route-index.
The first line near Tremble’s eastern roads reads: A sealed wayhouse lies beneath a dry well. Beneath it, the warning names someone in Tremble who already knows the map exists.
He copies the route-index perfectly, then strips the duplicate of every shifting rune and hidden resonance. The mundane parchment becomes an ordinary map, dull ink on plain paper.
Delfarius hides the true route-index safely among his belongings and conceals the copy where mortal hands can find it. A sharp burn crosses his branded palm, the price of holding time still.
Time resumes. Stabby’s reaching hand continues toward the ordinary map, while Pistol watches with bright curiosity and Vrsha studies the parchment’s harmless lines.

Delfarius
Stabby, get out of my things.
Delfarius snatches the mundane copy away with a thoroughly mortal irritation. Stabby recoils, clutching his magic pouch, while the copied map offers no trace of its true origin.

Keep the map’s hidden message from uncontrolled hands
“I look down at my hands like I had just spilled hot coffee on them, at the burns. I let Vrsha and Pistol look over the map. Stabby looks at me and I give him a sly not seen by the others, a small dangerous grin that will remind him of me threating to kill him from before I erased all of his memory of me being more than a mortal man. Cox looks over the map and points out the sealed wayhouse on the map. Rocket sits on Pistol's shoulder. I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”
SUCCESS (Fair Deception, rolled +3)

Delfarius looks down at his hands as though hot coffee has splashed across them. The branded palm bears a sharp red burn, convincing beneath his mortal guise.
He allows Vrsha and Pistol to examine the copied map. Its dull ink shows Tremble’s eastern quarter, the dry well, and the sealed wayhouse beneath it.

Vrsha
This well is real, but the wayhouse is absent from every guild chart. The old road beside it is still safe enough for an expedition.

Pistol
Cox found it! Maybe the sealed door is friendly, especially if it has treasure behind it.
Rocket settles on Pistol’s shoulder. Cox leans over the parchment and points one tiny claw toward the eastern well, confirming the marked wayhouse.
Stabby catches Delfarius’s eye. The small, dangerous grin meant only for him recalls an older threat beneath the erased memories, and the goblin stiffens.

Stabby McStabbson
Stab. Stabby careful. Map good. Wayhouse good. No touch things.
“I make a motion of looking for some salve in my belongings and put some Salve on my hands to heal the burns. I smirk to myself and let a small malicious grin settle towards where Stabby is watching me. I do enjoy making him squirm I think to my thoughts alone. I mumble under my breath about being mostly useless for a while because of the burns on my hands. I let my void sight pass through the room unseen and unfelt by the mortals. Which one of these fuckers besides the ones with me know about my map. I check the strands of the mortal's souls. Which one is connected to my map? I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses, an annoyed archivist with burnt hands.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

Delfarius searches his belongings with annoyed precision, finds a small salve tin, and works the cool ointment over both branded palms. The angry red burn recedes.
He flexes his healing fingers, then lets a small malicious grin settle toward Stabby. The goblin stiffens around his magic pouch, watching every movement.

Delfarius
I will be mostly useless for a while with these burns on my hands.
Without changing his mortal expression, Delfarius releases Void Sight through the guild hall. It passes unseen and unfelt through walls, bodies, and the copied parchment.
Soul-strands emerge as pale filaments around the room. Pistol, Stabby, Vrsha, and the other adventurers remain separate from the true route-index, their connections clean.
One strand alone touches the map: Vrsha’s. The link is newly awakened recognition, not ownership, but it confirms she already knows the map exists.
Vrsha is the mortal connected to the map.

“Cox and Rocket perch on Pistol's shoulders and I rise from the table letting Vrsha and Pistol have the mundane map. Stabby is a bit more uneasy around me, but still wants loot and to be the major. I look at Vrsha with a soft smirk. "I will help as best as I can. I guess I am the one now not at full strength." Pistol asks what I mean about that and Vrsha looks at me coyly and remarks to pistol what she needs to know since she is a young girl. I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I look at Vrsha with a soft expression but am looking at her soul thread unseen and unfelt by her mortal eyes. Why is this a concern that she knows about the map, I wonder and think over to my thoughts alone.”

Cox, the tiny inky shadow squirrel, curls around Pistol’s left shoulder while Rocket, her brass mechanical squirrel, balances on the right. Delfarius rises, leaving the mundane map with them.

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby still become mayor. Stabby want loot. But Stabby no touch Delfarius things.

Delfarius
I will help as best as I can. I guess I am the one now not at full strength.

Pistol
What do you mean? Are your hands hurt, or did the map do something strange?

Vrsha
Some grown-up expeditions leave aches behind, little one. That is all you need to know until you are older.
Delfarius gives Vrsha a soft smirk while his unseen sight follows her soul-thread. Beneath its clean surface, a recent memory gleams: yesterday, a guild clerk showed her the branching sigil in a sealed ledger.

Delfarius
She knows because the guild was already searching for this route.

Secure the guild’s silence about the map
“Do I care if the guild knows?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 36)
The answer settles through Delfarius’s borrowed mortal shell: yes, the guild knowing matters. The map is no longer merely a route, but a thread leading toward his concealed design.
His unseen sight follows Vrsha’s memory deeper. The sealed ledger rests upstairs in the guild clerk’s office, and its branching sigil matches the copy now lying between Pistol and Stabby.

Vrsha
If you are wondering whether the guild knows, it does. Not everything, but enough to send me toward the eastern well.
Pistol hugs the mundane map closer, while Cox’s blue eyes fix on Vrsha. Rocket gives a nervous metallic chirp from her shoulder.

Vrsha
The clerk called it a dead route and warned me not to discuss it. That warning made it difficult to resist.

Stabby McStabbson
Guild know treasure! Guild hide treasure! Stabby inspect guild very carefully.
Around them, the guild resumes its morning bustle, unaware that its quiet ledger has become the first pressure point in an expedition no longer safely private.
“"Hmm." I say raising an eyebrow and noticing that Vrsha has a ring on her finger that helps her hear thoughts. Interesting, I think to my thoughts alone. I mask my true thoughts deeper than the little mortal magic can reach and wonder how much she heard of my thoughts earlier. On the surface thoughts I think to Vrsha, 'Are the guild going to be a problem in this, or?' She responds to me and Pistol wonders if it is a shadow weaver thing to speak without words and tries with Stabby.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled -1)

Delfarius
That ring hears thoughts. My deeper mind remains beyond its reach. How much did she catch before I noticed?
Delfarius raises an eyebrow, masking the true currents of his mind beneath layered silence. The ring catches only the carefully shaped surface thought he permits it to receive.

Delfarius
Are the guild going to be a problem in this, or?

Vrsha
A problem if we let them become curious. The clerk wants the route investigated, but the guild wants whatever lies beneath it. I can keep their attention on my expedition, for now.
Vrsha’s ring glimmers once, confirming the thought’s arrival. Her gaze lingers on Delfarius, measuring the deliberate simplicity of what he allowed her to hear.

Pistol
Wait, you two spoke without moving your mouths! Is that a shadow-weaver thing? Stabby, try thinking something at me!

Stabby McStabbson
Stabby think very loudly! Pouch treasure! Pouch no stealing! Stabby mayor!
Pistol squeezes her eyes shut and concentrates toward Stabby. Cox’s blue eyes brighten, while Rocket chitters nervously and Vrsha hides an amused smile behind her hand.
“"We should start investigating it then." I say with a flourish and a smirk. I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I look down and pull the sealed ledgers with the routes to my concealed design apart, the ink on the ledgers muddling and showing a different route, a route to a deep hidden sewer where there is nothing but sewage. I laugh to myself quietly. To my own deep hidden thoughts I think, 'cant wait for the guide to find that treasure.' "Shall we?" We head out.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Deception, rolled -1)

Delfarius
We should start investigating it then. Shall we?
With a flourish and a smirk, Delfarius lowers his gaze. Unseen and unfelt, his mastery over ink draws the sealed ledgers apart within the folds of his belongings.
The branching routes liquefy beneath his will. Letters muddle, sigils dissolve, and the ledgers rewrite themselves into a descent toward a deep hidden sewer beneath Tremble.
The false route settles into convincing detail: clogged sluices, drowned steps, and a terminal chamber holding nothing but stagnant sewage. The true path disappears beneath obedient ink.

Delfarius
I cannot wait for the guide to find that treasure.
The alteration costs him a sharp, lingering burn across one palm as the ink drinks from his remaining strength. His mortal guise conceals the wound, but not the faint tremor in his fingers.

Vrsha
Then let us investigate. If the guild wants this route, I will make certain we are the first to discover what lies beneath it.
“We all get guided by Vrsha to the eastern quater where the sealed wayhouse is hidden beneath a dry well. I muse to my deep inner thoughts. What is hidden there...is it safe for mortals to discover? I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I look down the well from above. "Well that is a deep dark hole." I look over to Vrsha with a wry smirk. Pistol and Stabby do what they do best. Go ahead without warning. Vrsha remarks about my statement then yells out at Stabby and Pistol.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)
Vrsha guides the group through Tremble’s eastern quarter to a weed-choked square. A dry stone well stands beneath a leaning waymarker, untouched by ordinary traffic.

Delfarius
What is hidden there, and is it safe for mortals to discover?
Delfarius leans over the well’s rim, remaining mortal to every watching eye and sense. Far below, the darkness reveals a buried arch and a ladder descending into a sealed wayhouse.

Delfarius
Well, that is a deep dark hole.

Vrsha
That it is. Most wells offer water, not an old road beneath the city. Try not to sound so delighted by the distinction.
Pistol immediately climbs onto the inner stones, Cox clinging to her shoulder while Rocket peers from her pocket. Stabby follows, lowering himself toward the hidden ladder without waiting.

Vrsha
Pistol! Stabby! Wait for the guide, you reckless little explorers!
Their lantern-light drops into the shaft. The buried arch opens below them without resistance, revealing a dry, intact wayhouse carved beneath Tremble, its entrance safe for mortal passage.
“I raise an eyebrow to Vrsha and think about how nice her ass looks in her tight pants. I watch her get a bit flustered remarking how I should behave around innocent ears. "Oh those two are young, not innocent." I say back to her amused. In my deeper thoughts I think over if this is another route to Oakhaven that was not removed or if it is an route that leads to somewhere more dangerous for mortals to find. A route to my Tower.... I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I watch all of them get down the ladder then float down after making some nonsense magical sounding words to float down like a feather.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

Delfarius
The route may lead toward Oakhaven, the Tower, or somewhere more dangerous for mortals to uncover.
Delfarius raises an eyebrow at Vrsha, his gaze lingering on the fit of her travel clothes. She catches it, cheeks warming as Pistol and Stabby descend below.

Vrsha
Try to behave around innocent ears, traveler. We are supposed to be guiding an expedition, not distracting the children.

Delfarius
Oh, those two are young, not innocent.
Vrsha flushes more deeply and bites back a laugh. Below, Pistol calls that the ladder is safe, while Stabby loudly claims the first landing for mayoral purposes.
Once the others reach the buried floor, Delfarius murmurs a string of nonsense syllables that sound convincingly arcane. His mortal guise remains flawless as a gentle spell lifts him from the rim.
He drifts down like a feather and lands beside the intact wayhouse entrance without stirring dust. The chamber opens before them, dry stone archways leading into darkness and old, silent roads.
“Pistol looks around at the shadows with Cox helping her and guiding her. Stabby sniffs the air and looks for traps. Vrsha remarks how it is now apparent the younger ones know how to look for trouble proper. I lean back against a wall. I am a mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. A poor injured Archivist who is taking a rest. In my deeper hidden thoughts I figure out which way this place leads to. Hopefully it is not to my Tower... Pistol and Stabby announce what their investigations have found.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Investigation, rolled -1)

Pistol lowers her gaze to the shadows while Cox guides her along the wall. Stabby sniffs the dry air, testing each stone and iron seam for hidden danger.

Vrsha
Well, it is apparent the younger ones know how to look for trouble properly. I may have underestimated your expedition.
Delfarius leans against the wayhouse wall, presenting only an injured, weary archivist. Beneath that disguise, his deeper sight follows the buried road beyond the arch.

Pistol
Cox says the shadows all point east, but they bend around one sealed doorway. There is a road behind it, and it feels older than Tremble.

Stabby McStabbson
No trap on floor! Trap in door, maybe. Stabby smell old dust, cold iron, and goblin-sized bad surprise. Road go down, then east.
The hidden route resolves beneath Delfarius’s awareness: it runs east beneath Tremble, away from Oakhaven and the Obsidian Tower, toward the scorched frontier and the new town’s foundations.
The knowledge costs him a fresh flare across his branded palm. A drop of blood darkens the wall beside his shoulder, while Vrsha’s eyes briefly narrow at the sound.
