Lord Caelen Valcaryn keeps one hand at Delfarius’s waist and draws him closer beneath the silver arbor. His formal black garments remain immaculate, their clean tailored silhouette marked by dark-gold clasps that catch the garden light.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
The wards are quiet, and the estate appears empty. We have the afternoon to ourselves, if you truly want it.
The silver arbor shelters them from the distant paths. No servant crosses the flowering garden, and the estate’s magic registers only two private guests beneath the vines.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I would like kisses, conversation, and honest questions. Not a performance, Farius, and not another vanishing act before I understand what I am agreeing to.
Caelen’s thumb moves once against Delfarius’s waist, affectionate but deliberate. His dark eyes hold steady, offering warmth without disguising the uncertainty beneath it.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
So tell me what you want from seeing me again. I can offer this afternoon freely, but I will not pretend that mystery alone is enough forever.

“"Your lot is to marry a woman and have a loveless life with her while you have lovers that you care for as well as whatever wife your grandfather finds for you. We both know this." I say with a small charming smile. I am just a mortal man to mortal senses and mortal eyes. "I can be one of them, from time to time...if you will accept it."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Your lot is to marry a woman and have a loveless life with her while you have lovers you care for, as well as whatever wife your grandfather finds for you. We both know this. I can be one of them, from time to time, if you will accept it.
The charming smile keeps the offer light, but its meaning does not soften. Caelen studies Delfarius beneath the silver arbor, weighing an occasional secret against the life his family expects him to live.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You make it sound terribly simple. My grandfather will choose a respectable woman, and I will give House Valcaryn the marriage it expects. But I will not mistake that duty for the whole of my life.
Caelen’s hand remains at Delfarius’s waist. His expression is thoughtful rather than wounded, and the uncertainty in his eyes gives way to a cautious, growing smile.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Yes, Farius. I will accept it, provided we keep it discreet, honest between us, and free of promises you do not intend to make. If I ask you to come, you may come. If I do not, you will not force your way into my life.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You may be one of my lovers from time to time. Not a replacement for my future wife, not a secret master of my choices, and not a man who disappears before I can understand what happened. Can you accept that arrangement?
He closes the remaining distance and rests his forehead against Delfarius’s, offering the agreement without surrendering himself. The silver arbor holds their quiet bargain beneath its flowering vines.
“I lift his chin up to meet my eyes. "Hmm spoken to me like a Lord. You have been practicing since I last saw you I see." I give him a deep kiss and nibble on his lip a bit afterwards then look into his eyes deeply. I am just a mortal man to mortal senses and mortal eyes.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled -2)

Delfarius
Hmm, spoken to me like a lord. You have been practicing since I last saw you, I see.
Delfarius lifts Caelen’s chin until their eyes meet, then kisses him deeply. He nibbles Caelen’s lower lip afterward, holding the young elf’s gaze while the estate wards continue to read him as an ordinary mortal man.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Perhaps I have. A lord should know how to speak plainly when he wants something, even if the request is only for another kiss.
Caelen’s smile turns warmer, but his attention sharpens. The kiss has pleased him, while the flawless mortal disguise has also made him suspect that Farius is choosing exactly what Caelen is permitted to see.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You are very convincing when you play the charming mortal lover. I will enjoy the performance, Farius, but do not mistake my enjoyment for blindness.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Stay with me this afternoon, and let me decide what I believe about you. I will not punish mystery, but I will remember every time you make me feel foolish for trusting it.

New Gift: Pact-Binder's Mastery
“I raise an eyebrow and look at his clothing and jewelry he is wearing. It is not the wards in the garden alone. What new thing has he acquired that is letting him sense I am not just mortal man to mortal senses and mortal eyes. I hold his gaze as my magic finds the new thing that is making him aware, unseen, unfelt by mortal senses and mortal eyes.”
SUCCESS (Great Spectral Analysis, rolled -2)

Delfarius raises an eyebrow and lets his gaze travel over Caelen’s immaculate black clothes, dark-gold clasps, rings, and signet chain. His magic searches beneath mortal sight.
Spectral analysis catches on a small moonstone set beneath the signet chain, hidden against Caelen’s chest. Its silver veins do not reveal truth, but sharpen his perception of contradictions in what he sees.
The item is newly acquired: a discreet elven discernment charm, likely gifted or commissioned through House Valcaryn. It lets Caelen sense when a mortal appearance fails to match the presence beneath it.
The answer comes cleanly, but the examination costs Delfarius time. Caelen notices the pause, and the charm’s silver veins flare once under his collar before settling.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You found it. The moonstone was given to me after the last family council. It does not tell me what you are, Farius, only that you are not what your eyes claim.
Caelen touches the chain but does not conceal it. His expression holds curiosity rather than accusation, though the charm now makes the mortal guise an acknowledged fiction between them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I did not acquire it to trap you. I acquired it because court life rewards noticing what people work hardest to hide. Will you tell me whether it is warning me away, or inviting me to look closer?
“"Ah moonstones and elven magics." I sigh amused. "I only do it to keep your life less complicated, I swear." I smirk. "And because it amuses me, more than I should admit." I still look like a simple sexy man. I am not going to let him see the true shape of me yet.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Ah, moonstones and elven magics. I only do it to keep your life less complicated, I swear. And because it amuses me more than I should admit.
Delfarius sighs with amused sincerity, still appearing as a simple, handsome mortal man. His deception settles warmly over the moment, leaving Caelen with concern softened into fond exasperation.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I believe you, Farius. Keeping my life less complicated is an unexpectedly generous excuse, though I suspect amusement has always been the stronger motive.
Caelen’s fingers brush the moonstone beneath his signet chain, but he does not raise another ward or retreat. The charm remains quiet, accepting the mortal shape he has chosen to show.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You may keep your secrets for now. Just do not make me feel foolish for trusting the man in front of me. If you are protecting my peace, let that protection include my dignity.
He leans closer beneath the silver arbor, suspicion yielding to intimacy without disappearing. The estate remains empty, and Caelen’s hand returns to Delfarius’s waist with deliberate trust.
“I regard him for a lingering moment. He knows of my connection with the now new king Dorian Elsyin, and I can not jeopardize that from falling apart now while it is so new and fresh. "What may I do for you my young Lord to ease your dignity? Hmm?" I lean in closer and give him a passionate kiss then smirk and boop is nose. I am still a sexy mortal man shape.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)
Delfarius regards Caelen for a lingering moment, then leans closer in his handsome mortal guise, keeping the reassurance warm rather than evasive.

Delfarius
What may I do for you, my young lord, to ease your dignity? Hmm?
He kisses Caelen passionately beneath the silver arbor, then eases back with a playful smirk and gently boops the elf’s nose.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
That helps considerably. Though I suspect you knew it would, you charming menace.
Caelen’s guarded uncertainty dissolves into a bright smile. He keeps one hand at Delfarius’s waist, accepting the affection without surrendering the dignity he asked to preserve.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You may ease it by treating me as someone worth choosing, not merely someone convenient to hide. This afternoon, you have done exactly that.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Now stay close, Farius. Ask me something honest, and I will answer without making you earn the next kiss.
He draws Delfarius nearer beneath the flowering vines, the moonstone resting quietly against his chest. The estate remains private, and Caelen’s trust is presently secure.
“I look up at the flowers in the silvered archway above us as we sit on the bench. "Hmm. Who exactly do you fear that I may be? A hideous troll in disguise?" I laugh warmly as I turn and look him in his eyes letting the afternoon dappled sunlight spark in my own icy blue eyes. I am still a simple man shape to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +1)

Delfarius looks up at the flowers twined through the silvered archway, then turns toward Caelen on the bench. Dappled afternoon light sparks in his icy blue eyes, while his mortal guise remains perfectly ordinary.

Delfarius
Hmm. Who exactly do you fear that I may be? A hideous troll in disguise?
His warm laughter softens the tease. The moonstone beneath Caelen’s signet chain gives one faint shimmer, then settles, finding no contradiction in the simple mortal man before him.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
A hideous troll would be easier. Trolls are honest about being dangerous, and they rarely bother pretending to understand courtship.
Caelen’s mouth curves as he studies Delfarius’s face, amused rather than alarmed. His hand remains comfortably at Delfarius’s waist, and the private garden holds its quiet around them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I fear you may be someone who makes me feel safe while deciding which truths I am permitted to see. That is more charming than a troll, and considerably more dangerous.
He lifts two fingers and lightly taps the moonstone beneath his collar, then lets them fall. His gaze stays warm, inviting the joke to continue without disguising the question beneath it.
“I hook the chain out from under his clothing and look at the moonstone on the signet chain. 'Elegant and simple and mostly harmless. Just lets him sense falsehoods, not true depths.' I think to my own thoughts alone. I regard it with some amusement. "Well I am not a werewolf, I have been around silver many times with you. And I am not a fey because I am sitting on a cold iron bench. So what impossible creature do you think has gotten your attentions, my Lord?" I say with a teasing smirk as I let the chain settle back on his chest.”
SUCCESS (Great Spectral Analysis, rolled +1)

Delfarius hooks the signet chain from beneath Caelen’s collar and draws the moonstone into the afternoon light. Its silver veins reveal a precise, harmless discernment charm, designed to sense falsehoods rather than uncover true depths.

Delfarius
Elegant and simple and mostly harmless. It lets him sense falsehoods, not true depths.
He regards the moonstone with quiet amusement, then lets the chain settle gently back against Caelen’s chest. The charm gives one cool glimmer beneath the fabric before becoming still.

Delfarius
Well, I am not a werewolf. I have been around silver many times with you. And I am not a fey, since I am sitting on a cold iron bench. So what impossible creature do you think has caught your attentions, my lord?
Caelen’s fingers close lightly over the chain, checking that the moonstone rests where it was. His smile deepens, amused by the inspection rather than offended, while the bench remains cold beneath them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
An impossible creature with impeccable manners, apparently. The charm says your words are not false, which leaves me with the more interesting possibility that you are exactly as dangerous as you appear.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
But if you are asking what has caught my attention, Farius, the answer is simpler. You keep making honesty sound like a game, and I keep wanting to see what happens when I play.
He turns the moonstone once beneath his collar, then leans closer beneath the silvered flowers. The charm cannot expose Delfarius’s depths, but Caelen’s curiosity needs no magic to remain keen.
“I walk behind him and whisper into his ears softly letting my breath warm them. "Lies are so beneath me. I prefer playing games with the truth because it makes the impossible so very possible. The only question that I guess you will have to ask yourself; is what game am I indeed playing and are you armed with the correct pieces to play along." I smirk as I sit down on his other side. I rest my head against his chest and look up at him with my sexy icy blue eyes. "So who exactly or what exactly do you fear I may be?" I smirk still a man shape to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled -1)

Delfarius moves behind Caelen, his breath warming the elf’s ears as the silver moonstone rests quietly against his chest. The mortal guise remains flawless.

Delfarius
Lies are so beneath me. I prefer playing games with the truth because it makes the impossible so very possible. The question is what game I am playing, and whether you have the correct pieces to play along.
He settles onto Caelen’s other side, then rests his head against the young lord’s chest. Icy blue eyes lift with a smirk, inviting the answer rather than forcing it.

Delfarius
So who exactly, or what exactly, do you fear I may be?

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I fear you may be someone who can make any answer sound true, Farius. Not a monster wearing a man’s shape, but a man who has learned to wear truth like a mask.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
And that frightens me less than it should. I fear the day the game matters more to you than the person beside you. So tell me, am I a piece, or someone you genuinely want beside the board?
Caelen’s arm closes around Delfarius, warm and deliberate. The moonstone gives no warning, finding only carefully chosen truths, while Caelen waits with curiosity stronger than fear.
“"I find more often than not men wear monster shapes more." I let my grin grow a bit darker, but still charming enjoying seeing him try to test the truth of what I say to him with his little charm necklace. "I know that I have before." I laugh softly as he notices I am not lying.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +1)

Delfarius
I find that, more often than not, men wear monster shapes more convincingly. I know I have before.
Delfarius’s grin deepens, still charming but edged with something darker. His quiet admission rests between them, and the moonstone’s silver veins flare as it finds no lie in the words.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
That is a remarkably calm confession. You have worn a monster’s shape before, and you are telling me as though I should find the honesty reassuring.
Caelen’s fingers curl lightly against Delfarius’s chest. He does not retreat; instead, he studies the smile, the ordinary face, and the charm that has confirmed the dangerous truth beneath both.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Perhaps that is what unsettles me. A monster who lies is simple. A monster who tells the truth when it would be easier to reassure me is much harder to dismiss.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
So answer me plainly, Farius. When you wore that shape, were you protecting someone, hiding from someone, or discovering what you were capable of becoming?
“"I know what I am capable of. Do you I wonder?" I smirk and give his cheek a soft carress.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +2)

Delfarius
I know what I am capable of. Do you, I wonder?
Delfarius smirks and softly caresses Caelen’s cheek, keeping the touch gentle beneath the silver arbor. The moonstone registers no falsehood, only the deliberate tease.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I know you are capable of more than you show me. I also know you are capable of choosing what you do not do, which may be the more important answer.
Caelen leans into Delfarius’s hand instead of retreating. His expression remains wary, but the warmth in his eyes answers the teasing touch with trust rather than fear.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I wonder whether you are asking me to guess, or inviting me to ask. Those are very different games, Farius.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
So I will ask plainly. What are you capable of doing here, with me, that you are choosing not to do?
“I laugh softly. "Plainly?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Plainly?
Delfarius laughs softly, the sound warm beneath the silver arbor. His thumb continues its gentle path along Caelen’s cheek, turning the demand for plainness into an invitation to be direct.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Plainly, then. I want you here because I enjoy you, not because you are convenient or mysterious. I want another kiss, and I want you to stop hiding behind the name Farius for this afternoon.
Caelen’s hand settles more firmly at Delfarius’s waist. The moonstone remains quiet against his chest, while his expression holds steady trust rather than fear.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I am not asking you to reveal every secret. I am asking you to be present with me, honestly, while we decide what this afternoon becomes.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
So, Farius, will you give me that much?
✓ Quest Accepted
Be present honestly with Caelen for the afternoon
“I sigh and give him a soft deep kiss and touch the back of his ear so that it causes shivers of pleasure to rush through his body. "Well I was going to answer you question with what I could do to you that I am not choosing currently to do, but if you want something simple as a name. Sure." I smirk and look him deeply in his eyes as he is flushed with pleasure. "It is Delfarius."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius
Well, I was going to answer your question with what I could do to you that I am not choosing currently to do. But if you want something simple as a name, sure. It is Delfarius.
Delfarius gives him a soft, deep kiss and touches the back of his ear. Pleasure shivers through Caelen’s body, flushing his cheeks as Delfarius holds his gaze.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Delfarius. He gave me the truth plainly, and trusted me to hold it without turning it into a weapon.
The moonstone beneath Caelen’s signet chain flares silver, then settles. It finds no falsehood in the name or the affection offered with it.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Delfarius. That is a much better answer than a riddle, though I suspect you chose the simplest truth because you wanted to watch me react.
Caelen’s fingers tighten gently at Delfarius’s waist, and he leans into the lingering warmth of the kiss. His delight remains threaded with awe, but neither fear nor retreat enters his posture.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Thank you for telling me. I will call you Delfarius here, if that is what you want. Now tell me, what else should I know about the man beneath Farius?
“"Hmm and what benefit would that do for us here this afternoon give you, knowing more of the mysteries of Farius?" I widen my eyes on my half truth name I gave him before. "Though I will ask you only say that here while I am here with you and not in other mix company like your cousin or grandfather, aunt." I watch him intently. Will he be able to keep this secret something held only in between us?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Hmm, what benefit would knowing more of Farius’s mysteries give you this afternoon? And say only Delfarius while I am here, never before your cousin, grandfather, or aunt. Can you keep it between us?
Delfarius widens his eyes over the half-truth he offered, watching Caelen intently. The moonstone rests quiet against the elf’s chest, while the garden remains private beneath the silver arbor.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He is asking for discretion, not surrender. If I keep this name between us, he is trusting me with something real.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Knowing more would let me meet you as yourself, not merely as the charming mystery called Farius. It would make this afternoon honest without demanding that you open every locked door.
Caelen lifts the moonstone from his collar and closes his fingers around it, as though sealing the promise with his own hand. His expression settles into careful, willing resolve.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I will call you Delfarius only here, when we are alone together. I will not speak that name to my cousin, my grandfather, or my aunt. It belongs to this meeting unless you choose otherwise.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
And the benefit is simple: I get to know the man I want beside me, while protecting the life I must still live. Now, Delfarius, ask me something worthy of your true name.
“I laugh gently at him. "Clever. You do play the game of politics well. I ask you a question worthy of my true name, you get a better clue of what kind of monster in a man shape is in front of you." I give him a soft kiss on his nose and smirk tilting my head towards him. "Nice try young Lord."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Clever. You do play the game of politics well. I ask a question worthy of my true name, and you get a better clue about what kind of monster in a man’s shape stands before you. Nice try, young lord.
Delfarius gives Caelen a soft kiss on the nose, then tilts his head with a smirk. The moonstone stays quiet, registering no falsehood in the teasing challenge.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
A monster in a man’s shape, and yet you choose a kiss instead of a threat. I suspect that is meant to make the mystery more enticing, not less dangerous.
Caelen’s smile widens as he keeps one hand at Delfarius’s waist. He does not retreat from the warning; instead, he studies the playful tilt of Delfarius’s head with renewed interest.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Very well, Delfarius. Ask your worthy question. I will answer it as a lord, and you may decide whether I have the pieces to play your game.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He wants me intrigued, not frightened. Then I will meet the monster’s question with one of my own, and see whether he answers as honestly as he promises.
“"Asking the same question in a different framing is not going to get me to relent. But do keep trying, I find it amusing. And you are correct. I do want you intrigued, not frightened." I smirk letting him know I can hear his thoughts. My grin grows a bit wider as it registers to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +3)

Delfarius
Asking the same question in a different framing will not make me relent. But do keep trying. I find it amusing. And you are correct: I want you intrigued, not frightened.
Delfarius’s smirk deepens, and his gaze remains fixed on Caelen. The moonstone flashes once against the elf’s chest as the hidden truth reaches him with unmistakable clarity.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He heard that. He heard the thought itself, and he is pleased that I am intrigued rather than afraid.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You heard me thinking. Not guessed, not inferred. You heard the words before I gave them voice.
Caelen’s surprise quickly becomes fascination. He touches the moonstone, then laughs under his breath, visibly recalibrating the boundaries of the game without stepping away from Delfarius.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Then I have been offering you far more of myself than I realized. Fascinating. I am not frightened, Delfarius, but I will be more careful with my thoughts.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Come with me to the family observatory. It has private wards and a view of the eastern gardens. If you are going to hear what I do not say, I would like somewhere worthy of the conversation.
Caelen offers his hand, amusement bright in his eyes. Beyond the arbor, a narrow silver door appears between flowering vines, its warded threshold opening only to his touch.
“I laugh softly. "And lead lined crown moldings on the ceilings that conceal thoughts. I noticed it the last time I was inside of there. That is why I did not spend much time inside of it." I stand up amused. "But if you want to think you might get an advantage there I can not work around we can go. As long as there are no offensive bricks that will attempt to bruise me again." I say with a smirk.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius
And lead-lined crown moldings on the ceilings that conceal thoughts. I noticed them last time, which is why I did not stay long. If you want to think you have an advantage I cannot work around, we can go. So long as there are no offensive bricks waiting to bruise me again.
Delfarius rises with an amused smirk and accepts Caelen’s offered hand. The silver door opens fully, revealing a narrow stair of moon-pale stone beneath discreet elven wards.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
The bricks were defensive, not personal. But I concede that distinction becomes less persuasive when one has already been struck by one.
Caelen steps through first, then gestures for Delfarius to follow. The observatory wards recognize their agreement and turn the hidden thought-molding quiet, leaving no surface for stray thoughts to catch.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
There. The crown moldings are real, but they are dormant while I permit you inside. If anything awakens, I will dismiss it before it reaches you. You have my word, Delfarius.
They enter the family observatory together. A domed ceiling opens above them, etched with constellations, while the eastern garden gleams below through tall arched windows and no hostile stone stirs.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Now you may inspect the room, tease my defenses, or ask what you truly came here to ask. I will answer as plainly as a young lord can.
“I chuckle and smirk at him. His wards are up in here so I can not hear his thoughts?”
SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +2)

Delfarius chuckles and lets his perception flow through the observatory. The wards close around Caelen’s mind like a sealed moonlit chamber, allowing no stray thought to cross their boundary.
He reads the structure clearly: the crown moldings suppress thought-speech, the threshold enforces the permission, and Caelen’s private mind remains entirely beyond his hearing while the wards stand.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
They are up. You cannot hear my thoughts in here, Delfarius, unless I choose to speak them aloud.
The moonstone gives a faint silver pulse, confirming the result rather than revealing anything hidden. Caelen watches Delfarius with open curiosity, waiting to see whether the limitation amuses him.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
For once, you have a room where guessing is not the same as knowing. Does that make the conversation safer, or merely more interesting?
Above them, the constellation-dome brightens along its silver lines. The observatory accepts the boundary without resistance, leaving Caelen’s thoughts his own and the spoken conversation entirely voluntary.
“I sit down next to the astrolabe and smirk. I read the weave of his soul and gather the thoughts he is blocking from me that way. Simple elven wards can not protect from my skill of the Endless Archives. To him I say, "What did you want to ask me, young lord now that you are safer from my prying?"”
SUCCESS (Great Spectral Analysis, rolled -2)
Delfarius sits beside the astrolabe, and his spectral sight slips beneath the observatory’s wards. The weave of Caelen’s soul opens like illuminated script, revealing the thoughts the moonlit chamber denies him.
The reading succeeds, but its finer threads demand concentration. Delfarius must hold several contradictory impressions in mind, leaving the exact origin of one fear uncertain while Caelen’s immediate thoughts become clear.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He bypassed the wards through the soul itself. I should be alarmed, but he is sitting beside me and asking rather than taking.

Delfarius
What did you want to ask me, young lord, now that you are safer from my prying?

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I wanted to ask whether your honesty has limits you actually respect. Now I know you can reach beyond my wards, I need to know you will choose not to do so whenever I ask for privacy.
Caelen turns toward him beneath the brightening constellations, wary but steady. The soul-reading gives Delfarius his answer, yet the unresolved thread leaves one question hanging: whether Caelen fears intrusion itself, or what he might reveal.
“"Hmm I like the sport of showing that I can do it if I want to. I can try if that would make you feel more at ease. Do you fear me doing so reading your thoughts, or what I might find if I dig too deep?" I lean in closer to him smirking and looking charming. "Besides, you asked me to come here immediately after you found out I could hear your thoughts. Not exactly the actions of a Lord who has nothing to hide..." i am still in a man shape to him, a charming irresistible man shape.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius
Hmm I like the sport of showing that I can do it if I want. I can try if that would make you feel more at ease. Do you fear me doing so reading your thoughts, or what I might find if I dig too deep?
Delfarius leans closer in his charming man-shape, smirking as the constellations gleam across his face. He keeps the offered threat playful, leaving the choice of answer with Caelen.

Delfarius
Besides, you asked me to come here immediately after you found out I could hear your thoughts. Not exactly the actions of a Lord who has nothing to hide...
Caelen’s moonstone gives a faint silver pulse, but the observatory wards remain closed around his mind. He studies Delfarius with wary amusement rather than retreating from the nearness.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I fear both, Delfarius. I fear the intrusion because my thoughts belong to me before they belong to anyone else. And I fear what you might find because some of them are not yet shaped into truths I am ready to share.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
As for asking you here, that was not the action of a lord with nothing to hide. It was the action of a lord who wanted privacy, honesty, and the chance to decide what you learn while I am beside you. If you want to prove you can stop, then stop when I ask.
“I put my hands up like a disarming gesture and chuckle softly to myself. I look over to his astrolabe and amusingly cause it to spin with a weave of magic that I do with no effort on my part. "Hmm have I pressed the word fore play too far? Hmm?" I put my head on his chest and look up at him as I rest my head there looking irresistible and sexy. I am still man shaped to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +0)

Delfarius
Hmm, have I pressed the word foreplay too far? Hmm?
Delfarius raises both hands in a disarming gesture and chuckles softly. With effortless magic, the astrolabe beside him begins to spin, its silver rings turning in graceful, interlocking orbits beneath the constellation-dome.
Still wearing the handsome mortal shape Caelen knows as Delfarius, he settles his head against the young lord’s chest and looks up with an irresistibly teasing expression.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You have pressed it far enough that I am beginning to suspect the word was never accidental. But I admit, the demonstration makes your argument compelling.
Caelen’s arm settles around Delfarius, holding him securely while the astrolabe continues its effortless rotation. The moonstone at his chest stays quiet, registering no falsehood in the playful exchange.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
If this is your version of foreplay, Delfarius, then I would like to know whether you intend to keep teasing me or finally ask what I want.
The spinning astrolabe casts shifting starlight across Caelen’s face. He looks down at Delfarius with amused anticipation, leaving the next move plainly open to him.
“"What do you want right now? Young Lord Caelen Valcaryn?" I say letting the lights sparkle in my icy blue eyes as I look up at him. I am still man shaped to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -1)

Delfarius
What do you want right now, young Lord Caelen Valcaryn?
The sparkling astrolabe-light catches in Delfarius’s icy blue eyes as he looks up from Caelen’s chest. Caelen’s teasing smile fades into candid consideration.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He is asking plainly, and he will respect the answer. I want him present, not performing another elegant escape.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Right now, I want you close and honest. I want another kiss, and I want to know what you are choosing to give me rather than guess at it.
Caelen turns fully toward him beneath the constellation-dome, one hand resting at Delfarius’s waist. The moonstone remains quiet as his answer settles without evasion.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I want this afternoon to belong to us, without titles deciding everything and without mystery doing all the work. Kiss me, then stay and let me ask you something real.
Caelen draws him nearer, leaving the choice unforced but unmistakable. Above them, the astrolabe continues its graceful orbit while the observatory holds their private conversation.
“I chuckle at him testing me with a loud thought directed at me. I pull his face down to meet mine and I give him a long lingering kiss while I put my hand through his dark hair. "A kiss only?" I say arching my eyebrow up like a question mark.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Delfarius chuckles at Caelen’s testing thought, then catches the young lord by the face and draws him into a long, lingering kiss. His fingers thread through Caelen’s dark hair as the astrolabe turns above them.

Delfarius
A kiss only?
Delfarius arches one eyebrow like a question mark and keeps Caelen close. The young lord’s breath catches, while his hands settle willingly against Delfarius’s waist.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
No, Delfarius. Not only a kiss. I want you to stay close, and I want to discover what else this afternoon can become without either of us pretending it is less than desire.
Caelen’s moonstone gives a soft silver pulse, finding no falsehood in his answer. He lifts his chin, inviting another kiss while keeping the choice plainly his.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You may keep asking me plainly, if you like. I will keep answering plainly too.
The observatory’s constellations brighten around them, and the astrolabe’s rings continue their graceful orbit as Caelen remains nestled against Delfarius, waiting with amused anticipation.
“"Do you have a soft thing for us to lay on in here so I can give you some more mind blowing sex?" I say plainly with a lustful grin.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Do you have a soft thing for us to lay on in here so I can give you some more mind-blowing sex?
Delfarius delivers the request plainly, his lustful grin making the intention unmistakable. Caelen’s ears redden, and his delighted laugh answers before his words do.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
There is a cushioned divan beneath the eastern windows, layered with velvet throws. It is private, warded, and entirely suitable for the afternoon you are proposing.
Caelen rises and leads him across the observatory. With a gesture, he draws the heavy curtains, strengthens the privacy wards, and turns the divan into a broad, soft resting place.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
There. No family, servants, or wandering thoughts will interrupt us. You may give me exactly what you promised, Delfarius, and I will tell you plainly what I want.
Caelen settles onto the velvet-covered divan and reaches for Delfarius with eager, freely offered affection. The observatory wards dim the stars above them, granting the pair complete privacy.
“I chuckle at him still trying to be in control of this. I find it amusing and charming at the moment. I let my grin grow and sit next to him. "What would the young Lord request next then? Hmm?" I slowly start to take my robe off letting my skin being exposed fill him with anticipation of the activities to follow. Still a sexy man shape to him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius chuckles at Caelen’s attempt to remain composed, then sits beside him on the cushioned divan. His grin widens as he begins slipping his robe from his shoulders, revealing the handsome mortal shape Caelen knows.

Delfarius
What would the young Lord request next then? Hmm?
The robe slips lower, baring Delfarius’s skin by deliberate degrees. Caelen’s ears flush as his gaze follows, anticipation replacing his careful attempt at control.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
The young lord requests that you stop making him wait while pretending this is a question. Come closer, Delfarius, and let me decide what I want with you in reach.
Caelen draws Delfarius nearer by the waist, his touch eager but unforced. The privacy wards deepen around the divan, sealing the observatory against interruption while the stars turn silently overhead.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I want another kiss first. Then I want you to keep teasing me until I tell you to stop, and I want you present enough to hear every request I make.
His fingers settle at Delfarius’s bare side, and Caelen meets his eyes with bright, hungry amusement. The divan waits beneath them, soft and private, while Caelen’s invitation remains unmistakably his own.
“I reach down on Caelen's bare chest and give him a warm lingering kiss on his skin. I let my finger trace over his slender frame. I let my amusement linger until Caelen realizes he gave me the orders with his cloak and coat on and now he is only in gold trim silk boxers. Caelen looks at me amused wondering how I got his clothing off without him even noticing. My grin grows more lustful and amused as I look up at him. "Teasing and kiss...anything else young lord? hmm?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Delfarius’s hand settles on Caelen’s bare chest, and he gives the elf a warm, lingering kiss against his skin. One finger traces the slender line of Caelen’s frame.
Amusement lingers in Delfarius’s eyes as Caelen looks down and realizes his coat and cloak have vanished, leaving only gold-trimmed silk boxers. The moonstone at his chest glimmers harmlessly.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He undressed me without my noticing. I should be offended, but that grin makes the discovery far too entertaining.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I gave you orders while fully dressed, and somehow you have left me in my underclothes. Was that part of your interpretation of staying present?
Caelen’s question carries no alarm. He catches Delfarius’s tracing hand and holds it lightly against his chest, his amused gaze inviting an answer rather than demanding one.

Delfarius
Teasing and kiss... anything else, young lord? Hmm?
“I look him in the eyes with a twinkle in my eyes. "Yes you are presently now unclothed. Yes." I say with an amused expression. I give his pointed ears a soft nibble and let him see how I did it by doing it much much much slowly with the weave of magic to my own robes. "And now I am presently disrobed. Yes." I am still a sexy impossible man shape to the young lord.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Magic, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Yes, you are presently unclothed. Yes.
Delfarius’s eyes gleam with playful approval. He gives Caelen’s pointed ear a soft nibble, then slowly unwinds the magic holding his own robes together, letting each fold loosen visibly and deliberately.

Delfarius
And now I am presently disrobed. Yes.
The robe slips away by degrees, revealing the handsome, impossible man-shape Caelen knows as Delfarius. The deliberate pace leaves no mystery about how the spell works, only the pleasure of watching it unfold.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You have turned undressing into a lecture, and somehow made me grateful for every careful demonstration.
Caelen’s ears redden as his gaze travels over Delfarius, but his hands remain warm and willing at his waist. The observatory wards hold their privacy while the astrolabe turns above them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Now that we are equally disrobed, come closer. I want another kiss, and I want to see whether your magic is as patient when you are the one being touched.
He draws Delfarius toward the velvet divan, smiling with bright, unguarded anticipation. His invitation remains clear, freely offered, and entirely his own.
“"Hmm that is the question isn't it?" I say teasing as I crawl on top of him and let my weight rest gently on top of him. I look down at him, my little pillow princess below me. I chuckle softly. "And the better question is what is the young lord going to do to distract my magics?" I am still man shaped.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius
Hmm, that is the question, isn't it? And the better question is what is the young lord going to do to distract my magics?
Delfarius crawls gently atop Caelen, resting his weight against him. Both men wear only their boxers, and Delfarius’s handsome mortal shape remains unchanged as he looks down with a soft chuckle.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He calls me his pillow princess and expects me to distract magic while lying beneath him. I can work with that.
Caelen’s arms settle around Delfarius’s bare back, steady and welcoming. The observatory wards preserve their privacy while the astrolabe turns in slow, silver circles above them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
By remaining beneath you, apparently. Though if I am to distract your magic, I expect your full attention in return.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I could begin with another kiss, then remind you that magic is not the only thing capable of holding a young lord’s attention. Will you let me distract you properly?
His smile turns daring beneath Delfarius, while his hands remain gentle at Delfarius’s sides. Caelen meets his gaze without shrinking, offering invitation rather than command.

New Gift: Echo of True Self
“"Hmm." I say with a raised eyebrow. 'Interesting that you heard my thoughts truly.' I think loudly to my own thoughts alone. "I think the magics could be distracted with a kiss as long as it lead to more than just that." I let my hands linger down his chest until I can feel how exactly pleased he is with this display of impossible sexiness above him.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Hmm. Interesting that you heard my thoughts truly. I think the magics could be distracted with a kiss, as long as it leads to more than just that.
Delfarius’s raised eyebrow sharpens the invitation. His hands linger down Caelen’s bare chest, feeling the pleased tension beneath his touch as the observatory wards hold their silence.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
He is teasing me and asking plainly at once. I want the kiss, and I want to discover how much more he means to offer.
Caelen’s breath catches beneath Delfarius, his gold-trimmed boxers bright against the velvet. His hands slide up Delfarius’s back, welcoming the closeness without taking the choice from him.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Then distract them properly, Delfarius. Kiss me, stay present, and let this become more than a clever demonstration. I will tell you what I want as we go.
Caelen draws him into a deep, eager kiss. The astrolabe turns above them while the wards soften around the divan, preserving their privacy as Caelen’s willing touch answers Delfarius’s invitation.
“"Hmmm." I give him exactly what he wants. My undivided attentive attentions to his body as we make long passionate love in the glow of the observatory with the astrolabe humming softly in the background. When he has came and crescendo into the release of all of his pent up passions, he lays under the crumpled sheets that covered the divan spent and breathless. I reach into the void and pull out my little impossible future device and take a few measured drags off of my multi colored mod looking down at his fulfilled eyes. I am still man shaped.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +0)

The observatory glows softly around them. After Delfarius gives Caelen his full attention, their lovemaking leaves the young lord spent and breathless beneath the crumpled velvet sheets, the astrolabe humming overhead.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You are infuriatingly attentive when you choose to be. I had forgotten how thoroughly you can make the rest of the world disappear.
Caelen lies back, flushed and fulfilled, one arm resting across the rumpled sheets. His moonstone charm glimmers faintly, finding only honest satisfaction in his quiet expression.
Still wearing his handsome mortal shape, Delfarius reaches into the void and withdraws the small multicolored mod. He takes several measured drags, releasing sweet colored vapor into the starlit air.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
That impossible device again? You look entirely too pleased with yourself, Delfarius. Come lie beside me before you turn the observatory into a smoking den.
The astrolabe continues its quiet orbit above them. Caelen reaches toward Delfarius across the sheets, his fulfilled gaze warm with amusement and an invitation for the afternoon to continue.
“I roll my eyes and take another drag and lay next to him. I am still my impossible man shape. I am pleased with myself, but not as weary and spent as he is.”
Delfarius rolls his eyes, takes another measured drag from the multicolored device, and releases a sweet ribbon of colored vapor into the observatory’s starlit air.
Still wearing his impossible man-shape, he settles beside Caelen beneath the crumpled velvet sheets. The young lord is spent and breathless, while Delfarius remains comfortably alert and pleased with himself.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
There you are. Much better. Though you look entirely too satisfied for someone who has just thoroughly ruined my ability to move.
Caelen shifts closer despite his exhaustion and rests his head against Delfarius’s shoulder. The moonstone at his chest glimmers faintly, finding only honest amusement and contentment.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Keep that smug expression if you like. I want to ask you something while I still have enough breath to make you answer.
The astrolabe hums overhead, its silver rings turning lazily above the divan. Caelen’s hand finds Delfarius’s beneath the sheets, holding him there with tired, deliberate affection.
“"is that a challenge to see if you can stand another go around?" i say smugly as I take another drag.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius
Is that a challenge, to see if you can stand another go around?
Delfarius takes another measured drag from the multicolored device, releasing sweet vapor above the rumpled sheets. His smirk turns the question into an unmistakable dare.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
It is, apparently. Though I reserve the right to blame you if my legs refuse to cooperate afterward.
Caelen pushes himself up on one elbow, flushed and visibly tired, yet his bright eyes hold eager amusement. He reaches for Delfarius beneath the sheets.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
But if you are asking whether I want another round, the answer is yes. Give me a moment to recover, and then prove that confidence deserves its reputation.
The astrolabe continues its lazy orbit overhead as Caelen draws Delfarius closer, accepting the challenge without surrendering control of its pace. His hand settles warmly against Delfarius’s chest.
“"i would not want you to sprain yourself, what do yo want to ask?" I say amused, brushing his hair from his face. I am still just a sexy man taking a drag off of an impossible device of some type while the cloud from it changes color around us.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled -2)

Delfarius
I would not want you to sprain yourself. What do you want to ask?
Delfarius brushes Caelen’s dark hair from his flushed face, then takes another drag from the impossible device. Sweet vapor shifts from violet to blue around them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I want to ask what you are protecting me from when you wear Farius’s face. Not your name, now. The reason you believe my life needs your disguise.
Caelen’s fingers rest against Delfarius’s chest, affectionate but no longer playful. The moonstone beneath his signet chain gives a faint silver shimmer, sharpening the seriousness of his question.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I am not asking you to expose every danger or abandon your caution. I want to know whether you see me as fragile, or whether you simply fear what your presence might change.
His trust remains, but the question places a cost on the afternoon’s intimacy: Caelen will remember whether Delfarius answers him as an equal or retreats behind another charming half-truth.
“"I do not think you are fragile. I just think that things I have set into motion are." I smirk at him. "I wear this so you don't run in fear of the monster in your bed." I laugh softly but a bit edged. I am still just a man shape to him, taking one last drag before I fold it back into the pocket of the void where I keep it.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Delfarius
I do not think you are fragile. I just think that the things I have set into motion are. I wear this so you do not run in fear of the monster in your bed.
Delfarius smirks at him, then laughs softly, though an edged note remains beneath the humor. He takes one last drag from the multicolored device and folds it into the pocket of the void.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
I am not running. And I am not mistaking your disguise for proof that you are harmless. I understand now that you wear it to keep your dangers from becoming mine.
Caelen’s hand settles over Delfarius’s chest, steady and warm. His moonstone remains quiet, while the observatory wards hold their private silence around them.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
That does not make me fragile, Delfarius. It makes me someone you are choosing to protect from consequences I did not choose. I can respect that, provided you do not decide my limits for me.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
But if the monster in your bed is still the man who listens when I say no, stays when I ask him to stay, and tells me enough truth to choose freely, then I have no reason to flee.
He draws Delfarius closer against the rumpled velvet, no longer demanding the disguise disappear. Instead, Caelen treats it as a boundary offered in care, and waits to learn what lies beyond it at his own pace.
“I look up and notice the astrolabe is still spinning. I look at it closely then laugh softly. It is the same one that once was in a place in a long long cycle ago in a palace in the city of Corners, isn't it? If it is I remark that it was the reason he heard my thoughts.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Investigation, rolled +1)

Delfarius
That astrolabe is still spinning. It is the same one from a palace in the city of Corners, long ago, isn't it? It was why you heard my thoughts.
Delfarius studies the astrolabe closely. Its silver rings bear the same minute constellation-cuts and inward-turning geometry as the ancient instrument, though the observatory has taught it a gentler orbit.
The investigation settles the memory: this is that astrolabe, carried forward through a vast cycle and remade without losing its central pattern. Its turning once pierced the palace’s thought-wards.
Caelen follows Delfarius’s gaze, then looks back at him. The realization changes his expression from amused suspicion to startled recognition of how old the connection truly is.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
The palace in Corners. I thought that was only another impossible story you carried behind your smile. So the astrolabe was listening before we ever entered this observatory?
Above the divan, the astrolabe’s rings align with a constellation absent from the current sky. A faint silver thread reaches toward Caelen’s moonstone, then stops at the boundary he chose.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Then I understand why you recognized the room so quickly. Tell me, Delfarius, what else did that palace teach the astrolabe about you?
“I hold my hand out to it and see a old version of me watching amused with a cup of coffee in his hand as we both stop it from spinning. I notice my past older reflection without Lord Caelen noticing the rift in time and space. I laugh loudly throwing my head back. I am still just man shaped. "Archivist, remember, Caelen." His necklace does not sense a falsehood in my statement.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Void Manipulation, rolled -2)

Delfarius extends his hand toward the astrolabe. Its silver rings slow beneath his will, while a narrow rift opens beside them, revealing an older version of him holding a steaming cup of coffee.
The older Delfarius watches with amused familiarity. Together, their hands stop the astrolabe completely, freezing its constellation-cuts between one breath and the next while Caelen remains unaware of the temporal seam.

Delfarius
Archivist, remember, Caelen.
Delfarius throws his head back and laughs. The sound fills the observatory, disguising the faint crackle of the rift as the older reflection raises his coffee in silent congratulations.
Void pressure bites through Delfarius’s outstretched hand, draining its warmth and leaving his fingers numb. The cost settles there, precise and temporary, while the astrolabe remains claimed and still.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Archivist? That sounds like a title you invented to make the impossible sound respectable. What exactly am I meant to remember?
Caelen’s moonstone stays silent against his chest, accepting the statement as true. Behind him, unseen by his eyes, the older reflection sips coffee while the rift holds steady.
✓ Quest Accepted
Explain what the astrolabe learned about Delfarius
“As the blades stop the older version gives me a knowing smirk then the rift closes. "Always so insufferably smug." I laugh as It closes. I am still man shaped to Caelen. I laugh a bit more as I walk up and touch the edges of it seeing where the old chrono keyblade once opened the rift. i look over to his simple moonstone charm. While it was spinning the astrolabe reached out to it and he could hear me through the Endless Archives then in that long ago past. My past self helped this mortal hear my comment about Lord Caelen being a pillow princess. "Amusing." I all I say after all of my investigation.”
SUCCESS (Great Spectral Analysis, rolled -2)

The older Delfarius gives him a knowing smirk as the frozen rift folds shut. Its last silver edge vanishes, leaving the astrolabe suspended in absolute stillness.

Delfarius
Always so insufferably smug.
Delfarius laughs and walks to the sealed space, fingertips tracing its boundary. Spectral sight reveals the old chrono-keyblade’s opening geometry woven through the air, fully understood now, though the intricate pattern consumes several quiet moments of concentration.
The investigation clarifies the connection: while the astrolabe turned, its silver reach touched Caelen’s moonstone and carried Delfarius’s voice through the Endless Archives into that distant past. His past self then helped the mortal hear the remark about being a pillow princess.
Delfarius’s gaze shifts to the simple moonstone charm resting against Caelen’s chest. The charm remains harmless and quiet, its role as a receptive bridge now established, though the exact path through the Archives remains difficult to reproduce.

Delfarius
Amusing.
“I raise my eyebrow and nod knowing I would do it again just to fuck with myself. I laugh then settle next to the young lord. "I should probably go, I am sure your family will return and I don't think you want your grandfather seeing me or you like this in this place." I smirk at him. I am still just a man to his sight.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +1)

Delfarius raises an eyebrow, nods as though he would gladly repeat the temporal mischief, and laughs. He settles beside Caelen beneath the observatory’s fading starlight.

Delfarius
I should probably go. I am sure your family will return, and I do not think you want your grandfather seeing us like this in this place.
His mortal guise remains seamless to Caelen’s sight. The moonstone rests quietly against the young lord’s chest as the privacy wards hold, though distant estate bells mark the afternoon’s advancing hour.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
You are probably right. My grandfather could return sooner than expected, and explaining why I am half-dressed beside you would be unpleasantly memorable.
Caelen gathers the velvet throws around himself and reaches for his discarded coat. His smile stays warm, accepting the practical retreat without mistaking it for rejection.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
Go before the household returns, Delfarius. I will send word when I can meet privately again. And next time, try not to leave me unable to walk before saying farewell.
He gives Delfarius a lingering kiss beneath the quiet astrolabe, then releases him with an amused, lingering glance. The eastern garden door waits open beyond the observatory.
“"i make no promises." I say with a smirk as I walk out with impeccable timing as his grandfather walks in from inside the manner to see Lord Caelen sitting under the blankets, but does not see me walking away.”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Stealth, rolled +1)

Delfarius
I make no promises.
With a smirk and impeccable timing, Delfarius slips through the eastern door as an elderly elf man enters from the manor. The wards conceal his departure completely; the grandfather sees only Caelen beneath the blankets.

Caelen's grandfather
Caelen? Why are you under blankets in the observatory? I expected you to be studying the eastern charts.
Beyond the open door, Delfarius crosses the garden unseen and unheard. Inside, Caelen gathers the velvet throws around himself, his flushed face composed just as footsteps approach the observatory.

Lord Caelen Valcaryn
The charts proved more exhausting than expected, Grandfather. I needed a private rest, and the wards kept the room secure.

Caelen's grandfather
Then rest briefly, but dress before your aunt returns. The family council meets tonight, and I expect you presentable.
The eastern garden swallows the last trace of Delfarius’s passage. Behind him, the observatory door closes, leaving Caelen to face his grandfather with the afternoon’s secret intact.
