Ash whips across the ruined terrace as Delfarius descends from the shattered Obsidian Sanctuary. Behind him, the mountain’s hollowed mouth groans once, then goes still. Below, Merin kneels in gray dust, staring after the wreckage.

Merin

Merin

You took her name. You took the mountain’s memory. What is left for us now?

The red script on Delfarius’s skin pulses harder, hungry and impatient. The path to Clernatcy waits below, clear and merciless, leading straight toward the vault that holds Solan.

Delfarius

Delfarius

Clernatcy.

Merin

Merin

If you go down that road, the village will learn what you are in the same breath the cathedral does.

A cold wind lifts the ash from Merin’s shoulders and carries it over the broken terrace. Delfarius stands at the brink, the mountain behind him dead, the lowlands ahead offering his next prize.

Get past the road’s guard

I turn coldly back at my former apprentice, this failure of a man. "I bore of this existence, and of you, Merin. Live with your failure of being able to save Mira." I laugh once and walk forward toward the road ahead of me leaving Merin to his pitiful mortal grief.

Delfarius

I bore of this existence, and of you, Merin. Live with your failure of being able to save Mira.

Delfarius turns back with a cold laugh, and the ash on Merin’s shoulders quivers in the wind.

He steps off the shattered terrace and onto the road, cloak dragging a thin wake through gray dust.

The red script beneath his skin gives a pleased thrum, but it pulls tight enough to leave his hand tingling cold.

Merin stays kneeling in the ruin behind him, silent now, while Mira’s ash clings to his hair like a pale curse.

Ahead, the mountain path opens toward Clernatcy, but the quiet on the road feels too deliberate, too held.

Repine steps out of my shadow and sniffs the open hushed road around me.

Repine slips clear of Delfarius’s shadow and noses the road, then freezes. A pale thread of warding hums under the dust, quiet enough to miss until the hound’s hackles rise.

I roll my eyes and rise a bit in the air. "Oh no I sure hope there are not any guards on the road trying to stop me!" I say sarcastically/

Delfarius

Oh no, I sure hope there are not any guards on the road trying to stop me.

Delfarius rolls his eyes and drifts higher, but the road answers with a soft metal hush from the dust. Repine stiffens, and the warding thread tightens into a line that clearly means someone is already there.

I look down at the warding line. Little brittle thing. I snap my fingers and fray the line into useless script of magic.

Delfarius drops two fingers and snaps the ward-thread apart. The brittle line frays into dead script under the dust, then gutters flat along the road like a cut vein.

Repine jerks forward and then settles, pleased and watchful, while the hidden resistance loses its shape. The way ahead is not clear, it is simply no longer pretending to be empty.

A thin section of packed roadstone peels back beneath the dust, opening into a shallow notch with old binding marks. The guard on the road is now visible as a stationed ward, not a rumor.

Repine

Hunt found.

The frayed script twists once around Delfarius’s hand and leaves a hot sting across his fingers. A little blood beads there, dark against the ash.

Merin looks up from the ruins behind them, ash still clinging to him, and the silence on the road tightens. The path to Clernatcy is no longer unguarded, and it now waits for Delfarius to choose how to meet it.

I laugh loudly, enough for Merin to hear how well his attempt at keeping me here worked and hover forward down the road. I will get to Clernatcy. Edrin Vale must be taught a lession.

Hunt found.

Merin remains kneeling in the ash behind them, staring up as the last clean line of the sanctuary gives way to distance. The road does not stop Delfarius, it simply leads him past the hidden guard.

A weathered ward-stone sits recessed in the packed road, split by the frayed script Delfarius broke. The dust around it shivers once, then settles under his passing shadow.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The road was watched.

Delfarius continues forward without hesitation, blood still bright on his fingers. The mountainside falls behind him, and the way toward Clernatcy opens under a harsher, more honest silence.

Far ahead, the road bends into a pale cut through the stone, and no further pretense of emptiness holds. Whatever guards Clernatcy now waits in plain view, and the journey changes from search to approach.

New Gift: Road-Warden's Evasion

I stop a bit startled at the gall of the mortals baring my way. I see a group of plucky adventurers. A magus of some sort with a long staff, a hunter with a long elegant bow, and a warrior? named Seam in the front. Seam speaks for the group that bars me as I hover in the air.

Repine
Repine

Delfarius halts above the road, his stare stripping the distance bare. Three figures stand in the cut ahead, not patrolmen, but an adventuring knot with intent in their posture.

Delfarius

Delfarius

A staff, a bow, and a sword hand at the front.

The man in front, Seam, squares himself as the others hold behind him. The road’s silence tightens around them, and the old ward-stone behind Delfarius gives a faint, pleased thrum.

Seam

Seam

You stop there, stranger. State your business.

Delfarius’s blood marks the air as he studies their spacing, their resolve, and the long staff’s careful balance. The hunter’s bow stays half-lifted, ready but not yet drawn.

Repine lowers into a hunting crouch at Delfarius’s shoulder, watching Seam with bright approval. The path toward Clernatcy is no longer empty, and the waiting shape of resistance stands plain.

I raise an eyebrow at this bald man who's equipment is brand new while his companions, the magus and the hunter's garb appears used and well cared for. I hover in the air and fold my arms while Seam tells me how I am not going to pass unless I state what is my business. The hunter and magus groan behind Seam and tell him to let me pass, but Seam insists.

Delfarius folds his arms in the air, eyebrow lifting at Seam’s brand-new gear while the others look worn by the road. Repine keeps low and eager at his side as the bald man’s jaw tightens, and the trio behind him mutter for him to stand aside.

Seam

Seam

You heard me. State your business, or turn back.

The bowman exhales a weary groan, the magus shifts his staff, and Seam does not move. The ward-stone behind them gives one pleased thrum, and the road feels shut in all at once.

I tilt my head to the side amused at this little mortal. "I am midair, hovering and you look like you just got your equipment from adventurers-r-us. Amusing." The bowman asks Seam to shut up and the magus recognizes me and says we should leave, now. Seam tells me how mighty he is.

Delfarius tilts his head, still hovering, and the little roadline below him tightens under his stare. His words land with a dry, amused edge, and the bowman snaps at Seam to shut up while the magus goes rigid with recognition.

I am midair, hovering, and you look like you just got your equipment from adventurers-r-us. Amusing.

Seam

Seam

He gives a short, offended laugh, then throws his chin up. "You hear that? Mighty words from a man floating above the road."

Seam

Seam

"I am Seam, and I do not step aside for some smug shadow in the sky."

The Bowman

The Bowman

"Seam, enough. Shut up."

The Magus

The Magus

The magus stares harder, then blanches. "No. We leave. Now. I know that one."

Seam ignores the warning and keeps his ground, but the others shift. The road is no longer a simple line of defiance, it is a guarded threshold deciding whether to open or break.

I look to the magus and pull his name from the Archives, I also pull the bowman's and Seam's name from the Archives. I am the Ink.

Delfarius lets the names rise from the Archive, and the road answers at once. Seam’s stance falters first, then the bowman’s, then the magus’s, as if unseen fingers have plucked their identities clean.

Delfarius

Delfarius

The Archive takes them cleanly.

The magus inhales too sharply and goes pale, clutching his staff like it can anchor him. Seam blinks once, confused by the sudden hollowing in his own expression.

The Magus

The Magus

No. That is not possible.

The bowman turns his head toward the magus, then toward Delfarius, and his irritation slips into bare alarm. Repine lifts his muzzle, pleased, while the ward-stone gives a satisfied thrum under the road.

Seam

Seam

What did you do to us?

Delfarius stands with the names in hand now, and the path feels less like a line and more like a claim being measured. The road to Clernatcy does not open, it holds its breath.

"Well, Seam, I just pull your names from my Archives." I smirk and look at the bowman then the magus in turn. "Archer, nice to meet you." I laugh at the magus. "And Tyler. You should tell your shiny friend here who I am exactly before I unmake him."

Archer. He knows that too. I do not like that at all.

The Magus

No. I do not answer to that name.

The Bowman

The Bowman

He just stripped the road bare. Seam, lower the blade.

Seam

Seam

Tyler. Gods. He said it like he owns the word.

Seam’s block breaks at last, not from force, but from the way the others look at him. The road to Clernatcy opens a man’s width, with the ward-stone still thruming its pleased, listening pulse as the three of them hesitate and part.

I throw my head back at Tyler, the magus. "Oh I'm sorry, not the name you tell others but that is the one your mother and father gave you. Ty then." I raise an eyebrow and smirk. "Is that better?" Seam tells me how much danger I am for doing little pallor tricks because he is getting mad now.

Tyler goes still, the color draining from his face as if the road itself has named him. Seam turns sharply toward him, anger and alarm colliding in his expression.

Seam

Seam

You stop that. That kind of name work gets men killed.

Tyler

Tyler

He knows it. He actually knows it. No, no, not here.

The Bowman

The Bowman

Tyler, lower the staff. He is already inside your head.

The ward-stone gives a pleased thrum, then the half-open road ahead settles fully clear, as if Clernatcy itself has admitted Delfarius through its first gate.

"Oh Hunter" I say with a laugh to the Bowman. "I am inside all of you little mortal's minds, just ask Ty there who you really face now." Seam holds his sword up like he is meaning to attack me and tells me to stop or face his wrath.

Seam

Seam

Seam’s sword arm checks, not attacking, but no longer bluffing. “Ty, don’t answer him. Stay with me.”

Tyler

Tyler

Tyler swallows hard, staring at Delfarius like the road has turned into a grave. “He is in me. He said my name.”

The Bowman

The Bowman

The Bowman glances once at Tyler, then back to Delfarius, as if weighing whether courage is still cheaper than retreat. “That name work is rot. It gets men killed because it makes them easy to follow.”

The ward-stone throbs with a pleased, listening pulse. The opened road remains clear for a man-width, but the silence behind it feels claimed, not safe.

Seam

Seam

Seam lifts the sword higher without stepping in. “One more word, and I swear I cut a path through you.”

I look to the Bowman, Hunter and sigh. "Get your pet adventurer to back down before Seam get's murdered." Seam tells me how mighty and great he is. Hunter tries to get Seam to shut up and Tyler is already preparing a protection spell for them.

Hunter’s jaw tightens. “Seam, shut up. He is not bluffing.”

Seam

Seam

Seam keeps his sword up, but his voice turns sharp with pride. “I do not back down for anyone.”

Tyler

Tyler

Tyler’s lips move around the start of a ward, pale light gathering at his staff tip.

The ward-stone throbs with a pleased, listening pulse, and the open road starts to feel less like passage and more like a held breath.

Hunter

Hunter

Hunter does not look away from Delfarius. “Seam, listen. If you want to keep breathing, lower it.”

Seam’s sword hand falters by a finger’s width. Tyler’s half-made protection shimmers between them, and the silence on the road turns wary instead of open.

Seam lunges at me with his sword. I hold my hand out and hold him back by holding his head. Seam swings at empty air.

Delfarius does not answer the ward. He closes the distance in a blur, one hand snapping up to catch Seam by the face as the sword whistles through empty air.

Seam’s strike cuts nothing but wind, his body jolting forward into Delfarius’s grip. The road’s open stretch vanishes behind that single held head, and Tyler’s pale ward-light trembles.

Delfarius

Delfarius

His blade missed.

Hunter

Hunter

Seam, down! Now!

Seam

Seam

Let go of me!

Repine lifts his head at Delfarius’s feet, pleased and alert, as the ward-stone gives a deeper, satisfied thrum.

Tyler’s half-formed protection flares brighter, and the road ahead shows its false calm at last, a blocked passage waiting behind their fear.

I materialize a cloth and buff Seam's bald head until it shines more and laugh at him and his bewildered expression.

Delfarius drapes a pale cloth across Seam’s scalp and begins to buff it in slow, exact circles. The road gives a low ward-thrum underfoot, and Hunter’s alarm sharpens into disbelief.

Seam jerks in place, caught between outrage and confusion, as the shine creeps over his head. Tyler’s ward-light wavers, then steadies brighter at the staff tip.

Repine lifts his muzzle from Delfarius’s boots, pleased and intent, while the cloth works faster. A smear of ash on the road catches the light beside Veyra’s fallen tag, and the ward-stone keeps its satisfied pulse.

Seam

Seam

What are you doing to me?

Hunter

Hunter

Seam, stop moving. Let him finish if you want to keep the line.

Tyler

Tyler

That ward just tightened. He is not breaking the road, he is reading it.

Delfarius’s final pass leaves Seam’s bald head gleaming under the mountain light. Seam goes still, bewildered, as the guard line loses its hard edge and the path ahead feels more openly watched than blocked.

Delfarius

There, at least now you look bright, even if you are an idiot.

Seam

He blinks, then barks a short, stunned laugh. "That is the worst blessing I have ever heard."

Hunter’s grip tightens on the bow, but his voice eases. "He is still standing. That is the part I am watching."

Tyler

Tyler studies the ward-light at his staff tip, then the road beyond Seam. It is not holding them back anymore, it is measuring them.

Seam

Seam

Seam tips his chin at Delfarius, uneasy now beneath the shine. "If you are done polishing me, say what this road is doing."

The blocked line loosens by a breath, not because Seam yields, but because the road itself has gone from barrier to witness. Ahead, the route to Clernatcy lies open for a man-width stretch, yet the ward-stone keeps its satisfied pulse, as if warning that the welcome is only skin-deep.
