Into Orosia's Glittering Avenue

Delfarius steps through the west gate of Orosia into a blaze of polished stone and market noise. Sunlight flashes off gold hems, gem clasps, and dwarven beard-rings as the avenue opens wide before him.

His silk robes and ruby rings read as wealth on first glance, just enough to pass among the city’s proudest strutters. Nobles in lacquered cloaks and ironed brocade parade past one another, each trying to look more expensive than the next.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The most ostentatious dick measuring contest.

He walks on with a smirk, measuring silk, posture, and entourage the way a blade measures cloth. A merchant prince with three attendants. A dwarf matron with a ring-heavy hand and a guarded purse. A young lord trying too hard to look bored.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Where can the trouble begin?

A few heads turn at the chuckle, but the crowd only ripples and reforms around him. Ahead, the avenue narrows toward a fountain court where a mounted herald waits beneath a banner of Orosia, while a nearby goldsmith’s stall begins to ring with fresh hammers.

“I walk up to a stand selling gaudy mirrors. I catch my reflection in the mirrors. "Hmm" I muse to myself as I look them over.”

Delfarius stops at the mirror stall and studies the glittering panes. His reflection returns the same smirk, multiplied across cheap silver glass, while the vendor keeps haggling with another buyer a few steps away.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Hmm.

“I frown at the quality of the silver glass. I walk away and look towards the Inn/Tavern to be seen in here in Orosia. I walk up to the intricate carved door and door frame in rich mahogany and the building it's self being polished marble. I chuckle as I walk in, the guard at the door hardly giving me a glance as I walk in. 'Ahh a feast of souls in here, each one desperate to be something they are not.' I think to my thoughts alone. 'But whom amongst them all is the most desperate?'”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled +1)

Into Orosia's Glittering Avenue

Delfarius turns from the mirror stall and leaves its cheap brightness behind. The avenue opens before him in polished marble and carved wealth, and an inn with a dark mahogany door catches his eye among the finer façades.

He crosses the street at an unhurried pace, and the guard by the entrance barely shifts his gaze. Inside, candlelight and perfume spill out in a warm blur, full of titled voices and careful laughter.

Delfarius

Delfarius

A feast of souls, each one desperate to be something they are not.

Delfarius steps through the doorway as if he belongs there, and no one stops him. The room accepts him, then begins to reveal itself by the way heads tilt, hands tighten, and smiles strain at the edges.

At a side table, one young noble sits too rigidly, with a jeweled ring turned again and again in anxious fingers. Nearby, a matron laughs too loudly over untouched wine, while a clerk in velvet keeps glancing toward the exit.

Among them, the ring-turning noble looks the most brittle, like he might crack if spoken to in the wrong tone.

The inn settles around Delfarius, waiting. The guard looks away, the room keeps breathing, and the brittle noble notices him at last.

“I go to a booth that is in the corner, private, hushed and not well watched. If there is anyone in the I fold my arms and let them see my icy stare that lets them know they should move away from my booth.”

The Young Noble

Through Delfarius’s eyes, the corner booth sits half-hidden behind a hanging tapestry, its polished wood dimmer than the rest of the room. He crosses to it with calm certainty, and the nearest pair of patrons notice at once and look away.

A young noble occupies the booth alone, shoulders tight over a untouched cup. Delfarius folds his arms in the doorway of the seat, and the noble’s fingers stop turning the jeweled ring.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

He looks like trouble that already knows my name.

The noble slides one hand off the table and shifts toward the aisle, leaving the bench open. His gaze drops first, then rises again with careful obedience.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

Of course. I did not mean to intrude on this table.

Delfarius takes the booth as if it has been waiting for him all evening. The room’s murmur thins around the corner, and the matron’s laugh softens into the background.

New Gift: Noble-Corruptor's Insight

“I look at this young Noble. Why does he look like he is in rags? Or is that how I just see him. I blink and the young noble is a rich red doublet with velvet breeches and gold trim. I smirk. "You may stay if you want, I may be able to help you with your troubles, or at the very least listen for a moment."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius studies the young noble up close, and the rags of his first impression slip away beneath a sharper glance. The fabric resolves into a rich red doublet, velvet breeches, and gold trim, neat enough to belong in a brighter hall than this one.

Delfarius

Delfarius

He is dressed better than he first looks.

The noble catches the look and stills, his hand tightening once around the jeweled ring before he lets it rest on the table.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

If you mean to mock me, my lord, I would rather know it plainly.

Delfarius

Delfarius

You may stay. I might help with your troubles, or at least listen for a moment.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

...Then I will stay.

He eases back into the booth, shoulders loosening by a fraction as the room’s noise presses softly against the tapestry.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

You look like someone who already knows what a man is worth. Tell me, do you always offer kindness this way?

“"Tell me, do you always look this anxious when you are surrounded by your peers?" I smirk and gesture towards the bar maid and ask her for a cup of coffee and then I order whatever Dorian like to drink the most.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Delfarius

Delfarius

Do you always look this anxious when you are among your peers?

Delfarius tips two fingers toward the barmaid, then settles back as if the booth itself belongs to him.

The barmaid glides over, takes the order with a quick nod, and leaves the scent of roasted beans and spice behind her.

The young noble’s hand pauses at his ring. His posture eases, but only enough to answer without looking foolish.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

Only when I think the room is judging me. Which is often, in rooms like this.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

You ask that as if you never care what any of them think.

Above them, the inn’s rafters, lanterns, and polished beams fall into a neat grid of light and shadow, while patrons drift around the booth like pieces around a fixed stone.

“"Well, Dorian Elsyin, I do not." I smirk into my coffee after I add a bit of ashes from the former light followers in it, unseen. I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Delfarius

Delfarius

Well, Dorian Elsyin, I do not.

Delfarius stirs a pinch of ash into the coffee before it reaches him, keeping the motion small enough to pass for idle habit.

He lifts the cup with the same easy smirk, a plain mortal at ease among plain mortal luxuries.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

Dorian? ...You noticed that.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

No one here says my name right without wanting something.

His ring stills between his fingers. He studies Delfarius with fresh caution, but the answer has drawn him in instead of driving him away.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

If you are not here to flatter me, or mock me, then what sort of man are you?

“"What troubles you, Dorian?" I gesture towards the drink I ordered for him. He takes a drink and wonders how I knew exactly what to order him then he tells me what is troubling him if he trusts me. I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Delfarius tips his cup a fraction toward Dorian, a silent offer wrapped in calm.

Dorian hesitates, then takes the cup. The ash-dark coffee stains his upper lip as he drinks, and his brows knit at the taste.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

How does he know that? He even knew I would take it.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

What troubles me? If I trust you, perhaps I can say it plainly.

He lowers the cup, shoulders loosening by a breath, as if the question has finally given him somewhere to put his fear.

The Young Noble

The Young Noble

My house is being watched, and my father means to bind me to a bargain I do not want. I do not know whether I am meant to be heir, leverage, or sacrifice.

Around them, the inn keeps its courteous noise. Above the booth, lanternlight gleams on the table while Delfarius sits as though he belongs among lesser men, entirely unremarkable to any careless eye.

✓ Quest Accepted

Corrupt Dorian Elsyin

“I lean back and look over to the other drink I had ordered for Dorian then back to my coffee cup he has taken. I smirk. 'Well I guess it is time to see what effects the ashes have on mortals' I think to my thoughts alone. I stoke my chin hairs slowly with a vague amusement curling on my lips. "What sort of bargain? I am going to need to know more, Dorian. That is your name? Correct?" I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +1)

Delfarius leans back, and the booth seems to widen around the space his calm occupies. His coffee sits between them like a dark little seal, while the second untouched cup waits near Dorian’s elbow.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Ash shows more on mortal tongues than on mine.

Delfarius

Delfarius

What bargain is it? I need more, Dorian. That is your name, correct?

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

Yes. Dorian. And the bargain, it is my father’s hand on my life, and other hands waiting to close around it.

He glances toward the room’s brighter tables, then lowers his voice as if the wood itself might repeat him. His ring stops turning.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If I refuse, I lose standing. If I agree, I become a token in someone else’s game. I do not know which is the slower death.

The answer settles over the booth. Around them, the inn keeps its polished murmur, but Dorian’s shoulders ease into something more dangerous than fear, a reluctant trust that has already begun to lean toward Delfarius.

“I still regard Dorian with a vague amused look. I am still stroking my chin hairs. I watch his soul weave unseen and unfelt. Do the ashes effect him or does it do nothing besides perhaps give him indigestion later? "That does sound like an awful predicament to find one's self in." I say as I lean in closer to him saying in a small whisper. "Shame something could not just happen to your father, so the deal would be not made in his name, but controlled by your ideals and whims instead." I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

From above the booth, Delfarius’s lean becomes a careful angle in the crowded room. His attention settles on Dorian like a hooked shadow, and the ash in the coffee gives off a faint, bitter shimmer as he tests the young noble’s weave without moving a muscle.

Delfarius

Delfarius

That does sound like an awful predicament.

The ash reaches Dorian in a thin, invisible thread, and the reaction is immediate. His shoulders twitch once, then ease, as if his stomach turns over rather than his mind.

Delfarius

Delfarius

It would be a shame if something happened to your father, and the bargain never took his name at all.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

That is not comfort, but it is a door.

Dorian’s expression shifts toward wary interest, no sign of enchantment taking hold beyond a sour swallow and a glance at the cup. The ash does nothing to his soul weave that Delfarius can exploit, but it sits in him like grit, a nuisance, not a chain.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

You say that like you are offering me a better name for the bargain.

“I scoff a small dismissive gesture and pull the ashes unseen by his eyes or senses into my own coffee cup in my hand. Dorian does not notice that I did not have it in my hand earlier or that the gesture was a bit of magical weave. "Your name on your own life seems like a better bargain, I would think if I were you." I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

SUCCESS (Superb Arcana, rolled +1)

Delfarius gives a small, dismissive scoff, and the ash slips free of Dorian’s cup as if the air itself has gone thin around it. It threads unseen into the cup in Delfarius’s hand, leaving Dorian with only bitter water and a sudden, empty look toward the table.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Your own name on your own life seems like the better bargain, if I were you.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

That is not an offer a careful man makes by accident.

The ash settles in Delfarius’s cup, dark and obedient. Around the booth, the inn’s noise keeps its distance, but Dorian’s ring stops turning for the first time since Delfarius noticed him.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

He says it like he can move names as easily as coin.

Dorian leans in a fraction, wary interest sharpening into real attention. The nearby patrons remain faces in motion and talk, blind to the quiet theft at the booth.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If I am to hear a better bargain, then speak plainly. What do you want from me?

“I smirk and take a sip of my ash-coffee and arch my eyebrow. "Better thing to ask me is what I can do for you, a man who could make names not even move, but be removed." I let out a low laugh quiet enough so it does not travel past our booth. Dorian wonders if I can hear his thoughts since my words mirror his inner thoughts so clearly. I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. Perhaps a dangerous mortal man.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Delfarius answers with a thin smirk and lifts the darkened cup. The ash rides the rim like a settled oath as he takes a measured sip, unhurried and absolutely at ease.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The better question is what I can do for you. A man who can make names not move, but vanish.

His low laugh stays trapped inside the booth, lost under the clink and murmur of the inn. Across from him, Dorian’s posture tightens, then eases into wary fascination.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

He says the shape of my fear before I do. Does he hear thoughts, or simply read men too well?

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If you are not prying into my head, then you are frighteningly close to it. Either way, I think I should listen.

Dorian’s ring stills against the table. He studies Delfarius like a door he has finally noticed in the wall, while the ash in the cup glints black beneath the lanternlight.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

Tell me, then. If a name can be taken apart, what does your bargain cost?

“i know already, but it is a normal mortal thing to ask questions about things like you do not know. "What is with the ring, Dorian?" I smirk. I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius lets the question hang, then asks his own with easy disregard. The booth seems to shrink around the tiny motion of his cup and Dorian’s sudden stillness.

Delfarius

Delfarius

What is with the ring, Dorian?

Dorian glances down at the jeweled band as if surprised to find it there at all. His fingers tighten once, then ease.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

This? It marks me for an audience my father arranged. Not a wedding, not quite a chain, but close enough to feel like one.

He turns the ring slowly, revealing a pale inner sigil worked beneath the stone. His voice lowers, careful and honest.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

House Elsyin likes its bargains visible. The right hand wears them, so everyone remembers who paid and who was paid for.

Dorian looks back up at Delfarius, fascinated despite himself. The ash in the cup lies dark and motionless between them like a second, smaller secret.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If you know rings, then tell me plainly. Would you call this a promise, or a shackle?

“"Would you meet with them, if your father had not arranged it?" I arch my eyebrow like a question.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Delfarius asks it lightly, and the question lands heavier than the cup between them. Dorian straightens, then gives a small, surprised laugh that fades into thought.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

Not if it were mine to refuse. Then I would call it a meeting, and choose who sits opposite me.

His hand leaves the ring at last. He opens his palm on the table, as if showing there is nothing hidden in the gesture now.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

House Elsyin wraps every gift in a leash. If I am honest, I came here expecting one or the other, gift or leash.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

You have not done either yet. That is the strange part.

Above them, the inn’s upper gallery crosses in shadow. The stair, the booth, and the aisle all sit in one cramped geometry, while the ash in the cup holds still like a dark eye.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

So. If you are not my father’s arrangement, then tell me what sort of encounter this is meant to become.

“I lean in closer, my smirk growing a bit wider and laugh a low quiet laugh that does not leave the booth. To all the other patrons in this inn I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. Dorian Elsyin feels that senses that I am not a normal mortal man. Maybe it is in the way my eyes glitter more in the pale light. Or perhaps it is in how the shadows seem to lean towards me in the booth. "I don't believe in wrapping every leash as a gift. I am enough of the gift, whether it is a leash or a dagger."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +0)

Delfarius leans in over the cup, and the booth seems to contract around his low laugh. To the room, he reads as just another well-dressed man in shadow and candlelight, but the shadows at the table edge gather closer than they should.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

No mortal at all, not quite. That is not a trick of the lanterns.

Delfarius

Delfarius

I do not believe in leashes disguised as gifts. I am gift enough, leash or dagger.

The words settle cleanly between them. Dorian’s shoulders loosen by a fraction, and his open hand stays on the table instead of retreating to the ring.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

Then this is not a trap, nor a courtesy. It is a choice. Strange, for a stranger to offer one where my house offers none.

Across the booth, the ash in the coffee lies still, dark as polished glass. A nearby patron glances over, sees only a quiet conversation, and looks away again.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If you truly mean to sit opposite me, tell me the shape of it. Meeting, bargain, or warning?

“"I have always preferred the term, deal. Arrangement? Certainty not a warning, unless you mean to flee now and warn someone I am here. They would think you mad though. I mean what power would seek out a meek mortal in a tavern? It is only a story a bard could spin." I take a sip of my coffee. I sigh satisfied into the space at the brew. "Quid pro quo. I do for you, you do for me." I raise my eyebrow as I look over to him.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +3)

The booth feels smaller for it. Delfarius turns the exchange into terms, and the air around the table tightens into something almost formal.

Delfarius

Delfarius

A deal, then. An arrangement, certainty, not a warning. Unless you mean to flee and warn the room that I am here.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian huffs a quiet, incredulous breath, then lets it out as a guarded smile. "If you were meant as a story, I would have named you a menace already."

Delfarius

Delfarius

Quid pro quo. I do for you, you do for me.

Delfarius sips the coffee, and the ash in it seems to sink deeper, like it recognizes a stronger hand. Dorian’s fingers stop worrying the ring and spread flat on the table instead.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

"Then say the shape of it clearly," Dorian says. His tone steadies, and curiosity edges into intent. "If I answer, what does your side of the bargain actually look like?"

Above them, the lanternlight glances off the polished tabletop and the untouched cup beside the ash-dark one. Dorian’s attention stays on Delfarius, not the room, and that is a choice the inn can see.

“I place the cup down softly and gesture openly at the table. "A father whom only has one heir, a young Dorian, mysteriously falls dead. No ill of any hand. Poor Dorian is left to decide for himself alone his own life, the fate of his name alone. How terrible for our hero Dorian. All that wealth, and no one to choose for him how to spend it." I smirk then take a sip of my coffee. "What will he do I wonder?" I raise my eyebrow and look over to Dorian with an amused expression.”

He smirks, drinks, and lets the ash sink with the sip. The suggestion is poison wrapped as mercy, and the booth goes very still around it.

Dorian’s breath catches, then steadies. "You say it like a liberation."

Dorian Elsyin

His gaze holds on Delfarius, intent sharpening. "If that is the bargain, then you are offering me the first honest door my house has ever seen."

Around the table, the inn keeps breathing through its velvet hush, but the shape of Dorian’s future has visibly changed. He is no longer asking what Delfarius means. He is weighing which life survives the answer.

“"Sit down before you draw eyes to yourself." I say amused. "Honest, yes. Innocent hmm" I smirk.”

Dorian obeys at once, folding into the bench with a careful, private movement. The jeweled ring taps once against the table, then stills beside the ash-dark coffee.

Dorian Elsyin

Honest, yes. Innocent, hmm. I am beginning to think those are not the same thing with you.

He leans in, voice lowered, the first heat of defiance gone from his shoulders. Around them, the candlelight and velvet noise of the inn close back over the booth, as if granting them a pocket of secrecy.

Dorian Elsyin

If you mean to speak plain, then do it. I can hear a trap, and I am still here.

Delfarius’s smirk widens over the settling ash in the cup. Dorian’s fingers uncurl from the table edge, and his attention stays fixed, wary but willing, on the man across from him.

“I swirl my finger over my cup and stir the ashes more in my cup with a whisp of magic and then take a sip. I notice it is getting empty then I summon more into the cup. "I don't need wealth, or coin. Jewels are nice but." I hold my hand out and in my bare hand appears a priceless star cut diamond that glitters with impossible clarity. A thin bead of blood surfaces where their hands part. Delfarius catches it cleanly, shaping the first dark band between his fingers while Dorian watches without pulling away.

The band closes on itself, seamless and black, with Dorian’s blood turning like a hidden thread inside it. Delfarius sets a second flawless diamond into the setting, and the little piece of wealth looks suddenly ceremonial.

Delfarius nudges the diamond closer, and Dorian follows it with his eyes before looking back up, slower now, like a door unlatching inside him. The cover story settles into place between them, neat and usable.

A surveyor. A mine. That can be repeated.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

Then I was met by a surveyor about a new mine, and I had no idea my father was failing so badly.

He takes the diamond as if it weighs more than gold, then touches it to his temple. The gesture is half ritual, half surrender, and his shoulders loosen a fraction.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If that is what people ask, I will say I learned where to find more like it.

The ash in Delfarius’s cup stirs once, obedient to the same hand that moved the bargain. Across the booth, Dorian’s fingers hover near the dark band and ring, testing the shape of his new story.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

And if they ask why I believe it, what do I tell them about you?

Around them, the inn keeps breathing in low voices and clinking glass, while the booth holds its private silence for one more answer.

“"Put on the ring, Dorian." I smirk.”

The ring turns once in Dorian’s fingers, then settles open on his palm as if waiting for consent instead of taking it.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Put it on, Dorian.

Dorian’s breath catches. He slides the ring onto his hand, and the dark band at his finger answers with a faint, satisfied gleam.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

So that is what this feels like. Not a trap. A mark with teeth.

He studies his own hand, then looks up with a steadier sort of relief, the kind that comes from choosing the chain before someone else does.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

If I speak for you in Orosia, I need to know what name I am giving them. Merchant? Patron? Monster?

The booth holds still around them, ash darkening one cup, gold catching on glass beyond the railing, while Dorian waits for the shape of the lie he will carry.

“I sit back down and let out a low laugh that does not leave the booth at his remark of a monster. "Call me an long lost friend of the family." Once you have finished your father's parting affairs and everything is firmly in your hands, I will meet with you and we will see from there."”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled +2)

Delfarius leans back into the booth with a low laugh that stays trapped between the cushions and the ash-dark cup. The sound is quiet, almost companionable, as though the booth itself has learned discretion.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Call me a long lost friend of the family.

Dorian’s shoulders ease by a fraction. The relief on his face is cautious, but real, and he reaches for the new name as if it is easier to carry than the old one.

Dorian Elsyin

Dorian Elsyin

A friend of the family... yes. That is safer than the rest.

When my father’s affairs are finished and the house is firmly in hand, I will see you again. Then we can decide what this becomes.

He sets his ringed hand beside the untouched cup, open and unhidden now, while the gold beyond the railing flashes through the room like a passing blade. The booth holds its silence, but the shape of the lie has changed.

Dorian waits, looking to Delfarius for the final word, his expression steady with newly chosen purpose.

“I look like a normal mortal man to mortal eyes and mortal senses. I smile at Dorian and give him a brief gesture of dismissal. "We will be in touch," I say loud enough for others to hear as Dorian pockets the star-cut diamond. "I am glad to have been able to catch up with you, if not your father at this moment. Send him my warmest regards." I smirk.”

Delfarius lifts his cup in a faint parting salute, all easy grace and public warmth. Around the booth, nearby nobles keep their eyes on their own plates, hearing only a polished farewell.

Delfarius

Delfarius

We will be in touch. I am glad to have caught up with you, if not your father at this moment. Send him my warmest regards.

Dorian dips his chin and takes the line without flinching, tucking the star-cut diamond away as if it were a private oath. His ringed hand closes once, then relaxes.

Dorian Elsyin

Of course. I will.

And when we speak again, I will not be speaking as a boy hiding behind my father’s shadow.

He rises from the booth with controlled composure, leaving the cup untouched and the lie intact for anyone watching. The room keeps its bright, gilded noise while he steps back into the aisle.

Dorian Elsyin

Until then, friend of the family.
